La La Land will do well. I don't think it needs to win double digit oscars though. Costume design? Really? Seems like there would be dozens of movies with more interesting costume design than La La Land.

It's one of those movies that gets the snowball momentum, especially after the Globes. It's a fine movie but I'm never going to consider it one of the greatest movies of all time. Let's not go nuts and give it everything.

Elle can't even get a foreign language nom? I like it more than La La Land. It might be my favorite Paul Verhoeven movie.

Hidden Figures is the best movie nobody saw.

In people's eyes it's just another boring movie about America and space flight with an extra ding cause it stars a bunch of black women though. So nobody is gonna care.

Isn't it at the top of the box office of 2017 films so far? (Split will probably overtake it by next week though)

It didn't even make the shortlist this year. A lot of speculation as to why centers on Sony Pictures Classics deciding to put their chips on Toni Erdman, as they distributed both films in the US.

This was my opinion after seeing the trailer, I still might see it soon though.

It's been doing pretty well at the box office.

I will admit, without knowing anything about it and looking at the thumbnail sized poster, I thought this was a young adult fantasy movie.

I didn't get to see it yet but I listened to the soundtrack already cuz I think Levi was such a boss with her under the skin soundtrack.

I don't think it's as good as her work on Under the Skin, but it is used rather effectively in the film itself. I'm just glad to see her get more mainstream recognition.

Looks like this is only the 3rd time since 2001* that a Pixar film wasn't nominated for Best Animated Feature.

*holy shit that was the first year this award was given?

Mel Gibson and Casey Affleck have no business being nominated for anything, I don't care how talented they are. Anti-semites and womanizers should be publicly shamed not nominated for prestigious awards.

That's factually untrue to the extreme. Hidden Figures is the third highest grossing film with a Best Picture nod, and will likely beat out Arrival. Depending on how awards season influences grosses, it may surpass and stay ahead of La La Land, too.

Hidden Figures will be past Arrival domestically by this Sunday at the latest.

Arrival was a well shot movie, but has my least favorite sci-fi concept of all time in it non-linear time. I really hope it doesn't win much. Also, I hate musicals. My tastes really don't line up with most people's this year.

I don't mind the movie. It have Michael Crichton-level concept (in order words, not even a high concept, but a mid-tier concept.) But after watching this director's previous movie, Enemy, my opinion of The Arrival has lower. This guy only does non-linear timelines?

I only said "likely" in case Arrival gets another push in theaters. If not, Hidden Figures beats it without breaking a sweat.

It's gonna clear 100mil domestic.

Moonlight's got 15.

It's going to be pretty close to $100M by the end of this weekend, if not past that mark.

It's only $8M behind Sully, coming off a larger third weekend. Sully ended up with $125M.

I expect Hidden Figures to end up with at least that.

I don't think a push for Arrival even matters at this point. Maybe for getting the film past $100M.

EDIT: Gravity made another $20M after the Academy Award nominations, and it went on to win 7, including best director. Arrival might win 2-3 technical awards.

Peter O'Toole fucked over a 1000 women.

Marlon Brando raped an actress during a scene.

Sean Penn beat up, tied up and raped Madonna.

Harrison Ford. Cheated on his wife with a 19 year old Carrie Fisher.

Ben Affleck and Jude Law cheated on their wives with their babysitters. So did Tom Brady seeing as how she was on his private jet wearing his super bowl rings. Should we not give Brady anymore MVP awards?

Stop worrying about stuff like this. Hollywood is full of degenerates, drug addicts, and people who sleep with hundreds of people. both men and women. If you dont like the industry, feel free to stop watching movies and paying them to live that lifestyle.

Prisoners and Sicario are linear.

No, don't stop worrying.

Acknowledging and not forgiving those actions can exist alongside appreciating the art. If we're going to put money down towards people with rap sheets then we should allow ourselves to feel a little uncomfortable. I'm not saying it's morally wrong, but I am saying to let the discomfort be part of the territory. And if it's too much discomfort, then don't go see the movie.

To really hammer my point here: the ickiness that you should feel for supporting reprehensible people is just as legitimate as enjoying their art. We can do both at once. I'm of the opinion that we should do both at once.

La La Land had vivid, stylized costume design that was vital to the movie's look. Of all the tech nominations to quibble with, that's an odd one.

Man imma be pissy if La La Land wins double digit awards. Or best film. It was really good, but not Worldbeater levels of great

edit : or maybe I dont undestand your post ? Enemy timeline is linear, but the movie's narrative isnt.

My initial opinion from the trailer is that it looks like a mediocre Speilbergy movie. I've heard it's actually quite good though, and now seeing it nom'd for best picture, I guess I'll watch it.

I'm rooting for La La Land to sweep.

Mostly because it's only 11:30am and I've already seen a few "think pieces" about how it shouldn't win as bloggers passing themselves off as film analysts and critics type in furious desperation to be "edgy" and get clicks for their websites.

How in the fuck can Manchester by the Sea not get an editing nomination????

I see Silence was robbed.

SMH at the animated category. Kubo should win but it won't.

You should be thumbs upping the animated category. That's a category that used to nominate stuff like Surf's Up and Bolt. Now the big blockbuster animated titles typically take up 1-2 slots, and some smaller stuff is recognized.

Of course they will still give the prize to Disney in the end.
