Super Mario Run Review Thread

MattKeil

BIGTIME TV MOGUL #2
I've been playing iOS games since I originally bought my iPhone 4 back in 2010. No, not every mobile game is shovelware, there's plenty of good, fun stuff on the app store. But exactly zero games i've played are comparable to this one.

You haven't been playing many games, then. They're not common but they do exist.

There are very good mobile games they are just very rare or just ps1/ps2 ports. It's kinda like the Wii lots of shovelware and mediocore games and a few good to fantastic games.

Really is it that bad? I thought what I saw on Jimmy fallon looked good?

I mean it's what you saw. If you like runners I'm sure you'll like it fine. I'm way over runners by now, I tried it to see if it would be much different or better than other ones I've played like Rayman and I liked it less than Rayman.

The is as less ridiculous than Nintendo just shutting down servers for their biggest mobile game on their biggest IP.

If...yeah if for some reason they kill the game and servers in the future they can indeed update the game to make it playable without a server connection.

Or at some point it does not sell enough anymore to justify keeping it updated, but they don't turn off the DRM in case they want to sell a new version of it later on.

I think it's really great. If you're just interested in finishing the levels it'll be a quick snooze of a game, but the challenge of finding all the hidden coins in each level, and of Toad Rally make it really enticing.

I genuinely don't understand the always online gripes for a smartphone game. Unless you're commute takes you through a deadzone or something, I don't see that as a concern for the overwhelming majority who will play this game.

Don't be "that guy".

F2P always online is fine. It is not when you pay for it. It is $15 in Australia by the way which is a lot.

- always online relies on the remote servers being on. This has nothing to do with your phone and is out of your control.
- games are not just played on phones with internet. Kids, and this is a kids game, ideally do not have internet on their devices a lot of the time.
- people do commute or travel. This isn't just a throw away concern.

You "don't understand?" I find that very hard to believe. Just say you don't care anyway.

I'm glad several reviews are calling them out on this.

I'd try this out if it wasn't for that always online requirement, but cool to know others enjoy it. Wonder how it'll do in the mobile community. that $10 pay wall could lead to some backlash.

The Wi-Fi I get at subway stops isn't good enough to run the game. Tried it on the way home. I can log in, load gifs and play vids on YouTube but Super Mario is like 'nah son'.

What a sh*tty experience. Can't think of a single other premium title that doesn't let you play offline.

Odd that it's not trending on any chart - which either means the target demographic are all at work and not prepared to waste 170 MB of their data plans yet, or this is underperforming like crazy.

It'll chart. Apple charts are slow for new titles. It'll most likely be #1 fairly soon.

Seems to be a massive disconnect between mainstream reviews and actual users playing the game.

Most posts online seem to aggregate to the game feeling really janky, bad controls, weird design decisions, server outages, DRM, and horrible performance on older iOS devices.

This has happened with Nintendo games in the past, where reviewers are seemingly paid off to go easy on them and give a near perfect review of the game. This happened most notably with Skyward Sword in 2011.

Guess it happened again.

Need receipts. I see a ton of posts online of people loving the game.

What year is it ? 2006 ?
Get serious. No one is getting paid to review a game.

Ooooorrrrrr it's a good game and most people are being dicks about the price. I've just paid for it. I played the first three levels over and over, getting the coins, having fun.

I haven't heard of anyone talking about this game ever, not even when it was announced at that Apple thing. I think it's just general apathy that's keeping people who it might appeal to from picking it up. Seemed like there was a bigger buzz for Miitomo.

Games free on the App Store at first, so you'd expect to see it charting regardless if it was doing well. It's certainly no Pokemon Go already. More people are playing Fun Run Arena- Multiplayer Race.

Not directly but indirectly. We've seen time and time again where review outlets are fearful of being cut off from all forms of marketing from a publisher.

No. That's not how it works, at all.

3.0

I played the demo and really liked it, planning on unlocking the full thing today. Have also seen good feedback which swayed my opinion as someone who is not a mobile gamer.

Oh please stop with this conspiracy bullshit. Yes, some outlets can be afraid of losing a supplier or support, I know because I've worked in the business, but Super Mario Run is a legit good game. Nobody have been paid off here, forced or anything like that, come on now.

It fucking JUST LAUNCHED like 2 HRS AGO. Most people are still at work. You, and others, are REALLY stretching trying to proclaim this game a failure, and even that all positive buzz is paid off. Why the extreme hatred? Cause it costs a few bucks? Wow.

The game is fantastic.
