Sony doesn't allow Fallout 4/Skyrim mods on PS4

Bethesda seems equally at fault, so their shitty pr putting all the blame on Sony is another example of that company being bad times.

I suspect a lot of the issues are that the PS4 is Sony architecture and not just an obfuscated Windows box like the Xbox One is where everything is very similar to PC mods.

Yep, couldn't give a shit about Bethesda after the PS3 Skyrim debacle. There is probably more to this than we are seeing here.

They're not gonna .. same way they completely sidelined mentioning the PS4 Slim debacle in their conference.

The fact that you think there was a "PS4 slim debacle" is pretty telling as to your perspective on things, and how it simply doesn't jive with reality in any way.

Nothing much to say really.

No to EA Access, no to cross platform play, no to optical out, no to UHDBR, No to Backwards compatibility, no to PSN name changes. Sony and PlayStation's policies suck ass this generation and it's doing nothing but hurt the consumer.

Lame. So glad this iterative console nonsense finally me made go with PC as my main and PS4 as a guess I'll keep it around for exclusive since I already have it machine.

haha yeh i'm in the same boat. Not touching console gaming again after this ps4 runs it's time. New PC incoming. I'm not on board with iterative designs that mimic the worst part of PC gaming without many of the benefits.

Can't see them allowing cross platform multiplayer for similar reasons. They've really dropped the ball regarding this.

While I want the details on this and think it's a dumb move. GAF needs to get out of its bubble.

Anyone who truly cares about mods has these games on PC. Mods for F4 were a timed exclusive for XB1 and F4 sold more on PS4.

A lot of the things GAF seems as big controversies the general public doesn't even know or give a shit about.

People still see the ps4 as a great value and way to play amazing games. Same as XB1
I do think a lot of people are overreacting to the damage this will cause Sony but the line about people caring about mods wold have just bought the pc version... I play on ps4 and bought the game with the intention of playing with mods since that's what was advertised.

Welp if I decide to get another hardcore console in the next couple years it will most definitely be Scorpio now. gg Sony.

What reasons would make Sony say no to mods?

Apparently Sony uses priority file and package formats for games in PS4 and they arnt crazy about giving people outside of license holders access to tools that would work with them.

A little about licensing, and probably a little worried about reverse engineering piracy

To be fair though that's on Bethesda for advertising before they had it locked down

This is a bad.

Unless there is some kind of definitive and clear security risk or some other fundamental issue with mods, this just seems like a really bad decision.

Sony is really on some next level bullshit right now. I was really really looking forward to these mods so I can finally play Fallout 4 and have some fun with it but this is just fucking unacceptable.

Lots of pissed off responses for a game most of Gaf hates and sold after 10 hours playing it or whatever. Kinda weird.

Anyways, I guess that Skyrim PSN page needs to be updated. They shouldn't have advertised something they didn't know they couldn't deliver. Shit's on both of them.

No I'm not. It sucks this isn't happening but some posters need to step out of their emotional and opinionated bubble with no basis.

It's the same when people shit on MS and their policy regarding FF14. It sucks but outside of GAF or forum chatter no one truly cares.
;)

Mods on PS4 and Xbox would be a complete mess anyway.
I expect lots of corrupted save games, framerate issues and gamebreaking bugs to go along with modded BETHESDA games on a fucking CONSOLE.
Those who modded Skyrim, Fallout etc. on PC know that you can easily fuck up your game if you're not careful and don't apply mods correctly. It's going to be even more of a disaster on consoles. I don't know what Bethesda is expecting.

There are few companies as incompetent as Bethesda, with a laundry list of lies to go along with it. You'd be a fool to trust anything Bethesda says at face value. Still, Sony needs to respond to this. This isn't something to keep quiet about, especially when Bethesda is throwing it out there.

Mods are already out for xbox. Have been for some time.

You do realize it's been out on Xbox One for a while now? It works great.

Boy, oh boy Sony. Just can't catch a break. This mod situation isn't really that big of a deal, but it's bigger when you look at Sony's narrative in the last couple weeks.

I mean, I stopped playing about 6 or 7 hours in so I could wait for the promised mods to improve the (frankly quite poor) experience I was having. I wish I could ask for a refund because I'll probably never touch it now they've done this, when I was totally planning to. But I don't feel morally right doing it. Don't promise until you can deliver, Bethesda.

What?

They been running fine on Xbox for months.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Before you ask, no I'm not a Polygon employee, but I still think the messaging, or lack there of, on Sony's part was incredibly bizarre and frankly somewhat embarrassing .. and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

What the hell?!!! I thought this was a given already? As in, wasn't it actually announced?

I am generally fine with Sony's recent plans (excited even, on many fronts), but this is straight up bullshit and detrimental to their gaming brand. As in, two games just got a whole lot of better on the other platforms due to this huge ommision.

They shouldn't have announced and advertised a feature before they were certain they could do it.

Ah, so it was announced. Then I agree they shouldn't have done that in the first place. But Sony still is the one to ultimately blame here for not allowing this.

Mods on console always sounded murky to me. But Sony should've been willing to give it a shot. No better place to start than bethesda

no amount of enhancements on the Pro version will save this game purchase for me (I'm still getting a pro), guess I'll be picking up all bethesda titles on the xbox.

Fuck you Sony

Title should be changed from "clickbait article style" to "accurate information style".
The title is accurate information.
I can't help but feel like Bethesda has some blame in all of this too. It'll be interesting to find out the details on Sony's end.
Bethesda has no blame for this. They announced mods coming to consoles only because Sony originally said it would be possible.
FUCK YOU SONY WHERE'S MY NUDE MODS

This is no big deal.
Yes you fucking nailed it junior, that's the only mods we care about. Nevermind nude mods aren't even allowed on consoles iirc.

Like all Bethesda games.
Before even thinking about mods they should first fix their games. Fuck em.
There's only 1 Bethesda game on PS4 and it doesn't have any serious technical issues outside of a below average framerate in the city and XB1 has that exact same problem.

Mods are already on Xbox One.

Plus, Unreal Tournament on PS3 allowed mods. Wonder what made Sony change stances.

Its part of the experience bro. Modding is fun.

Got to take the rough with the smooth. Everyone knows that if you are going to mod you should backup your saves.

Yeah the reactions in here are pretty hyperbolic without knowing any of the specifics on how this feature came to not occur. I could see if you bought fallout 4 / pre-ordered skyrim for this explicit feature that you'd be reasonably pissed however.

All in all the feature always seemed like it was in the best interest solely for Bethesda. Microsoft followed along with it to add another differentiator for xbox. It always seemed like a huge undertaking for the platform holder to support it for 2 whole games, that's my guess for why Sony didn't follow suit.

Oh give me a break.
