Only problem with the prequel idea is that I thought the voice actor for Marston wasn't interested in doing anymore videogame work? I thought that was part of the Polygon interview with him years ago, or am I mistaken about that?

Also, it's a damn shame that the guy who played Landon Ricketts died because I would have loved to see that story weave into this one in slight ways, if it is a prequel.

Also, remember Rockstar's penchant for prequels, which aren't always directly sequential with the other stories. Technically Vice CIty and San Andreas are prequels to GTAIII, but they're also self-contained stories that don't directly lead into the game they're preceding.

They can get stone cold steve austin.. he sounds almost exactly the same.

It would be a weird tease. Some of the gang were barely characters (and IIRC we didn't meet 7 of them, at least that had names). If they were just teasing a new version, there's little reason to focus on anyone but John.
Well, yeah, they were barely characters because they weren't made to be

How does that stop them from being fleshed-out characters in this?

I hope they bring this back as dlc again. Would love to see how current gen tackles RDR with zombies.

Do people really think this is going to be a reveal for a 2018/19 release?

Spring 17 with a possible/probable delay to autumn surely?

Well I wasn't implying it'd be impossible, but I think people would be disappointed if Marston were voiced by someone else, unless he was a less significant character. But wh oknows maybe Rockstar threw a bucket of money at the voice actor, too.

if it is a prequel then they will be younger. voices change so they don't need the same person doing voices.

Dude had a postive experience with RDR though so I'm sure with the cash Rockstar would offer he would come back.

God hope it ain't a prequel with John we don't need see him before we know he did bad things RDR told us enough with John and Death plotlines.

Just need a rewind to height of Wild West and a new cast

He did say "if they want me, they'll call me", so it wasn't a "I'm out, fuck this" thing, it was more of a "I'm tired of the stress that is finding work in this industry" thing.

You could have a new character from Dutch's gang and tell a new story. Marston could be a support character.

You could, sure, but isn't RDR essentially the story of what ends up happening to the gang from Marston's perspective? That story has been told, as far as I'm concerned. The prospect of them fleshing out the posse's past seems a little redundant and less than ideal to me. RDR encapsulates it all nicely.

I would think a clean break gives them much more narrative wiggle room and us more surprises.

Imma play and likely love the bejeezus outta this. Just sayin'
.

I'm trying to control expectations. It might just be RDR costumes for GTA V online. Until thats ruled out, I'm not going to get too hyped. I'm totally calm.

BTW do you think they could do a prequel but only have John Marston as a minor character you briefly bump into?

That's pretty much how Rockstar operates. They don't reveal stuff until they are confident in a release date that is generally less than a year out. Note that this doesn't account for delays, but a 2017 initial release date wouldn't be surprising.

GTA V was announced around this time in 2011 with an initial release date of May 2013, which was then changed to September 2013.

Even Red Dead Redemption was announced in Feb 2009 and released in May 2010, a 15 month turn around.

This will be a 2018 title almost assuredly.

Red Dead: Sunset also includes Red Dead Online

Yay or Nay?

I'm not sure what I expect but GTAs online have done them really well wallet wise, think they'll do the same here kinda?

I want to play as Dutch. He seemed like a true badass, they don't make men like him no more!

And Abigail, will the story just shift to different missions with so many characters? This is going to be amazing!

I didn't suggest that.

The person I quoted was suggesting the image was for a PC version of the first game. Which makes no sense because using the gang to tease a remaster, especially when most of the characters were barely anything worth remembering. So it would have to be a new game for them to advertise them this way.

A direct prequel with the same cast of characters built from the ground up as a primarily multiplayer game sounds like every nightmare I've ever had about a RDR sequel.

i would be surprised if they didn't do Red Dead Online and honestly that kinda kills the hype for me a bit seeing what they did to GTA V.

yeah i'm dreading to see what this is. if it multiplayer focused i'm out.

Ah, my bad, missed that context

Times have changed, shorter cycles from announcement to release are preferable now.

I'm hoping we play as just 1 character - John - but you have your gang when you need them for missions etc.

The pessimistic side of me thinks there's a good chance this will be primarily a multiplayer/MMO-lite kind of game that you can "technically" play single player (but you're gonna have a bad time). Gotta rake in those Stallion Card(TM) microtransactions, baybeeeeeee.

Rockstar ain't the average dev team.

They always take their time on this. Like for real anybody getting their hopes up for a spring 2017 release are hurting themselves.
