Digital Foundry: PlayStation 4 Pro Review: The First 4K Games Console?

These in-between resolutions being used by games worry me, as a 4K TV owner. 1080p upscales smoothly to 4K as it is equally divisible, whereas resolutions such as 1440p and above, tend to not be quite as efficient. It's not always true that because there is less upscaling necessary that you are going to get a better quality image over 1080p.

PC gaming is expensive. To upgrade my PC I'd need new RAM, a new motherboard, a new CPU and a new GPU.

how old is your pc!? my pc is 5 years old and all I had to upgrade was my gpu and psu.

im still running on a i5 2500k and now that i got all my issues fixed with my cpu and oced it just a tad bit, im crushing my ps4 and xbox one

My last gaming PC cost $1200 in 2007.

My PS4 cost $400. My WiiU cost $205. My Xbox 360 cost $260. My PS3 cost $255. So four consoles for less than the price of one PC.

Tomorrows Paragon patch adds these new improvements to the game.

PS4 Pro Support added
Extra grass/foliage.
Volumetric effects. (lightshafts, extra fog at base, etc)
Farther HLOD and viewdistance.
Screen Space Reflections.
Motion Blur.
Contact Shadows.
Improved Bloom.
Full 1080p resolution.

Amazing work from Epic Games

Do you, or anyone else on this thread, know if there's going to be any upgrades to Fallout 4?

This. Like upgrading my PC is not just a GPU upgrade... Tbh, I need to rebuild the entire thing. I paid $100 for this upgrade and that's with my trade in.. The graphics card in my current PC won't even trade in for half of the cost of a 1080 and I can't just bring it to a local gamestop or best buy to get that value with a bunch of games or maybe controller and use that credit towards a new card..

Do some people realize that not all PCs are built the same compared to consoles that are?

Shame it wont produced the same graphics PS5 would.

I have no idea where we're going with this lol

To get back to the point (which was what a upgrade would cost), I really don't think on a PC an upgrade akin to the one between PS4 and Pro would cost that much more than the 400 dollars of the console.

If I understand correctly you'd just have to overclock your CPU and buy a beefy GPU. I think the cost would be pretty similar.

Edit: of course that's assuming you already have a PC, otherwise I don't understand what we're arguing about. Of course a PC is more expensive than a console.

I guess it's more expensive for you seeing as your PC is almost 10 years old, what hardware does it have btw?
The Xbox 360 and PS3 were fairly high-end systems at the time of release, the PS4 and Xbox One were basically in the middle of mid range to low-end systems at their time of release.

Times have changed now and capable PC hardware that is similar in power to or more powerful than the consoles is a lot more affordable.
An Intel Quad Core build from the past 4-5 years would likely just require a GPU upgrade and maybe some additional ram for around £180-300 and be above the PS4 Pro.

I have a spare SSD that I am considering returning. Hopefully there will be loadtime comparisons done before Thursday. If it's a negligible upgrade, I'll take the drive back.

Is this game F2P or have a demo?

Has there been any tests yet? SSD showed pretty good improvements on OG PS4, not sure why Pro wouldnt.

The embargo was lifted and I cant help but feel disappointed with the coverage...

Its pretty much scraps of information. Comparisons are nowhere to be found.

Thought people who had the consoles were preparing for today adequately... guess i was wrong.

Yeah, I keep looking for a master list of games that shows the resolution and avg framerate of OG PS4, compared to the various options on Pro. I'd love to see how Battlefield 1 looks and performs on a 1080p set.

Goddamit, that sucks, alot. I was hoping to finally be rid of my loud old heat throwing PS4 only to walk right into another :(

Yep.I guess I'm out until they make one that doesn't sound like a blow dryer. Already went through two super loud PS4's, really don't want another one. Love the console but this is the first time when I need my console to remain quiet, especially at night.

I think you're overreacting just a bit.....DF mentions how the pitch is noticeable at times, but another site calls it the "Quietest PS4 to date", so honestly i think this is going to vary based on a ton of factors. Quite frankly, i think this issue needs to be fully explored by one of these review sites and i'm surprised that no one has despite the fact that they've had this console for days or weeks to test it out.

I think we need to wait for more details on this before freaking out.

ah man are you serious..... That fucking sucks ass. My ps4 was already a jet plane. Fucking christ man, what a bummer.

Intel C2D E6420 (overclocked to 2.8 GHZ, lol)
Nvidia 768 MB GTX 460 (Replaced the original 320MB 8800 GTS which died after four years)
2 whole GB of RAM

Most media outlets don't really have the staff or the technical know how to actually compare these types of things on a fine grain level. That is why DF, VG Gamer, NX gamer and such exist.

They can only do general side by sides which can be very misleading on places like youtube.

Does Uncharted 4 have any PS4 Pro enhancements for 1080p TV sets (e.g. supersampling)?

The campaign is 1440p 30fps and the multiplayer is 1080p 60fps. So in campaign yes. Multiplayer gets native res and 60fps.

my gaming pc in 2011 cost about 1200 as well.

my xbox 360 didn't cost 260 tho...it cost 300. my ps3 cost 300. my xbox one cost 350. my ps4 (launch) cost 400.

1350.

i upgraded my gpu and my psu on my pc - 500.

not spending 400 on ps4 pro and scorpio (lets just say scorpio is 500)

i save 400.

Some can't see that though. So for them it's not worth it. That's fine.

There's a clear difference in resolution and it's quite easy to tell, even on a 1080p TV. But maybe you're right, some just can't see it.

Because at 1080p, I don't think it's worth spending $400. For 4k TV owners, I say go right ahead.

You said "If you already own a PS4? Not worth it. If you don't have a PS4 yet, absolutely pick the Pro over the Slim"

If the person in question has a PS4, they will most likely trade it towards the Pro and save around $150-200.

If I had a GTX 750 and wanted to upgrade to a RX 470 for better image quality, framerates and graphical features at 1080p, wouldn't that be a worthy upgrade?

More quiet than the OG model as well. And there are games offering better frame rate and more detail.

That might not be enough for some to take the plunge, which is fine, but to say there are no benefits for 1080p owners is plain wrong.

Absolutely. There are plenty of benefits for a very small price increases.

Those $255 PS3's on release sure were hot.

Seriously, what a disingenuous reply.

Downsample from a native 4K (which will look very nice) and possible slight increase in view distance. Note that the view distance is already higher than what the vanilla PC release could do!

This is not true. It is exactly the same as the vanilla PC could do... and that's only if you ignore ugrids .ini tweak, which you shouldn't.

Also, apparently this is still nto true according to DF:

"Draw distances are also fleshed out with more in the way of foliage and geometric objects visible at range, whereas on PS4 and Xbox One the game's LOD system is slightly more aggressive in culling these details. This leads to slightly more in the way of pop-in, though this aspect of the game is improved over the original PC version. Furthermore, volumetric lighting is also given a slightly stronger implementation, which creates a little more bloom within light shafts over the PS4 and Xbox One versions."

Sony confirmed that it will be available day one.

Thank you. Sounds like a worthy upgrade from my PS3 version.

Throw in the avg. $50/yr for XBL and PSN, so don't forget the extra $400 for the past 8 years of online play. And that's assuming you only paid for one service for the last 8 years.

Meanwhile, that money just disappears. You can't sell that online time.

If you think it's worth it then that's fine, I personally don't. The graphics card comparison doesn't quite work either as when you upgrade your GPU, you aren't limited to what options the devs see fit, if I want to run a game in 60fps, I can with a new GPU..It's MY choice. I can also go back and play older games at much higher fps/resolution with a GPU too, the Pro for the most part is current and future titles only, and who knows how many of those will be half arsed attempts.

great point, on pc, you won't be paying for that.
