The only way Punk would have had a chance is if UFC literally picked up a bum off the street.

Outside of pure luck Punk never had a chance against anyone with any kind of meaningful MMA experience.

2 years of training with the best still wont give you a the instinct & muscle memory of someone who has been trying to make this their life for a decade.

You really nailed it here. I guess I was just surprised how much wrestle-gaf was mocking him, I expect it from MMA-gaf. But I figured wrestle-gaf would be more supportive.

But yeah, what you said makes a lot of sense..

Most wrestling fans, save for zealous Punk fanboys pretty much saw it as a farce.

So I watched this at a friends place, and he said his speaker wires weren't great, so we thought maybe that was causing the issues, but I just watched a clip of one of the fights on social media and it also had sound issues... So just quickly -did anyone else find that the crowd was really high in the mix and Joe and Goldberg were really low? I could barely make them out all night.

They should have booked Punk against some old legend like Shamrock, why they put him against a young lion is ridiculous

Shamrock wouldnt make it past the USADA testing. Punk just doesnt seem like an athletic dude. Even if he won, who is he going to fight after that. 170 is one of the most competitive divisions.

Judging from how the internet is reacting. The UFC needs more circus fights like this. Just have a bunch of crazy celebrities go train for 2 years and have them try their hand in the UFC. They will sell like crazy.

Yeah, they really need a carnival division.

Yep. He was outclassed by thousands of hours.

You can't bridge that gap in two years.

were there any repercussions for fabricio's post fight actions?

Commission let it slide. The fight shouldve been stopped in the first when Browne called a timeout, its probably best for them to just give Werdum a pass and forget the whole thing happened.

I think this kind of stunt-matching can only be done so many times. Brock definitely worked out, but he was a NCAA wrestling Div 1 champ. People like watching stuff like Kimbo/Dada 5000 and Gracie/Shamrock-2016, but even the UFC wouldn't put those events on. I think after Brock pissing hot and the assassination of Punk, the door's been slammed on the WWE forever, and I just don't see a place in the UFC for future "celebrity" fighters.

Punk will have to do what Mickey Rourke did last year to get a Win. Go to Russia, literally pluck a homeless man off the street, and pay him $5K to take a dive.

You people have no respect for Gall.
Sage lost to Bryan Barbarena and was in danger twice of being submitted by Enrique Marin.
He'd have the advantage standing but Gall looks hungrier than him and if he gets him on the ground, Sage ain't doing shit but surviving.

Pretty confident Sage is going to destroy Gall.

I dunno about that, Gall's grappling is really high level. The shit he was pulling off in his open workout is stuff that you generally only see high level pure BJJ competitors pull off. That slick Imanari Roll he hit was legit.

Here is a mind blowing statistic for you.
Mickey Gall's combined 3 Pro fights opponents have a combined record of 0-3. That's right no one Mickey Gall has ever fought have ever won a Pro fight and in fact they were all noobies making their Pro debut.

Sage Northcutt's last 4 opponents have a combined record of 45 wins and 17 losses.

They aren't even in the same league. And Barbarena would absolutely man handle Mickey Gall lol

The UFC's marketing for Gall has done so well for them its hilarious

Now Barbarena is a beast, aha.

Barberena just beat Warley Alves..........you actually think Mickey Gall would beat Warley Alves?
No one knows how Gall would do against any of these guys.
Experience is crucial but it doesn't give you the automatic W.
It did against Punk because he was new to the game.
Could Sage knock the fuck out of Gall???
Sure.
But Sage is all hype so far, doesn't really have any impressive wins.
I don't think Gall is the next star or anything but he's competent and competent fighters give Sage all he can handle.

Every one of Sage's wins in the UFC are more impressive than if he beats Gall would be.

No exaggeration

Tell me who Sage beat that is vastly better than Gall.

I mean who knows possibly all of his UFC wins? We have not seen Mickey Gall fight an actual fighter, ever. The dudes that Northcutt beat could have walked into the Mike Jackson and CM Punk fights and done the exact same thing to them.

Gall may end up being good, but trying to base a judgement off of him based on what we've seen is a non factor. He has never fought not only a UFC caliber opponent (which Sage has) he has never even faced a high level Bellator fighter.

Wait.. So you criticize someone for using numbers but then ask them to justify their stance with MMA math?

Sage is a legitimate talent. He's got some holes in his game but nothing that we've seen of Gall suggests he could capitalize on. Nothing suggests that Gall is on Sage or even the general UFC rosters level.

Well, we'll see as Dana said the fight is going to happen.
Not the greatest matchup but pretty interesting for two newcomers.

IF Gall can beat Sage then I will begin to give him props. I respect the kid and honestly he's performing how he should be against the level of competition he is facing given his similar level. I take nothing away from him for that.

Its just in terms of competition, level of experience, general skills, etc we have never seen him face an actual fighter. We have seen Sage fight many actual fighters. Thus I can't give Gall an edge based off of what we know.

Now Gall may go out there and submit Sage, and at that point I'll start giving him more due but until we see him fight someone that isn't a Photographer making his pro debut or a WWE wrestler making his pro debut I can't give him the advantage over a fighter like Sage who has been in there with actual, Pro fighters

we have almost no read at all on how good gall really is

you should be going by the numbers in terms of evaluating him because anything else is pretty much going off your gut or intuition, which is about as useful as reading tea leaves

it's fair to say that gall has never once fought anyone on northcutt's level or the level of any of northcutt's previous opponents in competition

you should also consider why northcutt's camp immediately responded saying they would take that fight

nothing is guaranteed in MMA but nothing crazy is being claimed here either

So are Rock and Brock. Didn't stop Punk from complaining about them taking his spot when he was in the WWE.

As for the reaction Punk is getting, the guy has a fairly polarizing personality, so I'm sure plenty of people disliked him from the jump, but Mickey Gall touched on it in his post fight presser, privelage can rub people the wrong way, and this entire endeavor for Punk screamed privelage. It would be like if the MLB orchestrated it so that Tim Tebow went straight to the majors and his first game was in the playoffs. People would laugh their asses off at him as he pathetically struck out every at bat because they know he didn't deserve to be there

the same people laughing at him now thought he was Jesus Christ reincarnated in 2011. It's not just privilege, half these people don't even care about MMA. They're mad he called out the WWE for their BS, left and didn't bite his tongue. And they feel he turned his back on wrestling by insulting the annoying fans. BTW, he wasn't mad at brock/rock... he was mad at the company for telling him to do A, B, and C in order to get what he wanted and when he did those things they still didn't keep their word. His personality isn't an excuse because he's always been like this, even when they loved him. I remember people on here were mad at me for not being all over Punk's shoot stuff back then, how things change!

I hear you.
Basically, impressive or not, we know what Sage can do but Gall is an unknown entity.
I'm glad the fight is being made though despite how corny it is for someone, that hasn't done anything in the UFC, calling out another fighter.
In this day and age of the kooky UFC, I don't think the matchup is too unreasonable.

Yeah I agree, I'm actually really excited for the fight as it will indeed give us an idea where Gall is in terms of skills. I suspect he will actually do ok but just feel Sage is going to beat him at the end of the day either by decision or KO.

But its a fight that makes a decent amount of sense in that we can actually see Gall fight a real fighter and see where he is.

I'm not denying there is a lot of that, but I don't think you can paint everyone rooting against Punk with a broad brush, in terms of the reactions he was getting. The Punk story was like the opposite of an underdog story. He used his fame and money to train at one of the best gyms and get a chance on the biggest stage without ever proving he belonged there. There are guys that are desperate for a chance at the UFC, guys like Mickey Gall, who would kill for those kinds of opportunities. A lot of people that never follow the WWE or really had any idea who Punk was before this were going to be rubbed the wrong way by that. He had the deck stacked against him from the start in terms of public perception.
