Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

Seems like a far fetched story. Being a rich person must come with all kinds of undergrounds trying to frame and ruin a man. Rich people that pass around money remind of possessed body snatcher cults.

"Here, would you like a drink of water?"
"No thanks"
"I insist"
"I'm going to go now'"
"That won't be necessary, you're one of us now"
Crowd of business suits with missing eye sockets" One of us, one of us"

Hard not being a racist piece of shit when the majority of people you now hang out with are racist pieces of shit.

There was something I never quite liked about the guy. Seemed sleezy or something. Arrogant maybe? I dunno. After his while "Oculus will be affordable" shtick and than announcing that $700 price point I knew that was enough not to trust him.

What an idiot. Facebook should fire him,

I'm not surprised. It's like Notch or Elon Musk. A lot of these tech guys get lost in their worlds of numbers and data, so much so that social issues don't even click with them. Because of the binary "works/doesn't work" nature of tech development things outside of it that have gray areas and more nuance seem so foreign that they simply become reactionary and treat the unfamiliar with hostility.

I didn't know that Elon Musk supported white supremacy groups.

Interesting. So either it's Lucky or Daily Beast is about to get Gawker'd. Either way this looks like it needs more time in the oven before I touch it.

The article in the current revision doesn't make any sense to me:

"The 24-year-old told The Daily Beast that he had used the pseudonym “NimbleRichMan” on Reddit with a password given him to by the organization’s founders."

"Luckey's LinkedIn profile currently lists him as the founder of Oculus VR. He did not respond to requests for comment by press time."

If he told them and that is the basis for the article are we meant to believe that this was a casual chat and then the idea for the article came up a few hours later when Luckey wasn't reachable any more?
I think the former is implied to come from pre article research, while the latter is when they asked about it in the context of the article they were about to publish.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Okay, if you were quoting from the article then I think they are editing it as we type because I'm not even seeing the name D.B. Purple in it now.

But from what I do see, he wasn't the founder. On the contrary, the founders gave him the password to that account:

What does this even mean

Holy shit that's hilarious. The idea that Luckey claimed he was a confidant of Trump in 2011/2012 at the age of 20 is incredible.
He's posting on Reddit, wouldn't be surprised if more than one thing in a reddit account is a lie or stretching of the truth (like, he tweeted at Trump that he should run).

Either I'm really tired and reading this wrong, or, you totally just answered your question in your question!
I'm sorry but as a journalist, if you have a chat with the founder of a multi-billion pound company you atleast keep a formal record of said conversation.

This just seems outrageous.

He might mean he just posted to some pro Trump message boards or something. Would you find it odd if he was exaggerating?

Good on you for keeping an open mind. We all could stand to do a bit more of that.

Hey I am far from perfect, and more than willing to admit that. I'm just a dude with all kinds of things going on in life like everyone else. I try to keep my mind open and willing to accept challenges to my way of thinking, because frankly I don't know everything and am wrong as much as I'm right :)

Besada and a few other posters in here are making some really valid counter arguments to my stance so that deserves my respect and to really mull and think over.

Now the article doesn't read like they talked to Luckey and confirmed he is NimbleRichGuy.

Now it reads more that they thought Luckey is NimleRichGuy, wrote the article that he is NimbleRichGuy while simultaneously writing "He [Luckey] did not respond to requests for comment by press time."

It's a mess.

What are you talking about?

The 24-year-old told The Daily Beast that he had used the pseudonym “NimbleRichMan” on Reddit with a password given him to by the organization’s founders.

Racism seems like a brainwashing movement to me. We can all clearly see that all races of man have the same physical makeup. I think it derives from one's youth. Same with war. You grow up around violence, you think a gun is as normal as a spoon and fork.

He confirmed his identity to them while they were simultaneously not being able to reach Luckey for comment.

We'll see how it turns out. I don't think think this is the Washington Post so I'm not taking this as some airtight story, especially as it's being live-edited.

What does this even mean

Are you having trouble with the English language?

Go to the article.

Hit 'Ctrl + F'

Type in "D.B. Purple" or even just "Purple"

You will see it returns zero results.

That means they took the part you quoted out of the article as it exists now. They re-edited it because that information probably wasn't correct. Look up my quote and you'll see it's still there.

I wouldn't care if it were anyone other than Trump. Even if he were backing (ugh), Ted Cruz, I'd probably give him a pass. But backing Trump is like backing Bin Laden to me.

If Trump wins I'll be jumping on the VR bandwagon so I don't have to watch democracy crumble around me and be re-assembled as a wall on our southern border. Needless to say, that VR headset will not be an Oculus.

It's all a matter of what's learned from your environment, namely from family, friends, and institutions like school, church, and even the media. No one is born racist.

I guess i dont understand what is happening. So he is funding a Trump support group? Where is the stuff about white supremacist? Must be missing it.

There's nothing that suggest they don't?
Other than there being no evidence to support said claim?

I'd expect some chat log, audio recording or Skype recording or something to confirm this.

Like Benny is saying, they said they had a chat with the guy and then couldn't reach him.

Knowledge is power, guard it well
I get the hate for Palmer Luckey, but the hate for Oculus seems strange? Like people are forgetting the other thousand + other people involved in its creation, or the fact white supremacy or similar bigots probably work on other products they love and use. Maybe there's something I'm not thinking about, but so long as Palmer Luckey doesn't have the majority of control over oculus, what's the big deal? I get that this could be seen as indirectly contributing to funding white supremacy groups, but couldn't you say that about any large scale product?

Well, if every white supremacist in power would be so kind as to raise their hand and wave at me, I'd be able to cull my support way more efficiently!

The whole, "you are probably supporting a bad person's product and just don't know it", just doesn't make sense. Duh, if I knew I'd adjust accordingly.

I meant the "the organization vetted by Milo gave Palmer the NimbleRichGuy account to post with". How does that make the stuff NimbleRichGuy says not Palmer's words?

>The candidate I don't like is going to win so democracy is crumbling

That's pretty much what you're getting at right?

What articles do you read that have an accompanying chat log/audio recording/etc.?

The not being able to reach Luckey for comment is presumably in reference to their organization's tenuous position vis-à-vis federal tax law, which is what the final section of the article is about. There isn't any ambiguity about Luckey's involvement though.
