Ellie is the main playable character in The Last of Us: Part II

What possible motivation does she have for killing Joel, exactly? "He wouldn't let me get cut up by idiots who were shooting in the dark for a vaccine"? Dumb.

Can't see him becoming abusive toward his surrogate daughter either. Why is the first instinct "oh that guy in the doorway MUST be an imaginary friend of a 19 year old" as well? Way too early for jumping to these big conclusions.
Gamers projecting their hatred of Joel for not sacrificing another daughter to the greater good onto Ellie.

There are quite a few of them on GAF.

Boom! Bitch-slapped!
There are no zingers. She's an angsty and angry young adult who plays Linkin Park on her guitar

Well she was full of them in the first game, especially with Bill. She cracked me up during that part of the game. I don't expect her to change in that regard, well at least I hope she doesn't.

I love Pokken!
I mean if you're gonna be posting Milo's shit while complaining about men being feminists you'd be much more welcome on kotakuinaction or voat instead of a progressive forum, because no one here likes assholes. Ellie is literally singing after having killed a bunch of people with fresh wounds and somehow this won't be visceral, Joel hasn't done anywhere near this metal.

Huh what? Joel at the final chapters of TLOU is basically a walking killing machine.

You can be honest without linking to the malice spouted by white supremacist misogynistic homophobes.
Post is just full of bigotry, labeling and grouping ideas about hate together as if they are invariably connected, based off of a small amount of information given in the post.

Whatever. 👫

Or that he turned out to be the same as the rest. Wanting to get rid of her every step of the way. Lying to her when she wanted the absolute truth.

But yeah, projections.

I would argue that killing and soon after singing a light hearted song in the dust of your battle is more metal.

The disconnect she can have between what she just did to the point she decides to break into song is more interesting and brings into the question of her mental state and how she views her actions.

So did you stop playing the game during the Winter chapter.

Isn't that when you control Ellie? Yea he felt uncomfortable by that.

See, I always hated Nathan drake because he felt like a douchebag. I really don't love uncharted or it's characters and last of us helped me see how right I was

But everything Joel did felt justified. Not sure why people want him to die or why they think his lie matters so much. I don't see any of that even being mentioned in part 2

Milo is literally a white supremacist so yes, everything he has to say belongs in that label.

Is that a problem?

Did you play "The Last Of Us - Winter" or "The Last Of Us: Left Behind"?

Ellie clears out entire towns of people/creatures in brutally efficient style.

And? Joel was the killer in question. Joel has killed more people over the years than Ellie. He is far more brutal and metal than Ellie. He's had to be to survive.

Its almost as if he can't just take the L and admit that his comment was stupid af, makes no sense, is an embarrassment and just call it a day. At this point, this isn't a disagreement so when will he stop treating it like one?

He never sang about killing his enemies afterwards though, especially not while bleeding. She was 14 and made it past a shit ton of men who should easily be able to outmaneuver her.

So we're gonna make the only likable character in the first game completely unlikable like Joel in the second?
Uhh... what?

Joel wasn't unlikable. His decision at the end was surely questionable, but it's a logical and not unreasonable decision for a man to make when he wants to protect someone.

Might be wrong, might be right.

*sigh*

I don't like Ellie and playing as her will be unbearable for me.

What about those of us that liked playing as Joel?!?

Hype deflated 100%

:(

Ellie was weak in the first game which made combat encounter much harder. After 5 years of training there is no reason to think that she won't be a competent killer.

All hail the future best female lead in the industry

I have said Ellie will surpass Lara Croft as the biggest female character in gaming if they did a sequel. Now that we know she is the lead with ND's writing, directing and use of excellent voice actors it is about to happen. Druckmann said the first game was her origin story and now it's her time to shine. Aloy, Ellie and Kat. Sony going in hard with strong female protagonists.

ages 10 years in the game
- so?

I'm not a female, nor am I a teenager - so that makes me not relate to Ellie and makes me uninterested in playing as her. Noctis is a male - which I am also - but I'm not 20. But I love anime, fantasy games and action games, so therefore he's a very relatable, likeable character to me. Ellie is a whiny, stubborn, too-cool-for-school, grungy teenager that has a chip on her shoulder and if I played The Last of Us Part II, I'd be forced to only play as her.

That doesn't seem very interesting, fun, worthwhile or a good way to spend my entertainment time.

Then don't play it? Move along please for the people who are excited to play this game regardless of the gender and age of the character.

Im going to miss playing as Joel. I love the dad power and forcing someones neck to shards of glass. He just felt so powerful and masculine. I absolutely loved Joel's demeanour and "tired of this shit" attitude.

Im up for Ellie, but I always loved LoU for Joel's story. Would love an inverse of the first game and play as him too for a bit, because the big thing I loved about LoU was the weightiness of everything. A big part of that is because of Joel and the guns.

I'm guessing while Joel's combat was rough and strong, Ellie will be fast and furious. I'm kind of already disgusted at the thought of a knife sliding in and out of a throat, which isn't something Joel really did. I can see Ellie shanking dudes with blind fury.

I still remember the first game making me so uncomfortable. I still wonder if there will female enemies. People like Tess were awesome, and I wanted to see more of her.

I'll also miss playing as Joel but remember, Ellie was only 14 in the first game and was pretty inexperienced, all things considered, when it came to fighting. This is 5 years later, so not only has she grown physically but I imagine she is a far more capable fighter now. I don't reckon she'll be able to match the pure strength and brutality of Joel when it comes to close quarter battles, but she will definitely be more of a presence than in the first game, where her melee hits did not interrupt enemy animations and she was limited to the knife. She'll likely be able to pick up and use melee weapons and choke out enemies now as well.

What's the difference if Ellie is just as "metal" as Joel or not. Does that somehow make you feel better for having to play a female character? God forbid a female character has any feminity, she needs to be "brutal" or "visceral" or whatever else people are using to describe her.

Saying you'd play as a woman only on the condition that she's as much of a killing machine as the male lead from the first game is just as bad as saying you wouldn't play as a woman under any circumstances.

Don't try to sugarcoat your lack of ability to connect to a woman in any way by using her personality as an excuse.

Can't wait for TLoU2, 2019 is toooo long. I only hope Ellie is brutal as all fuck and ND doesn't play the stereotypical "women are compassionate" angle with her.

Why would they?
when she was 14 she was almost raped and chopped a dudes head into pieces for it.
She's killed many people herself, especially after the Hotel

In other words, why even ask that question? She's got anger in her face and I am dying to know why. If this girl was just trying to survive as a 14 year old, then as a 19 year old she should be hardened like Joel, in her own, brutal, unflinching and unhesitant way.

Love the part II like the Godfather, part two will be better than the original. We could have lots of flashbacks with Joel. Ellie wouldn't kill Joel. Is only 4 years after Joel was in his 40s he could still go. The one thing I want to know of if Ellie knows that Joel lied and what did she do. Now that she's older I think she would agree with Joel decision or understand it. Is going to be epic ether way. From the looks of the trailer is going to be much more violent and bloody than part one.

He's talking about the killing and than sit down to sing (i think)

Ahh, okay.

That's more cold and distant behavior - but Joel jumps stupid through town - breaking skulls with his fists, ramming heads against walls, swinging lead pipes/breaking bones, shooting folks in the face and killing clickers left and right, covering himself and the streets in blood...and then turning around and smiling at Ellie, asking if she's OK.

That's metal.

That just sounds like a father surviving with his child.

What you would expect a father to do. Bash skulls and console their child.

Truly nothing special or metal about consoling Ellie after killing.

Sounds like you are fantasizing fatherhood/parenthood.

Now a 19 year old girl seeking out a group of armed people to kill for her own reasons and then singing afterwards, no contest. You have a character that is not expected to act a certain way and she is able to be a cold blooded killer. Then you see her hand shake probably due to the emotions of killing and fighting. But then she just start singing.

C'mon now. If I had to face two bosses in Dark Souls and one of them just started singing after killing some people I would know that boss is metal.

A reasonable enough point, but Ellie was already very composed and good at killing people, so folks are just looking forward to seeing her again and having that continue.

This level of double standard is absolutely astounding. Imagine if everytime a standard triple-A came out with a white straight male as a lead, everyone who doesn't identify with that made sure to post their displeasure like you have.

He didn't sacrifice his first. What is that about? Why do you have to hate Joel to think that their relationship could strain as the years go on? This doesn't pick up the day after the first game. More crap could've happened in the meantime.

I love people dismissing hypotheticals because when none of us know what's up.

I didn't make it clear, but I was addressing the one or two people claiming that they enjoyed playing as Joel because he was violent and that if Ellie were violent as well, then they'd be OK with it.

A main female lead on a AAA game. Oh the comments will be delicious.

EDIT: People seem to be misinterpreting my post.

There will be lots of crying about the fact that its a female lead, is what I meant. I don't get it either, but there will.

Poor Lara Croft already forgotten.

They'd be told to go make their own game by people like Deckard and Teh-CJ.

To be fair that's in the context of the game play of the game. Where the brutality of survival was a key part of the game.

It would also be a huge divergence from Ellie's character if she didn't have brutality too as that was on display in spades in the first game

I don't recall ever hearing anyone disliking Joel, and then suddenly today I keep seeing comments like this popping up.

It's a load of crap, Joel is fantastic.

All I said is I don't like Ellie. I didn't like her in the first game, and I'll probably like her even less in the sequel. She just doesn't appeal to me.

It's not that she's a female because I don't mind a female protagonist, I just don't like her attitude, I don't like her character design and I don't like her sullen, angsty-teen demeanor. I also don't like her character aesthetically - it's just a personal preference. I don't like Cait Sith in Final Fantasy VII because he's just too saccharine-sweet, goofy and poorly designed for my taste. Everyone has taste and opinions, the fact that people are jumping down my throat because of mine is ridiculous. I'm not attacking anyone, all I said was that I was disappointed that we play as Ellie and not Joel.

He's one of the best characters I've ever seen in fiction and I adore him but he is fucking miles from "likable". Even pre-apocalypse he is clearly preoccupied and blunt.

Ellie is likable through and through.

To be fair
He only kills one surgeon after the guy attacked him.

(unless the player chooses to kill the rest)

Ehh it's pretty clear he kills the guy if you just walk into him. It's pure Joel to kill the guy, especially after what he just spent the last hour doing.

To be VERY clear that is not what you said:

I'm a 40 year-old male and the notion of playing as a teenage girl seems off-putting and not entertaining whatsoever to me.

Not Ellie the character, but any teenage girl. And you made sure to specify your age and sex.
