Sega/Deep Silver publishing Valkyria Revolution in Q2 2017 on PS4/XB1/Vita

How is PC so weird?

It's probably a wait and see. How much did the remaster sell on PC? Series started out as a console series, I think they may do a stagger release with Console and PC.

Or they may wait and see how sales are to justify a PC version.

I'm happy we are getting another game.

The port is sitting at 895,269 ± 24,735 on Steam. Needless to say, those numbers have no bearing on how this entry will sell.

In the West? I would find that very hard to believe.
Considering how badly the Xbone version of Final Fantasy 15 has sold versus the PS4 version, and knowing how incredibly loyal the Vita fanbase is to the format, I actually would not be surprised if the Vita version outsold the Xbone version in North America, and I would fully expect that to happen in Europe.

An Xbox version?!?!?!? Weird since this franchise was always a Playstation exclusive but hey whatever I'm not complaining.

Fun fact: the original was planned as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Though it was never mentioned why they switched to being a PS3 exclusive instead of making it multi-format.

Just watched a little bit of the 2.0 demo. Looks kind of janky and a little bit strange with the mix of guns and swords coming off of the previous games, but it looks like it could be somewhat fun if you aren't expecting too much out of it.

I've never played a Valkyria game before (Xbox owner) but I keep hearing good things about the franchise. Do I need to know anything plot-wise or am I good to start with this one?

You COULD start with this one, as it's a spinoff set in a different time (and presumably a different universe). It's probably not advisable, especially given the existence of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered on PS4. Play the game everyone already loves, instead of this oddity of unknown quality that is sorta kinda maybe related to the game everyone loves.

I would be OK with a Dynasty Warriors/Musou type of game, because those series of games are actually somewhat fun, if anything.

This is not even fun. It's just extremely low budget and without any sense of fun whatsoever. I don't really understand who this game is for. Valkyria fans will be extremely disappointed, whilst action RPG fans will be better served playing just about anything else in the genre.

Wait, are there actual impressions of final gameplay? I thought the game wasn't out in Japan yet.

Weren't they already localizing Miku games? I think it's not all good. We would've gotten some of these Sega games, but what this really does is cut off the third party titles Atlus USA used to bring over.

Yeah but Future Tone is a different beast. It was far from guaranteed.

There are enough other players (XSEED, Aksys, PQube) that I don't think third party game localizations are suffering. There aren't too many I can think of that we're not getting except for the Utawarerumono games, which ATLUS seems to be skipping for some reason

ok (after watching the demo), wasn't valkyria chronicles some kind of turn based shooter set in a WWII like world? What is this then?

Not Valkyria Chronicles

I have no real interest in this game (I want a proper sequel to VC), but for Segatlus USA to announce this for XBO and not PC is really a giant fuck you to all those people who support Valkyria Chronicles on PC. Maybe PC will get it later or something, but it's not really the same as a day and date release.
It's probably just a result of poor/non-existing communication between American and European branches.
This isn't much different from all the North America only announcements earlier this year, European announcements came way later (mostly through Deep Silver, and a few through SEGA Europe).
Since SEGA Europe is the one that handles PC releases, an announcement/release could still happen.

I hope this game ends up being good. It reminds me too much of what they did to Shining Force, but if it's good I won't care.

Did we get hard numbers (or a ratio) for the platform breakdown? I know Type-0 had a pretty bleak divide internationally.

Do you hold circle to win in this, too?

What happened to Shining Force is exactly why nobody should buy this and send a clear message to Sega. Don't condemn another franchise to shallow action RPG hell.

I mean, I totally want Valkyria 3 port to PS4 rather than Revolution but I take what they give anyway.

Also, is Deep Silver a good match for Valkyria Revolution?

Probably because the Playstation 3 was the platform selling the most in Japan. That era was the biggest in terms of "Japan makes decisions that only take Japan into account," which led to VC2 going to PSP and being super anime, when the entire rest of the world didn't want that.

I realise that. I just liked the world(s) and the art style as much as the combat in the previous games. It would be great if we got VC4 with proper turn-based combat, but strategy games seem out of favour on PS4/XBO, so if this is the only way to get some more of the mix of guns and magic blended into a fantastical take on wartime Europe, I'm OK with that. It looks like it's been done on a shoestring budget, so I'm cautious yet optimistic. If they've taken feedback on board it might be OK, always good to see new ideas.

I wish the game well and hope that it is good too but I can't shake the feeling that if it ain't broke then why fix it? If the game bombs then the chances of VC4 are virtually nil. Wouldn't it be better for the franchise to establish a foothold before spinning off into other genres? Not sure it's a good idea to put off your already slim fan base, whatever the idea.

I guess time will tell.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

That's true, but a bit weird. It's sort of like how Spike Chunsoft handles PC announcements and releases of their own games, except with poor communication between internal divisions of Sega instead.

Thanks for the correction guys on how the game did.

So this game is out in Japan and it's shit?

Or just he demo so far is shit?

I'd be more likely to give the game a try despite bad demos if it didnt have the Valkyria name. As it is it just feels like Sega is taunting me with the name of a dead franchise.

FFXV Split in the UK was 78:22 in favor of PS4. Don't think we have numbers for other regions yet (well, except for Japan where it was 99:1 to the surprise of nobody).

Like I get people's concern over how much it costs to port to xbox and how it may sell, but can't we just be happy for those who do just own an xbox that they get to play this?

It's on Sega/Deep Silver if they don't recoup the costs, just be happy for the gamers who get to play this.

Of what I played of this game at Tokyo Game Show made me not want to touch this game at all.

That being said I think it's pretty cool SEGA is now localising almost all of their major titles.

If this sells well we'll get more Valkyria Blue Revolution, not more Valkyria Chronicles. I'd rather have this franchise burn to the ground than see that happen. Buying VC1 on Steam and PS4 is the best message fans can send, after that we hope for the best.

That has nothing to do with it. Sega Europe just doesn't seem to publish much anymore.

No. That doesn't make sense, my friend. If SEGA Europe doesn't publish anymore then that means that SEGA Europe (SEGA) is lacking the budget to publish the game themselves. This is why DEEP Silver is involved, it's because they have the better fund and distribution that SEGA Europe is lacking. So yes, what I said before stands otherwise SEGA would have published the game themselves. After all, it's their game.

EDIT: If what you said is completely true then that means that SEGA has not learned anything since the Megadrive/Genesis days and still see themselves as three separate companies (Sega, Sega Europe, Sega America), the very mentality that caused the doom of their own products (Mega CD, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast).

Why? By buying the game the only message you'll send is that you want more shitty action rpgs.

That's not really how it works

SEGA Europe is so successful with PC games that publishing this basically isn't worth their time. They'd have more than enough money to do so.

SEGA lets their regional entities act independently, so SEGA Europe decided to say no. Even before, Koch Media, who own Deeps Silver, handled distribution of SEGA games. They just cut out the middle man.

That's exactly how it is, but this time it seems to work quite well

Yea it's fine for them to be happy and sega can do it if they want (and more games for everyone is always good). Just at this point if you are really interested in these games its best to just get a ps4 so your not always dissapointed in no xbone version.

Coming to the Xbox is a surprise. It will probably sell less copies then the amount of people that developed the game. =P

But good to have a date for the Western release all-around.

I kinda wonder if the no PC announcement is because of Deep Silver since Sega doesn't really need any help with a PC version. Sort of like how the 999 ports were announced just for the PS4 early in the day because the publisher didn't want to mention the self published Spike Chunsoft PC version.

Like if it were just PS4/Vita I'd think maybe just it's coming later in general (if it does) but announcing an XB1 version but no PC is odd.

Wow, Atlus (they are bringing this over, it would stay Japan exclusive if it is for Sega) is being awesome again, not forgetting the Vita version. Unlike some others, you know who.

I'm confident that Vita version will be top notch, as Media.Vision really know how to use the system.

There are two demos released and both are bad and nothing in the 2.0 demo makes me think the game has any potential.

Fair enough. I guess I'll need to change my "day 1 purchase" to a "release week purchase if the reception is not terrible" then.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll follow the game more closely now that I'll be able to play it.
