Digital Foundry: PlayStation 4 Pro Review: The First 4K Games Console?

Why did you preorder it if the only games you wanted to get a patch hadn't even been announced?

Pre-ordering is free? I was also convinced that we'd hear about a Bloodborne patch, what with Sony publishing the game. Even Persona 5 isn't getting a Pro mode, and that's coming out in February (I understand that the Japanese release date is what counts).

I mean, is there any medical research into this syndrome they develop where 30fps makes them feel sick, uncomfortable, causes eye strain or makes the game unplayable for whatever reason?...

It's called pretentiousitis, cases have also been diagnosed when PS4 and XB1 players compare resolutions.

Rainbow 6 in 1080p looks beautiful.

I watch a stream of someone called Tangy quite a long and it always looks amazing.

Would love a 1080p patch!

Yea, I have it on PC and it's really apparent the difference in resolution. But I largely chalked that up to the PS4 resolution being something like 900p.

540p though... that's crazy.

How would a 1440p monitor fair with the PS4 Pro now that some of these games are coming out with info that they are running at 1440p? I asked this question before but we generally figured it would do 1080p or 4K. For example, if you used a 1440p monitor I feared it would push it down to 1080p since most people play on tv's and tv's don't do 1440p. It was strictly a PC resolution.

My dilemma is that I like to play on a monitor, if I use a 4K monitor it ruins my PC gaming because I can't natively play games in 4K on a 1070. But 1440p would be a sweet spot and if it still looks good on the Pro then that would be a perfect monitor upgrade from the 27" 1080p one I'm using now.

It's not 540p as it's generally referred to. The rendering resolution could be considered 960x1080 or 1920x540. So it's 1080p rendering half the pixels. So the closest approximation in standard 16:9 would be 763p.
To find an approximation of the number of pixels for cb with the way resolutions are generally referred to (540p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2160p...)
((16/9)*p)*p)/2=((16/9)*x)*x) where p is the resolution you want out and x is the number of pixels you're rendering put into 16:9.
This simplifies to: x=sqrt((p^2)/2)=p/sqrt(2)
Plug 1080 in and you get 763.

PS4 Pro will be 1080p on a 1440p monitor.

Pro only outputs 1080p or 4k

"only" 1440p or 1800p upscaled or etc.

I don't get it.... I think it's in this thread as well as on others on GAF today...but

I used to always hear from some PC gamers, that 1440p is the sweet spot for them...even when they have powerful rigs.

so why is 1440p that gets checkerboarded to 4k, getting bashed now?

the console only costs $399.

If it's a game that comes out after the 10th then largely no, they'll have it on the disk. There may be games that didn't have it ready for the master and there may be games (FFXV and UC4 probably) that will have a mode, but may then get a patch to improve it again.

thanks

Yeah but it's been a hot topic here on gaf and the internet at large waiting for Bloodborne, a year old game by a company that already released another title in its similar franchise this year, to have a patch announcement. It never came and most are assuming it won't. Sony pushed Bb at the time but it's done now (despite Last of Us getting one!)

I still hope it gets one but assuming with no facts never works out well. Like you said though, pre-orders can be free :)

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony

The values for certain people have shifted very fast it seems. We went from 1080p being just fine to 1440p and above being underwhelming within several days it seems.

But on the other hand, putting down money for anything is an important proposition. 399 is still a decent amount of money to invest in something you want to be fully supported and exploited.

At the same time it costs a hell of a lot more than $399 to hit 1440p on anything near modern on PC. The GPU alone will cost $150 at bare minimum and that won't run most of the more demanding games at 1440p even at 30 fps very well, let alone above that.

Definitely a case of moving goalposts from some people, but that's just the way it is I guess.

true...and I think with Sony requiring all future titles to be supported should be comforting.

also for those who invested in PSVR.

It's all relative. 720p was amazing in 2006, but I wouldn't tough a game at that resolution these days, and it's the same with 1440p. Especially when I've had a 4K monitor for 2.5 years.

The PS4 would only display in 1080p or 4K, nothing inbetween. It would send a 1080p signal to a 1440p monitor, and your monitor would have to deal with the upscaling.

so have you been playing at 4k 60fps for the past 2 years? or last year or recently?

which card/setup supports that?

it was one reason I shyed away from finally building a gaming rig... when they had that HP deal last year for the 980ti.....I read folks not getting 4K on it, at least 60fps.. then when the new 1070 and 80 cards... I didn't get the feeling folks were playing at 4k 60fps either.

man, I remember on the PS3 you could force resolutions.

so you could force to send out 1080p, by unchecking 720p from the list.

if they brought back that video option, would it help JayBabay's situation? Where you force the PS4 Pro to output at 4K?

edit- if he/she didn't want to get the graphical benefits of 1080p upscaled to 1440p.

man, Richard is so annoying... They picked not a great HDR TV (known to anyone who ever read any review of it), and conclusion is that HDR is in infancy since they chose to not follow any advice ever posted by anyone when purchasing HDR TV.

Nothing will make their TV better at HDR... what would have made it better is reading specs and reviews and buying appropriate TV for same money.

he specifically said their TV isnt great for HDR and the results scale with how good your tv is

You won't get 4k 60fps on a 1080 with 'max details' yes, but usually those extreme settings have marginal improvement for a significant performance penalty. Tone down the quality settings to something more akin to what a Pro will be running at and you'll get 60 or close with most games.

Again though, that's a card that costs $250-$300 more than the Pro itself , so I sure as hell would hope that's the case. The 1070 is a more sensible comparison but even that's the same price as the Pro. It's definitely reset the value proposition of PC v console as opposed to a few months ago when a $170 RX470 would stomp a PS4.

So I know downsampled 4K games will still benefit 1080p users. Does that mean I need to specify "4K mode" with any compatible games before I see an improvement or will that be automatically detected on the Pro?

should automatically be detected unless the game offers different distinct modes (tomb raider)

I have a feeling that ND did a quick & dirty resolution upgrade for now because they are trying something crazy with the PS4 Pro. maybe they are seeing how much FP32 code they can get away with using FP16 with.

Very much how people say PC ports are hamstringed by consoles, I'm thinking the same will be the case between Pro vs. OG.

the pro autodetects and sets the resolution when the PS4 is set to auto. I assume setting it manually to 1080p will force 4k games to downsample.

i think it will be much better and convenient if you play on a native 1080p TV instead of expecting game consoles to keep up

so shouldn't this help JayBabay's situation???

If he selected 4K....it should down sample to 1440p for his Monitor?

unless I'm missing something here.

From what I understand, you cannot select 1440p. The game may be rendering at 1440p but it get downsampled to 1080p or upscalled to 4k. I don't think there is a pure 1440p output on the Pro.

Yeah, exactly. I just watched the Uncharted video and he specifically says that the Panasonic 4k set they have is good, but not great for HDR. He then goes on about the Sony ZD9. What was funny about that is they way he was talking about the price of the ZD9..just the way he phrased it of it being expensive and saying "it's expensive, something like $4,000.00 US". $4,000.00 for the ZD9 would be a steal, it current price is $5499.99, it was at $5999.99 just recently.

But a lot of impressions of the HDR on the pro from the media where they gushed over the HDR was because most of the media have tried it on the ZD9 Series of sets, which do indeed have the best HDR you can buy right now, even over OLED.
