The 96 anime really should've just ended with the text after that cut away reading "go read the fucking manga."

Things like the Eclipse ending, Skullknight, and Silat weren't important to the director. It was more important that we got to know more about the 1000 year history of the Korbawitz.

For all their faults the trilogy movies are much better.

All their faults are the reason why they aren't better. The movies and the anime both end pretty terribly but at least the anime captures the essence of the manga well.

How exactly does the last Berserk movie end terribly as compared to a fade to black in the OG series.

Its laughably bad and was only acceptable because its all we had. For all their faults the trilogy movies are much better. Less time talking talking about the history of the Korbawitz family and more time dedicated to showing the actual conclusion of the Golden Age.

Which has hardly any impact, because you don't give a shit about these characters, because the movies don't seem to with how they rushed through all of the setup.

The impact of the movies depends entirely on how shocking the eclipse is in and of itself. That is doing it wrong.

I found just as unsatisfying. It doesn't explain the Eclipse any better. It doesn't explain Skull Knight's allegiance. To suggest the movies are better than the anime just because the ending is slightly better is ridiculous to me.

I will take having less of an impact over not even showing the the conclusion of the eclipse or what happened to its survivors.

The OG anime doesn't even have an ending.

Less of an impact isn't the same as virtually none. It's like reading a tragedy and not caring how the fall happens, that's literally the entire thing lol. Your imagination can fill in the gaps of what happens after, but not the stuff actually leading up to it, it's what makes the story believable and actually gives it some meaningful momentum.

Everyone should be reading the manga, the 97 anime is just a glorified commercial for the manga. It presents one of the most self-contained portions of the story in a relatively faithful and effective way, your criticism is just that the golden age can't be entirely self-contained, and you're right it can't because it's a part of the larger story, and those two aims are contradictory. But it at least manages to hit the right tone and gives its characters time to breathe, which can't be said for the movies.

Pace is slowing down a bit in this last ep, lotta lingering shots. Guess since this arc is all their doing they're gonna drag the final out over the remaining 2 or 3 eps.

The movie made sure it answered the most important question though. "Does Slann shave or not?"

She waxes, duh. Brazilian or whatever the Berserk universe equivalent is. Also what does Void use to keep his brain all nice and soft.

Is the anime continuing after this arc?

Probably not. I doubt the sales have been good.
But I would almost prefer they go back and animate the 3 arcs or so they skipped to get here.

Another thought. I can't even remember how the OG anime even ends.
I know the Skull Knight doesn't turn up to save Guts and Caska.
So its either the ultimate cliffhanger or the ultimate lol bad end.

I also find the ending of the original anime to be pretty bad. I've gotten 3 people so far to start watching Berserk and they all complained about it, saying it's just confusing and anticlimactic, as in the way they cut from
Gut's eye/face to credits
. One honestly asked me whether there was some extra episode somewhere because it cannot end abruptly like that.

I discovered Berserk as an anime before I realized it was mostly known as a manga.

I remember that I really loved the 2/3 of the anime, and hated the ending so bad it made reconsider my affection as the whole for the anime. I didn't think how could anyone produce such a story only to end this stupidly, but that was before I proceed to read the manga.

So yeah, you could say the anime ending is so bad it got me to check out the manga, so it worked in a sense.

I saw the anime first too and I too thought it was missing an episode. Especially considering it ends at episode 25 when normally animes end at 26.

Well iirc it literally ends at Guts being pinned down while watching Caska being raped and his Eye bleeding. There is a small scene after that where he gears up and takes the dragonslayer.

I don't think I hated the ending, but it left me sure thirsty for what happened next.

Just finished the original anime. What a crappy ending. Where to next? I need more.

You can watch this series but it cuts out a ton of content between the end of the original anime and where it starts and isn't very good. You can also jump into the manga but I'd say start at the beginning and go from there since none of the adaptations cover everything and its just that damn good.

Can I get the manga free online or do I have to have some subscription?

There is no legal online version in English for whatever stupid reason and unless you want to subscribe to Young Animal in Japan, your best bet would be getting the physical volumes. You can try purchasing them though they can be hard to find as some are out of print but I've told others, try your local library network as many of them now have large collections of manga. Even if your local branch doesn't, you can borrow some from another associated library.

Just started. It's great!

Haha, at first I was like "what the fuck is this?" Then I figured out that you read it right to left!

Yeah that takes some getting used to if you don't read manga much. Also if you are going about less legal means just be careful as some of the translations are absolutely atrocious. If you see the name Gats, Gattsu or anything like Griffon or Zoddu then back out immediately at find something better.

Edit: Not to encourage illegal activities but some of those fan translations are terrible and totally muddle up the story, characters and so on.

Anyone else who thinks this episode looked waaaay better than the rest, even the 3D parts? If only the entire series were on the level of this ep. Still nowhere near excellent, but dare I say it looked...good?

That close up of Mozgus shouting "This will not be" fucking dead. Is Guts running up or down the side of that castle? This is like DMC 3. They didn't even bother to fucking animate fucking Mozgus transforming. You've got to be motherfucking kidding me. Lol Puck knows the Solar Flare! We DBZ now?
Fucking Mozgus is like:

Now he's dead. I mean this has gotten better but yeesh I just want them to start from scratch or something the show really needs a sense of pacing.

I actually agree. I thought the quality of this show was best shown during day time but I feel they upped their game a bit in this episode. The usual complaints are there but this episode was pretty watchable at least :p

By the by, regarding the scene where Guts jumps from the top and impales through Mozgus, I just read the manga not more than two weeks ago for the first time and I was confused/disorientated for a while there too. Dunno why I am mentioning this, not like I want to defend the anime for their piss poor job but it was a confusing shot in the manga too.

Yeah, in general the anime has gotten better and better as it's progressed. Although they could have done some crazy things with a bigger budget, the fight was interesting even though they basically just stood in place and traded blows, lol.

Honestly it be easier do another movie trilogy

One film starting with Wandering Guts and end with Berserker armour fight.

2nd film Nu Band Of Hawk focused with Guts on the beach

3rd Ganishuka boss battle and end with the boat.

I don't think the movies where that bad sure glossed over some stuff but it not total disaster.

I watched the movies recently and enjoyed them. That said, I actually thought they'd be better if you were already familiar with the series and so knew about missing parts.

I'd forgotten what a cheesy bastard Mozgus was.
Shouting out all his attack name like that.

Corny fuck deserved to lose that fight.

I have zero problem with how they did the OG anime for Berserk. I would say it's far better than what it would have been under a different director.

He focused on the strongest arc the series has had. Rather than bloating it up with Skullknight, Puck, the dog guy, where they really serve no purpose in the Manga till after the arc is done. He fleshed out the other characters more. Removing a lot of the fantasy elements too also made the twist bigger.

Nor would I say it didn't have a fitting ending. At first, I was like wTF. But now, it makes sense with how that was the best way to end it.

I think the first anime is great but there are some baffling choices made. If you were just gonna focus on Golden Age, why include the first episode at all? That extra run time could have been used to add Skull Knight to have things make a little more sense, and adapt the actual ending to the Golden Age arc instead of ending it a tad short.

Decided to watch all 11 episodes in a row. Series was not as bad, even in the first episodes. I liked that with CG they tried to create their own action scenes instead of following the manga, like the newer Jojo adaptations. Even though some scenes were a mess and you could not see what was happening or which angle it was. Unfortunately the Apostles and monsters transition to full 3D was not as smooth. They are hardly as menacing as in the manga or the older TV series. You feel like you want to laugh, they look like elementary school drawings. The ones that retained traditional 2D drawings mixed with CGI, like the 4 henchmen, were better. Same for Skull Knight, though he was full CGI. The Egg too
(and hopefully Zodd, even for a few secs)
.
Some scenes were nightmarish and trippy, reminding me of the 70s flick Belladona of Sadness.

I liked that for once there is an animated version of Berserk with Puck. Gave the series some humour, something necessary in order for the tragic scenes to work better. Was tired of the animated adaptations of the Band of the Hawks arc.

Too bad that one has to read the manga or watch the old series to have a clue what is happening, as this is not a reboot. I remember that after that Arc the manga became problematic. So this is the best arc they chose to animate. I wished for more episodes so they could include the omitted Apostle encounters prior to the series start.

I can't even put this and Diamond is Unbreakable in the same sentence. DiU gets me hype as fuck. This...does not, even though it's better than when it first started, I just can not watch this after Jojo, it MUST be watched before Jojo.

One of these days the Berserk manga will finish and we will get a Hellsing Ultimate style OVA page perfect adaptation of the manga in 50 minute long episodes, each covering roughly a volume (so like 40 something 50 minute episodes).

It will be the greatest thing to be put into the animation medium just like Berserk is the greatest thing to be put into a manga panel.
