Details on Joy-Con controllers/Pro Controller for Nintendo Switch

A few questions:

1. So how to the Joy-cons operate when not connected to the tablet? Do they have their own individual battery? If so, that means that when I'm on the go, that's 3 battery lives to keep track of?

2. Do Pro controllers work on the tablet in portable mode? They've only been shown to work when the home dock is present.

The pro controller comes with the console?

Highly unlikely.

It probably comes with the grip to attach the detachable controllers to sine it needs to be playable docked out of the box. Pro controller will be for people who want a nicer pad and local MP games where everyone needs a full controller rather than one of the detachable sides.

I can play 2 player split screen Mario kart on the train
2 player Mario kart on the train
do you not realise how amazing that is????
Again, you can but how often do you think people will do this and will it outweigh the negatives of the Joy-cons in the long run? Personally, I don't think so.

There will always be some people who use features that will be considered superfluous by the majority.

that's what I thought. but that defeats the whole purpose of playing together without having to buy extra stuff.

Not a good idea, imo.
No it doesn't. Some games will just use one Joy Con. Otherwise what you are suggesting would require 2 analog sticks on each side.

For short sessions I think it will not be a problem but yes that doesn't seem very confortable.

Wonder how would the battery life be on portable mode?

We have three detachable modules - screen and two JoyCons (three things to charge minimum).

I wont buy a switch if there is no option for a proper d-pad.

Also what if one of the Joy-Con's break? Will you have to pay 60$ to buy two to only replace that one side?

On a recent Nintendo Voice Chat, Peer Schneider mentioned that his sources told him the Joy-Cons were being built to be Nunchuck-cheap.

Man, what's gonna happen when kids lose or misplace the split controller ends of the Joy-Con. I wonder how much it's gonna cost to replace them?

1. Here's my two cents. They do have rechargeable batteries... and they charge when connected to the "tablet"and they're either on the dock or through AC connector. You can also charge them on the controller module... you can see each side has 4 LEDs, i think those are there to tell you the battery levels on the joy-cons.

Once again, the controllers leave me wanting. We need more info on the Pro but it looks extremely cheap. I also am unambiguously scoffing at the concept of playing split screen with a friend on this thing.

Who the hell is going to play a game using this tiny thing?
And how, with half the buttons?

Who the hell has hands even small enough for it to be comfortable?

Probably everyone who is able to comfortably text on their smartphones in portrait mode?

Still shocked there isn't a traditional d-pad on there. Makes me feel old. I love separated controller parts like on the Wii. I wonder what this kinda set up means for the mobile market and what specifically Nintendo has planned for this as far as interactivity between switch software and their mobile games.

This is what I see every time I look at it:

there's nothing "old" about a d-pad. It's NOT cool to not have one. I'm not confident that the buttons on the left controller can mimic a dpad effectively. Fighting games and platformers may suffer here. Look how far those buttons are spaced out. Oof.

Man, this is like Mario Kart Advance all over again...just that you are limited to split-screen ;)

I'm guessing if your buddy brings his/her Switch, you'll be able to play local multi on your own screens just like the NBA 2K demo in the trailer.

Huh? That they're shown used without being attached (either individually or as a pair) indicates that they MUST be communicating wirelessly.

I guess I meant radio signal or whatever would upset a plane wireless. Like it can't be using wifi or bluetooth or whatever the Wii u controller uses. The only thing I can think of that would be ok to use on a plane is IR, but that would mean the controller would need a reasonably good line of sight to the unit.

Perhaps that is partly the point of the controller you can slot the joycons into, maybe that thing does communicate via Bluetooth or whatever so you don't have to worry about the IR signal getting to the main unit. That would explain why it needs power/has lights on it, otherwise it could just as well be a piece of plastic.

I really hope it brings back pointer controls. I also notice that nothing materialized regarding those scroll-wheel shoulder button designs.

Good ergonomics being optional is bad.

Better ergonomics, not good. Have you held the Wii U gamepad? It's bulky, sure, but it's also comfortable to play on. Why are both of the two single-player control options suddenly an unwieldy mess?

So the video showed people playing MK8 with the joycons, how the hell are you going to comfortably hit the shoulder button to activate drift? Holding either side with the joystick to the left would mean the shoulder button would be on the UNDERSIDE of the controller. Awkward as fuck.

So what happens when I'm playing a FPS at home using the pro controller, and then take the unit with me on the go? What is the equivalent to the triggers on the portable unit?

Technically, the shoulder button curves around to the side of the controller. One controller will have it on the left side. The other will have it on the right. Should be easy to press with the "meat" of your index finger.

1. Should be moot as I'm sure the battery life on them is way longer than the tablet and they'd charge when you reattach them and charge the unit.

2. It does. They showed people playing Splatoon on the tablet using the pro controller at the e-sports event toward the end of the trailer.

There's definitely a market for slide on accessories, even just rearranged controls for those that want the right analog to be above the buttons rather than below...

Man I really love the look of this just as a portable. Really nice screen. Hopefully it's IPS and 720p will be absolutely fine for gaming. Certainly far better than anything we've seen on a Ninty handheld before now.

One of the pics the joycon has two button stacked on top of one another like the wii u pad. This effectively has the shoulder and trigger buttons needed for fps.
