Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

My understanding is that he held some extremely misogynistic views but I'm having trouble finding that now. Maybe I'm misremembering.

That would be really disappointing. I always thought he was one of the good ones.

He confirmed his identity to them while they were simultaneously not being able to reach Luckey for comment.

We'll see how it turns out. I don't think think this is the Washington Post so I'm not taking this as some airtight story, especially as it's being live-edited.

Did you make that up?

Other than there being no evidence to support said claim?

I'd expect some chat log, audio recording or Skype recording or something to confirm this.

Like Benny is saying, they said they had a chat with the guy and then couldn't reach him.

I understand and agree with wanting to wait to hear his side of the story, but, DB making up something like this would absolutely end the site from both an integrity and monetary POV. I'd be shocked if that were the case.

Go to the article.

Type in "D.B. Purple" or even just "Purple"

You will see it returns zero results.

That means they took the part you quoted out of the article as it exists now. They re-edited it because that information probably wasn't correct. Look up my quote and you'll see it's still there.

the D.B. Purple is an excerpt from the nimble america site's About page. i don't think it was ever in the article

The line about reaching for comment used to be in reference to Facebook itself. They edited it because it was incorrect in saying he didn't work for Facebook, but in doing so changed the subject being asked for comment.

That's the only change to the article, though. It's hardly enough to cast doubt on the rest of it. Oculus/Palmer fans are just reaching for justification to disbelieve.

Whether he's NimbleRichMan or not, he might as well be and deserves what's coming to him, given that A) he is rich and "self made" and B) spouts the same rhetoric constantly on twitter, as well as dates someone with similar views. Even if by some remote chance this isn't him, then the accusation has highlighted the fact that he's that sort of person anyway.

Why should the account be suddenly deleted, if it's not him? Wouldn't they just post "lol I'm not Palmer, idiot press." You want us to believe that NimbleRichMan just deleted his account for completely unrelated reasons?

Tomorrow's going to be a bloodbath.

Yup. SAD! I used to think Palmer was an alright dude, seemed like a passionate gear head and gamer, came across as sincere in the early days when they first started doing trade show appearances. Then the larger picture started to form with his gf's social media accounts, can't say I'm surprised he's this far down the Donald Hole. Actively funding this group...that I didn't expect. What else is an alt-right almost billionaire supposed to do with his money? Will be interesting to see FB's response to this.

Oculus is gonna flop, Scorpio won't be compatible with Vive because of Valve, PSVR wins undisputed.

Microsoft already has a "partnership" with Valve to support VR with Windows 10.

Also, Fallout 4 VR has only been announced for the Vive and Todd Howard talked about getting Fallout 4 VR running on the Scorpio.

What articles do you read that have an accompanying chat log/audio recording/etc.?
Atleast a quote. This is as bad as Trump saying Obama wasn't born in the US. Like he made a direct statement, but it was false.

You don't just make a claim like this with no evidence.

Lol so you guys are seriously shitting on the Rift because he supports Trump and not Clinton? Maybe some people just don't like her.

And maybe some people don't want a US president who wants to break the Geneva convention and force the military to murder innocents.

Or who wants the US to discriminate based on religion.

Nobody in here cares that he isn't supporting Clinton. They care because he's supporting Trump and working with Milo. But I think you probably know that.

It's not impossible that the Daily Beast decided today that they would commit libel against a near billionaire, but I also find it hard to believe that they would attribute direct quotes to the man if this story is a complete fabrication.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. The story quotes Luckey directly.

The memes are too dank. No one can stop them. If Trump should win the election, he will be our first meme-president.

I can already see new marketing strategies surrounding 'memes' pop up soon.
Marketing has been memeing long before the internet was a gleam in Al Gore's eye.

Exactly. Fuck this guy and his gf.

I am not even a fan of valve but I hope valve smash this opportunity to take advantage of the ficaso.

Remember your knee-jerk reactions in this thread later and learn from them.

Also, we need to point out the direct racist traits on display here (I've missed them myself), not just the "he supports Trump so he is racist" indirect accusation. In the words of a gaffer a few posts ago, 'It's a little more nuanced than that.'

Trump campaign.

White supremacists.

Tell me the difference.

So because illegal immigration is a big problem that needs attention, that is a negative for Trump somehow? Because he isnt a democrat and doesnt want to hand out all of the money to welfare ridden inner cities, that is a negative for trump?

Look, he isnt a saint and i dont even like him, but his main competition should be in prison for murder right now. There is a reason why the large (very large) majority of the US Military wants anyone but Clinton.

But hey, this isnt a political board. Just find it funny that people are saying things like "Trump is a white supremacist" just because he actually wants to address the issues that democrats want to ignore because that is where they get their votes.

I guess i dont understand what is happening. So he is funding a Trump support group? Where is the stuff about white supremacist? Must be missing it.

This. Maybe as a non-American I just have too much distance (or I'm ill-informed), but I can't say I'm a fan of how people are denigrating anyone who supports Trump as white supremacist. It's two steps away from crying Nazi, and we all know that never leads to good argument. Educate me if I'm wrong, I'm not as close to this as the majority of this forum.

Personally, I think the saddest thing about this election is that it's made progressives unconditionally back Hilary Clinton, because she's the lesser of two evils. But she's establishment, through and through, a huge step down from your current President, her record on foreign policy etc. is pretty unsettling and I can't say I'm excited by the prospect of her helming the most powerful and influential nation on the planet.

Is she preferable to Trump? Most definitely, but that doesn't make her appealing to me. I can't help but feel as though almost any other democrat candidate wouldn't even be surrounded by this 'will it, won't it' charade that the 2016 US election is currently mired in, and that it's only because it's Hilary Clinton that we're here at all.

Also, that line wasn't from the article, it was from the Nimble America facebook page. The article describes Palmer's involvement:

daily beast said:
Before becoming directly involved in the process, Luckey met the man who would serve as the liaison for the nascent political action group, and provide legitimacy to a Reddit audience for later donations without having to reveal Luckey’s identity: Breitbart tech editor and Trump booster Milo Yiannopoulos. The bleached-blonde political agitator is most notable for being permanently suspended from Twitter for harassment after a series of abusive messages to actress Leslie Jones.
Luckey first met the alt-right provocateur in Los Angeles about a year and a half ago, before Yiannopoulos began working on a charity to send white men to college. The Daily Beast later reported that the scholarship fund had resulted in zero financial distribution of the donations that had been made directly to Yiannopoulos’ bank account.
“I came into touch with them over Facebook,” Luckey said of the band of trolls behind the operation. “It went along the lines of ‘hey, I have a bunch of money. I would love to see more of this stuff.’ They wanted to build buzz and do fundraising.”
And that’s when the trouble began.

Along with Luckey, Nimble America was founded by two moderators of Reddit’s r/The_Donald, which helped popularize Trump-themed white supremacist and anti-Semitic memes along with 4Chan and 8Chan. A questionnaire to become a moderator at r/The_Donald posted in March had applicants answer the questions “Is there a difference between white nationalism and white supremacy?” and “Was 9/11 an inside job?”

The change alters the meaning, which is what I find curious.

It used to say:
"Facebook, which does not currently employ Luckey, did not respond to requests for comment by press time."

Now it says:
"Luckey's LinkedIn profile currently lists him as the founder of Oculus VR. He did not respond to requests for comment by press time."

That's the only change to the article, though. It's hardly enough to cast doubt on the rest of it. Oculus/Palmer fans are just reaching for justification to disbelieve.
It's not the only change, as the initial version of the article referred to Palmer Luckey as a "Silicon Valley fat cat" but I yield to your point.

Whether he's NimbleRichMan or not, he might as well be and deserves what's coming to him, given that A) he is rich and "self made" and B) spouts the same rhetoric constantly on twitter, as well as dates someone with similar views. I think he should get what's coming to him based on what he writes on Twitter and says in other public places, sure.

I'm just saying I don't think this is a top tier source. I can wait a few hours for confirmation, I'm not in a hurry.

It's been pointed out many times in this thread already, but this isn't about him supporting Trump. It's about him reportedly being a co-founder of and contributing funds to an alt right group with white supremacist propaganda.

You really don't have a good understanding of this.

Yo Palmer, I heard you hate political elites. So you're using your elite status to fund an elite's bid to defeat an elite.

Christ. I'm, like, legitimately pissed off at this motherfucker and his "Aw, shucks" public persona.

People aren't reading the article. Nimble America isn't a simple a group that supports Trump. It's founders and it's rhetoric is directly tied to white supremacy. This isn't just Trump voter = white supremacist.

He wasn't quoting the article. I don't even think that was written there. If you want to check previous versions of the webpage just use wayback machine.

The quote that he posted came from Nimble America's site. It's the user (NimbleRichMan) bio- per Kotaku.

NimbleRichMan is a near Billionaire and staunch supporter of the Common Sense Conservative movement. He is co-founder along with D.B. Purple and our third silent partner. Milo Yiannopoulos has personally vetted NimbleRichMan and the Non-Profit Nimble America, Inc. he helped create. NimbleRichMan will continue to guide Nimble America as its Vice-President.
