The Switch sells out in minutes in Japan

Splatoon is big, not that big, there are already bigger franchises on 3DS.

A new IP that sold 1.5 million in Japan, a feat unmatched since Wii Play on consoles. On the floundering system that was the WiiU.

Yeah no Splatoon was being held back by the console. Imagine the game on a handheld.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Didn't an important political figure in Japan dress up as Mario at a public event recently? (or am I thinking of something else)

If so, Nintendo already won.

It's correct. I live in Japan too, I can confirm this site has absolutely no idea what they are saying.

Even Yodobashi online are still selling the Switch.

You can't order anything from Yodobashi, their website is crippled from traffic. I have a friend who's been trying and she's failing there, she's just going to go to the local and see if there's any left.

I think it was the Prime Minister or whoever is holds the highest position in Japan dressed as Mario at the Olympics for the change over to Japan for 2020.

Yes, their website is borked, but they are selling it. I almost managed to complete an order for it, it works eventually.

Imagine if Monster Hunter XX was a launch title

imagine

That plus Splatoon plus Pokémon Stars.

Nintendo would've taken over the world.

Your referring to the Olympics? It was apart of the game ceremony.

Thanks for clarification.

This would be great and I don't think there's a person on this forum that wouldn't love it, unless there are Nintendo reps here.

Yeah I could see splatoon 2 selling 2+ million on switch in Japan alone easily

I'm puzzled why anyone thought the Switch, a handheld, would not sell well in Japan, a land dominated by handhelds and the only place where even the Vita could find some modicum of success.

It feels like a lot of people here want the Switch to fail. You can say that this doesn't indicate whether or not there will be long term success for the system without being smug and snarky about it. I don't understand the mentality of people like that.

Mario literally invited the world to Japan in 4 years aT the closing of the Rio Olympics along with the Japanese Prime Minister.

After reading most GAF'ers comments I thought this thing was going to struggle to sell one unit. Glad Nintendo are off to a good start in both Japan and the USA - things are looking up for the new Nintendo home console.

Cheesemeister on Twitter also spotted 130+ people queued up at Yodobashi Kyoto.

Did gaf misjudge Japan's taste? Or was it always obviously going to be big in Japan anyway? Is it that some of the harsh response from places like Gaf is due to the fact that Nintendo is a Japan first country whereas Sony is more globalised as a company?
You are making lots of assumptions here, first of all it would be weird as hell for the Switch to NOT sell at launch, its a new Nintendo system after all, that you can take everywhere.

But ask this question 3 months from now.

Lots of people on gaf view it as a home console. Guess in Japan people view it as a handheld (correct imo)

It's both really. I mean there going to games that are consider console games and other that are more traditionally handheld franchises and they are going to share space on a machine.

Yeah Switch seems tailormade for Nintendo to fight for their life over the portable market. Who knows how that will play out long term though. Splatoon 2 certainly helps.

Eh, to me it's not about the type of games, price,or how Nintendo markets it but solely where the hardware is. And it's all in the tablet part and you can take it with you so that's what it is to me.

Your being overdramatic. Everyone is saying the same things. Their tone doesnt matter. They are criticizing the OP for making a thread based on what is supposedly an unreliable site and then trying to extrapolate that to long term Switch success

Yes! That's what it was thank you.

If it didn't sell out, would it still mean the same thing?

No it would mean actual panic time for the company. Selling through the initial shipment is normal and expected. If you have consoles sitting on shelves day one you have goofed up hard as hell.

This is why preordering consoles to resell is basically writing yourself a check for free money

That's why i'm basically just pointing out that this is necessary news with regards to the narrative of the sales of the system at this point in time.

My comment was more directed at the "did Gaf misjudge Japanese tastes?" like this means something. It means Nintendo launched a new console and that's it.

To everyone saying the Wii U did this too... Do you have a source for that? I remember it being very easy to find both in Japan and NA.

Not that the Switch has actually sold out in Japan, since this is a terrible article from an unknown site with poor sourcing. But still, this seems to be performing better than the Wii U in the same time frame.

Which should've been obvious because this is a handheld in Japan despite what Nintendo is marketing it as to the west.
