Nintendo files trademark for "Wave Race" in Europe

Why? Just pessimism?

Part pessimism, yeah. It is a sport/racing game. Other then Mario Kart/Sports they don't seem to be showing much interest in those. And if they do they're usually part of a Mii series.

This, Pilot wings or Star Fox don't seem like the type of games modern Nintendo is going to put top effort into.

What makes you think they won't change? A few months ago The Elder Scrolls on a Nintendo console would be laughed at and nobody was thinking that a 64-style Mario game might be there at launch. Nintendo seems adamant in leaving the Wii/DS era behind; there's little evidence from what we know of the Switch that they're not doing that.

Seems like we've gone from 1% chance to 5% chance.

It's funny to read this considering those two sold gangbusters for Nintendo. But yeah, those brands have played their part at this point. It's time to move on with something fresh.

I think Nintendo might surprise you a little with what they put out this gen.

I agree with comments about Wave Race being done internally at EAD and that Retro is working on what most people really. want. from them.

Anyone care to tell me who Matt is? Why is everything he says about Switch followed by "OOHHH AAHHH" ? Matt Casamassina?

Yeah, I was more talking about the Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS and the whole line of thinking that came with it. Shiny plastic design, Miis in games that aren't social sims like Tomodachi, the "Wii" name, simplification down of Zelda and Mario, stuff like that. There's really nothing much at all to show that Nintendo will continue that line of thinking. The Switch trailer alone is worlds apart from the original Wii U trailer which, taking away the terrible information delivery, just had a really bad "style" to it.

Perhaps the reason Nintendo may go for Wave Race is because NVIDIA wanted to show their water tech. It can he a showcase for the architecture. Maybe this is why Mario Kart won't release at launch even though it's ready. To make way for Wave Race as a launch title.

Wave Race would work with local multiplayer splitscreen in portable mode with both JoyCons for 2 players. It can also use optional Gyro gimmick like playing like a iPad game without controllers attached.

Finally a game like Wave Race gas more of a chance to sell at launch than later down the line. It can be the showcase racer available for launch. You always need one racer in the launch lineup. Mario Kart is too popular and needs it's own time to get sales and having 2 Mario games even though they are from different genres is still overboard.

So maybe the launch line up is

Super Mario 128 - Platformer
Wave Race - Racer
Spla2oon - Shooter
The Elder Scrolls Skyrim - RPG
Tekken 7 or Injustice 2 - Fighter
NBA 2K17 - Sports
Ubisoft Game - ?

There you have it a varied launch lineup.

This listing doesn't mean anything while the status is under examination. It's possible it wasn't filed by Nintendo. Its a common hoax

A new Wave Race before F-Zero? Seems kind of weird, but alright. I'll give it a shot if a new game actually materializes.

Well, it has been 15 years since the last Wave Race.

I still play Wave Race 64 every now and then. Stunt mode especially is/was so addicting!

I really feel that with the Switch, we will see a new F-Zero.

Also, I need a new Pilotwings 64 2.

I was literally wondering last week why Nintendo has ignored this franchise for two generations. Aside from Virtual Console releases.

If it's EPD developed (assuming a new title exists) it would be neat. I liked the wave physics in Pikmin 3 when you run around in a puddle of water.

So I'd care more about the physics being good than to have pretty water.
