The Switch sells out in minutes in Japan

I said the same thing. Where did anyone say it wouldn't be big in Japan, I'm legit curious? I feel like most of GAF thought it would be. Handhelds are bigger than consoles over there, PS4 has sold worse compared to PS3, while 3DS and VITA have sold very well.

Why the hell is this news OP?
Nah.

Clearly Artificial Scarcity.

Or it could be that Japan Likes Handhelds a lot.

it is going to sell out regardless if it is a shitty console or not.

This is Nintendo's first console in 4 years? plus I doubt Nintendo has enough stock to supply every country equally.

This is true, but a 29,980¥ handheld though?
I don't know, it seems like we need to wait a bit before we crown the Switch as the saviour of the Japanese gaming market.
Some people think the Switch will do 3DS numbers while others think it will perform like a traditional console (i.e. poor) but we don't know yet.

Not a surprise, but this thing should have huge legs over there. Nobody really cares about resolutions and power. The only reason there is a Splatoon 2 and it's not just a port is because of Japan. Hopefully, it will attract more Japanese 3rd parties to the platform.

It didn't sell out in minutes though. You can still pre-order one at some places. :p

Any of those places online? I really want to get a pre-order for my bother. If you know a place, please post a link. If it's a physical store itself taking pre-orders can you tall me where. I have friends in Osaka, Gifu, Nagoya, Kyushu and Tokyo. Maybe I can call in a favor. Thanks!

Splatoon is big, not that big, there are already bigger franchises on 3DS.
Splatoon is going to be massive on a handheld. It's quite large on the Wii U. It's going to blow up. There's a reason it was the first established franchise they showed during the Switch Presentation.

"Many gamers in Japan have been left without a pre-order for a launch day Nintendo Switch, which has caused the reselling market in Japan to explode with resellers in Japan already selling the console on Amazon for double the price of the retail price."

Good news for me then.

Toys R Us were still taking pre-orders at the time of my post. Try them.

That doesn't mean it's going to "Blow up" enough for people to buy a $300 console.

Ueno Yodobashi Camera (Tokyo) was still taking them when I was there 30 mins ago. Don't know if going now would be too late though.

Thanks guys! I'll see if I can convince any of my friends to check it out during lunch. Do the pre-orders need to be picked up at the store they are made or can they ship?

Yodobashi Camera still has units, and Nintendo Store pre-orders are going live on Monday, so not entirely sold out.

I got two systems pre-ordered on Amazon pretty easily.

we'll certainly see

I think Splatoon will be a huge title in japan for the Switch selling well throughout the console's life. even if it's early sales are just "normal" good it'll have a long tail.

I mean, it sold like 1.4 million on the Wii U and the Wii U was the Wii U

I think it was in the top 10 every week for almost a full calendar year and like I said, Wii U

it's got serious potential on Switch

No..it doesn't.

it kind of is though

Splatoon

On a Handheld

In Japan

That's really all that needs to be said.

I very rarely see handhelds, everything is on phones these days. When I do see a handheld, it's often a DS Lite or PSP.

And as someone who has to ride the subway at rush hour every day, good luck not getting your Switch crushed in the chaos.

Oh god someone actually made a thread about this article....

I am very curious how NextGenGaming got this information. I doubt they have someone in Japan or someone speaking Japanese in their team. They don't mention any news source at all.

"People who waited outside stores all night, didn’t have too much luck either with the console selling their complete stock allocation in just 15 minutes"

(Citation needed)

I seriously doubt there were lots of people waiting outside all night because it's too freaking cold, and secondly, what store? How big was the stock allocation? How do they know it was gone within 15 minutes and people couldn't get a pre-order? This article is sketching some insane scenarios.

Now, if I go on twitter right now and search for Switch 予約 I still see multiple tweets popping up every minute of people saying they pre-ordered the Switch just fine. And for example this one: "Pre-ordered Switch at Geo. It was gone within seconds online, but seems to be still readily available at brick and mortar stores", or "Pre-ordered Switch, it was easier than I thought!", "Managed to pre-order Switch online normally at Yodabashi", "Seems like Switch is still readily available at retail" and lots more.

Going by my own (anecdotal) experience: I thought it was gonna be pretty bad because Geo only got like 20 units per store (10 of each color). I was there at 7 AM with a friend and the store would open at 10 AM. In those three hours, a total of 7 people lined up. After we got it, they just put the pre-order slips on a table in the store so people can just walk in and pre-order it. This was in Mitaka, Tokyo.

Yes, the Switch was gone in seconds at amazon but that seems to be always be the case. I hear it's still available to pre-order at Yodabashi, just the site seems to be broken.

Tldr: This article is highly speculative and probably based on nothing but a few tweets about the line at Yodobashi Akiba. I'm sure they're glad their clickbait story worked and someone linked it here, though! Of course pre-orders will sell out, but that doesn't say anything. In reality, I see more Japanese people being surprised there isn't more demand for the Switch instead of the opposite, as is implied in this story.

Splatoon 2 is going to lay down a very healthy first-year base for the Switch in Japan for sure. Given the game's popularity there and the preference for handheld gaming in that region, folks are going to see a LOT of gamers playing a Switch in public. And it will catch on.

Japan might be the Switch's only given, tbh.

THANK YOU for posting this! This website has no idea. Their news is completely false. People in Japan get out there and pre-order!

Is this correct? I feel like this should be taken into account then, if you have on the ground experience.

I feel like preorders are obviously going to sell out, but stories like this dont make much sense

Preorders selling out mean nothing, not selling out would be a headline since limited supply plus Nintendo has a built in audience that will buy anything day 0. Plus this is Japan come on they are hardly an indicator on how it'll sell for the world beyond launch period.

It's correct. I live in Japan too, I can confirm this site has absolutely no idea what they are saying.

Even Yodobashi online are still selling the Switch.
