I guess this is where they got the idea for the poster..

I'm hoping for a single protagonist (or, at least one at a time). I don't care who it is. It's just that the three-character mechanic of GTA V felt really half-baked, especially with all the character stats and stuff.
That's what sequels are for, though? It being half-baked in GTA doesn't mean it would be here

2 images. Only 2 images. Internet goes crazy. Only Rockstar can do it, amazing.

Blizzard can do that too. In fact, both Rockstar and Blizzard are doing the same thign at the same time.

I'm way more hyped for RDR though.

What a time to be alive.

Anyone else think they are going to reveal one character a day?

Yeah up until Sunday and then drop the trailer.

I can't help but get excited about one possibility of being a character where part of the story has you travelling to recruit members for your gang or posse allowing you to switch and play as those recruited to. Throw in a feature where a friend can jump in your game to take control of one of those characters!

I'd argue that Nintendo could also do it. In particular with their current NX project :p Maybe also Pokemon, Mario and LoZ (though, perhaps, all of these to much smaller degrees than anything R*).

Are people serious with the 2017 release predictions lol

I'm expecting 2018 at the earliest, maybe 2019.

That's pretty much how Rockstar operates. They don't reveal stuff until they are confident in a release date that is generally less than a year out. Note that this doesn't account for delays, but a 2017 initial release date wouldn't be surprising.

I don't development, but..

Two completely random questions:

- How far from when VA's are done voice recording to when a game is done development in general?

- How long was RDR's development?

Red Dead Redemption is set on 1911, the last decade of the American Frontier.

It makes all the sense in the world for the game to be a prequel telling the story of John and the gang.

Or even a completely different story.

HYPE.

Game probably won't launch till like 2018 or mid 2019.

I can actually see this being the only new game they put out for the rest of this gen. What a time......

Umm... RDR characters? I'm not sure how you don't understand.

It would be a weird tease. Some of the gang were barely characters (and IIRC we didn't meet 7 of them, at least that had names). If they were just teasing a new version, there's little reason to focus on anyone but John.

Only problem with the prequel idea is that I thought the voice actor for Marston wasn't interested in doing anymore videogame work? I thought that was part of the Polygon interview with him years ago, or am I mistaken about that?

Also, it's a damn shame that the guy who played Landon Ricketts died because I would have loved to see that story weave into this one in slight ways, if it is a prequel.

Also, remember Rockstar's penchant for prequels, which aren't always directly sequential with the other stories. Technically Vice CIty and San Andreas are prequels to GTAIII, but they're also self-contained stories that don't directly lead into the game they're preceding.

yeah because it'd be impossible to use another voice actor.

Playing Dutchs gang would be so damn boring and underwhelming

New story and new characters please

I think this would be the best approach. If they're going to return to having multiple protagonists, I just hope they do a better job than in GTA V. As I said earlier, I think it would be cool to make a sort of frame narrative, but that would make the game much more linear.

That figure that looks like John Marston could be a throw off. Like how Red Harlow and John look alike, this is a new character that looks eerily similar to them.

A prequel would be pretty meh. Do people really want to play as Dutch's gang?
I'd play a prequel in the sense that it took place before Redemption and it didn't focus on John or Dutch's gang. I love John but I got all I needed out of him in Redemption.

If John is back, they got the VA back. They would have paid whatever it took. The voice is simply too big a part of the character to change.

Not sure about RDR's dev time, but I can give some insight into the VA process.

During the course of development, you'll have multiple VO shoots. The goal is to start with things that are as locked down as possible, so your barks for combat, general NPC greetings, etc. As the game develops and the script gets locked down for missions, the later shoots are used for those. There is usually a shoot close to the end of production called a pick-up shoot where anything that is missing or got added gets recorded. In general, at least in my experience, VO is something that happens mid-to-end of the production cycle.

Now, lots of studios use temp voice in the interim so that they can get a rough feel for things.

yeah because it'd be impossible to use another voice actor.

Well I wasn't implying it'd be impossible, but I think people would be disappointed if Marston were voiced by someone else, unless he was a less significant character. But wh oknows maybe Rockstar threw a bucket of money at the voice actor, too.
