Details on Joy-Con controllers/Pro Controller for Nintendo Switch

There's definitely a market for slide on accessories, even just rearranged controls for those that want the right analog to be above the buttons rather than below...

Man I really love the look of this just as a portable. Really nice screen. Hopefully it's IPS and 720p will be absolutely fine for gaming. Certainly far better than anything we've seen on a Ninty handheld before now.

I'd buy alternate joycons with slide pads and a real dpad in a heartbeat.

Yes, but I'd actually doubt the LEDs would show the battery status all the time. But sure, you could definitely be right with that.

Thinking about it further, there's two purposes for the LEDs.

1) The one I listed which is battery life for each side controller
2) Player indicator (player 1-4)

I'm guessing the light(s) turn red when the battery runs low and is green normally. You charge the controllers by putting them in the "holster". They likely blink when charging and go solid once full.

Please tell me they use internal rechargeable batteries and not imbecile AAs or AAAs

Is this seriously a real question? The last 3 major Nintendo handhelds have all had internal rechargeable batteries and so does the Wii U GamePad. There hasn't been a Nintendo handheld that used batteries since the Gameboy Color.

I love the pro, but those mini controllers look bad.

My friend Scruggles just made this timely political commentary on them...

The console looks like it might get some work still.

I remember the Wii U and DS looked a bit different when announced

We are in a pretty similar timeframe compared to the Wii U, 5 months from launch compared to 7. If anything needs work for me, it's that pro controller. That seriously looks like a prototype.

Oh, and thank the laaawwwd they dropped the shiny plastic from the Wii and Wii U controllers. The fingerprints those things attracted begged me to no end.

What I'm wondering here is why does the Joy-Con Grip have two lines of LEDs? Wouldn't one be enough?

Ah, sorry, I read you wrong. The Pro controllers seem to only have one strip of four LEDs, though.

My question is, why would you need two even if there are two Joy-Cons present? Both strips of LEDs should always show the same.

gotta check battery life for both parts I presume

So how cool would it be if that Switch Pro controller was really just a redesigned Wii U Pro controller, and the two of them were 100% forwards/backwards compatible with each other?

Please do this Nintendo. Don't pull a Microsoft/Sony and break controller compatibility just for the sake of forcing us to buy more plastic clutter.

Wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo has some unique controller options coming down the road (along with games that require their use).

Hell, they could just release special edition joy-cons for Pokemon or Zelda and people would but them.

Anyone know yet when you turn the Joy-Cons on the side, where it would slide into the Tablet, are there two shoulder buttons on top so that there are a total of six usable buttons?

It's funny that the only reason I would ever buy a Wii U Pro Controller would be to use it in place of the terrible Switch Pro Controller. Assuming split joycons don't work with a docked Switch anyway.

That would be cool, but Wii U Pro Controller misses the share button though ;).

The pictures and video do reveal 2 Shoulder buttons on each joycon

Didn't read every reply in thread. Was wondering if detachable controllers have shoulder buttons and triggers as well?
Each will have two, but if you mean when used individually sideways they'll be lumped together awkwardly on the side rather than feeling like shoulder buttons in that mode.

We're seeing this much closer to launch than in those cases, with rumors suggesting production has already started. If there are differences from what we see here, they'll be very minor.

Original GBA too, but that's still an age ago.

I think I noticed when the women were playing on the rooftop that there are top buttons on two player mode. Can you guys see it too or am I just imagining it?

No, reread what I'm talking about. I'm talking about when they're split and you're using them each as an individual controller. Take each one, rotate it 90 degrees, the top is where it slides into the tablet, now on top, where the slide connector is, also has buttons built into it? The existing ones you're referring to won't be very usable when held that way.

Oh get what you're saying. No I dont think so. I get that 2player local as novelty, light gaming, So I expect not so usable shoulder buttons :(

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
So what happens when I'm playing a FPS at home using the pro controller, and then take the unit with me on the go? What is the equivalent to the triggers on the portable unit?
The joy-con has triggers.

Well it's time to decide: Trade in my new N3DS and games for the Nintendo Switch or trade in my Wii U for the Nintendo Switch. Wished it was BC with the new N3Ds or the Wii U.

I referred to this and Tangeroo confirmed that he sees it too.

Those don't even look like the same controllers though. Look how they're smooth and you see buttons. That implies that's the outside edge and not the edge that connects. Now look at any other pic of the controllers attached to the tablet. You don't see any buttons in those positions on the smooth side. Something is off about that pic.

The side with the shoulder buttons on top is the side that connects into the "holster". The reason why it's smooth in other pics is because that's the "bottom" edge of the joycons.

Looks like you're right.

Nice! Playing Mario Kart actually seems feasible and more comfortable rather than the clunky wii variant. I think its also more comfortable to hold since they spaced the analog and buttons close together so your plams have more surface area to grip with. I think this implementation is vastly better than the wii's wiimote.

Nintendo hasn't announced any details outside of the 3 minute trailer. We still don't know anything about BC

But that's not what the side that fits in to the holster looks like. It's not smooth like it is being shown in that pic. The smoother side is the outside edge. The controllers in that pic don't mesh with the other pics of the controller.

Edit:

Here, look at this pic, it shows that it's not the same.
