DUDE. Devs could already do this. Boost Mode has no effect on Pro Modes whatsoever.

No, shut up, you're about to retort -- listen to me: BOOST MODE MEANS NOTHING DIFFERENT FOR DEVELOPERS. It only affects old games that don't have Pro patches.

Developers cannot opt out of making a Pro patch in new games. And if they were already going to do the bare minimum in enabling Pro mode, they were already going to do the bare minimum.

Repeat after me: Boost Mode only affects old games without Pro patches.

Seriously, -VipeR. You're embarassing yourself.
Pretty much. It really isn't that hard to understand.
This changes nothing for new games coming out.

Hopefully, but from a business perspective it should happen, unless a game is not selling well and devs want to show off.

Define this PRO MODE.

Which is exactly why it could be bad news, now devs do not have to increase the visual assets of the game, just have the same 1080p game with its unlocked 30fps/60 fps cap run at a steadier pace thanks to the "Boost Mode" , and call it a day. And a "Pro mode"

I hope you guys get my point, which is not to jump on the bandwagon. Lets EXPECT future games to take full Advantage of the PRO visually And by uncapping the 30fps if its possible (Real PRO mode). NOT JUST have it 1080p and have the system take care of steadier fps (2-3boost)
.

You have no idea what you're talking about lol, this is 100% retroactive. It won't work on future PS4 games, besides maybe PSN games.

How is this great news.
You guys are delusional.
This is mehh at best.
YAY 3 extra fps to replay bloodborne and witcher 3. Get a grip.

If anything this could become bad news. Now for new games, developers can take the easy way out and opt out from making a REAL PRO version with significantly higher IQ, , and just have the system run the game at a steadier fps, with some minor better loading.

I'm pretty sure he quotes himself to purely get under people's skin, like metfant and his ilk. It seems to personally draw out the asshole in some people whenever he does that. You also come off as an asshole with that snide comment about onQ.

The difference is, I don't mind that. I'm not worried about what people on a massive, anonymous game forum think about me. I have no need to promote my "image." It doesn't matter.

The need to post about how "right" you are ("I told you so") comes across as petty and egotistical to me. It's also counterproductive, because when you go out of your way to try to prove to me that you are X or Y, I can usually assume you are not, or at least that you are insecure about it (otherwise, why the effort).

Nice!
I was massively disappointed when at first the pro didn't improve performance of most games just by being more powerful. Even the XboxOneS with its slightly better power gave some games slightly better performance.
With this and external hdd support, i will probably get a pro during the holidays, well im waiting on the scorpio reveal too.

This is what mark cerny said. He never even hint about boost mode. He said their priority was making sure every games works day one. Was it possible that they would release a boost mode? Sure, lots of people were asking for a toggle to allow it but it kinda phizzled out after a few months.

Read what i wrote again, i said onQ is very clear with his statements. You insinuated that he was being vague. There is literally nothing in my statement that mentions Scorpio or Pro being more powerful. Thats the thing that irks me with you, onQ says one thing and you all make up a version of it that he never even said and proceed to chastise and hector him over it with personal snide comments. Put the dude on ignore if you don't care about what he has to say or don't like him. At this point you appear to be obsessed with him, it is very unbecoming.

Sigh...

Ok, so Cerny is referring to the Pro improving older PS4 games without a patch...Obviously he doesn't call it boost mode...But he is talking about that in comparison to how MS allowed the Xbone S to improve some games right out of the box...

As for onq...As for being vague..It's because he made a prediction with a qualifier to cover his ass...You can't say "Sony MIGHT..." and then go claim you're Nostradamus when they do..because you covered your ass by saying they MIGHT do it...So if they never did it, you pretend that you were just speculating...

As for the Scorpio/Pro power topic...This is the problem...YOU didn't mention it, but that was one of his "predictions" he came out and stated that he thought the Pro would have a second GPU...And he also said Scorpio MIGHT only be 6tf fp16...

You can't have your cake and eat it too..

"Sony MIGHT allow old games to use the full Pro hardware later on"

Sony does it..

"I'm a genius!!"

"Scorpio MIGHT be a 6tf fp16 GPU"

Turns out to be completely false...

And your use of caps and bold isn't helping your case.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread - many/most PS2 classics were patched last year after Pro launched. Couldn't see any resolution changes in those I tried though.
Yeah, but this is kind of an automatic thing now, SONY could have improved the emulator, no ?????

I've heard that Assassins Creed Unity install off disc (no patches) runs with an unlocked framerate. You'd have to play the game offline, but curious how that would run.
Well, that game's rez is 900p, so I imagine the framerate would be close to 60fps if that were the case, wont be locked though. Dying Light, also had an unlocked framerate at some point..

Has anyone made a dedicated thread about broken games (SOMA, RE:RE2)? A whitelist/blacklist would be useful for Pro folks...
Well, pretty much all the badly coded games we expect to have issues, but I suspect that list may not be too large. RER2 was definitely a head scratcher on PS4, so it's not surprising that it crashes. Hell, that game should run locked 60fps with 16xAF on OG PS4.

Soma's framerate surprised me at launch, because the devs spoke so much of the PS4 port, so another game which was not ported well in the end....

What I want now is for some devs to unlock their games framerate at least, if doing a pro patch is too much.....

I'm sure it's coming later on but i can't wait for an os level checkerboard implementation for all the games. 1440p,1800p-4k CB. Just like this update, let users pick what they want best.
Well, I'd like that for PS2/PS3 classics, I think that's doable in the emulator.......

I'd also like to see such a thing on an OS level, for prior-pro PS4 games, but it may not be that easy to do...but yes, I would like it to happen.....Ideally, a checkerboard tickbox 1800p or 2160p (you choose) with TAA and 16xAF as standard would be a pretty spiffy implementation. The other option would be Locked 30 or Unlocked framerate (current TV's locks you at 60fps if you have the GPU power to run locked 60).....Hey, an OS level frame counter would be swell whilst they're at it too, but I think that's something we can expect on PS5, perhaps not PS4.PRO....though not impossible...

That would never happen. You're not going to change how games are rendered at an OS level.
Never say never, it's possible, somethings would have to change, but yes, it's likely not happening this generation, perhaps PS4 BC on PS5 then....

Before I start...AWESOME! and you're doing the Lord's work compiling this list and videos! Thank you!

Not calling any of this into question, because there is no reason for these games NOT to improve..but as I don't have time to look at all the videos right now...How many claims of improvement are backed up by any actual numbers/testing? Or are they just people using they old eyeball test?

I only ask because when the news first broke of boost mode you had people in the same thread saying "Bloodborne shows no improvement" and a few posts later "Bloodborne is definitely improved"

Most people's eyeballs see what they want to see and are nowhere near as accurate as they think they are...

Also make a new thread for that it's great work.

The only game which has actual framerate numbers from testing is Rainbow 6 Siege, because there's an FPS counter built into the UI. None of the other videos have been run through an analysis tool.

That said, the sheer fact of improvement in many videos is very obvious to the eyeball test, even if there's not a number attached. In other videos, it's more equivocal. And of course, most of the games don't have videos posted at all. As I said, all those should be taken very cautiously.

Good points. It seems like a rather sad attempt to bolster his image and credibility on the forum -- which I guess took a beating, or else he wouldn't have to go to these lengths to try to restore them. He seems rather desperate for other people to recognize how smart and prescient he is. That kind of thing (trying to convince people you're smart) usually backfires. If you're trying that hard to convince people you're brilliant, they are going to wonder why.
Takes childish and just outright mean to another level.

You are the only one in this entire thread who feels Boost Mode is somehow a bad thing.

Take a step back and reflect on that for a moment.

Arguing the semantics of 'might' or 'will' in a statement is kinda silly too tho.

I remember arguing pretty hard on GAF that a gpu boost and upclocked CPU would possibly increase frame rates significantly at 1080p, but the consesus was that no, no way framerates would be increased even at 1080p because bottlenecks. Well games going from 30 fps to 110fps seems pretty significant no?

But I'm not going to quote myself cause I think that's silly and doesn't prove anything honestly.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
This boost mode is a good way to utilize the extra hardware Pro affords, but i hope people dont go into PS5 thinking its going to treat any hypothetical PS5 oriented games in this manner(not counting PS4 or Pro oriented games via BC). If you want fine grain options, PC is always the answer as opposed to over complicating the console experience.

I'd have preferred Pro not exist period, but if its here, might as well do right by purchasers. Still not interested myself

but there is no real financial incentive for say Guerilla to go back and patch KZ:Shadowfall...Do you think taking the time to dedicate somebody's time (and therefore salary) to patching that game would create enough sales of the game at this point to make it financially worth it? I don't...

This is Sony just allowing the Pro to act more like a PC...When you swap in a new video card, and overclock your CPU older games will run better (generally speaking) even though nobody is going back and reoptimizing for your new hardware...

Basically what you're seeing here is the Pro just brute forcing improvements in performance using regular PS4 code...

If there is anything in the game that is dependant on CPU or GPU load, you will see improvements...

Things like: the game should hold higher resolution more often in games that use dynamic res...Frame rates should generally be better, any effects that scale based on load will improve..rushy mentioned in driveclub they dynamically scale motion blur based on GPU load, so you will get better motion blur more often...

In theory, Sony could add a system level resolution selection and you could probably force some games to render at higher resolutions..But you would probably be asking for more bugs here

Hmm, I mean, my post is in response to the whole "oh no! not boost mode! we won't get Pro patches now!"

Screw it. There was never any real financial benefit for individual devs to go back and patch these games anyway. We only got as many as we did closer to release because it was expected, now people are looking forward.

This is the best solution to bring benefits to past games. I don't really think something like increasing the render target/increasing resolution is at all necessary let alone worth working into.

If you're an individual and that's what you want, seriously, just get a PC. I'm more than happy with games simply meeting their render.framerate targets.

People are just continuing to hate because they shat on people wanting more from the Pro in the beginning.

Did a quick test for Street Fighter V loading times.

Launching the game to SFV Logo screen:
Normal: 42.3 s
Boost: 35.6 s

Main Menu to Stage Select (for Versus):
Normal: 20.2 s
Boost: 14.4 s

Character Select to Match in Hillside Plaza (Ryu and Ken selected):
Normal: 20.7 s
Boost: 17.3 s

Nice .
Still this damn game should get a Pro patch .
It suppose to be the only SF for this gen with yearly support .
Guess Capcom being half ass with it like usual .

Can someone please test Handsome Jack Collection with FOV set to max and give impressions of the difference? It gets a bit choppy on OG PS4 when FOV is set high.

Howdy, thought everyone might like a summary for this long thread. Here's all the impressions posted here, along with some video links. As with all individual impressions, keep in mind that people have differing views of what constitutes a framerate improvement, and sometimes are wrong that there is one at all. (This is especially true since a very large portion of the below impressions come from one user.)

I tried out some fighting games and damn...DOA and SFV especially look a lot more crisp and SMOOTH Battlefront is noticeably improved too.
Nice, Capcom is taking it's sweet time with pro-patching SFV, but this sounds good. DOA5 should be native 4k at 60fps on the pro with TAA, if not 2160p checkerboarded with TAA and 16xAF. It's based on a PS3/360 game, but I guess we will take these enhancements in the meantime..

Man these consoles are really CPU bound. Such a big improvement with the Pro
Do I sound some sarcasm in this post?........I was also told we would only get an uptick of 2-3 frames with boost. I think some will shudder when they see real tests, especially on unlocked framerate games, (it's also a reason why I always favored unlocked games). Shadowfall, TRDE and so many more will be eyeopeners. I hope some devs at least uncap their games at the minimum.......

Dude. They have to enable the full use of all the CPU and GPU cores at their Pro clock when running in Pro mode.

Which is exactly what Boost Mode does.
Enabling full use of your hardware is not using your hardware fully, they're not exactly synonymous, especially not in every pro patch scenario.

- This only works with pre-Pro games. Games released after the Pro must have a Pro mode as per Sony. So no, developers can not take the easy way out.

- If you think it's only "3 extra fps" you clearly haven't watched some of the videos like FFXIV on boost mode. Some are small improvements, other games are larger improvements.

You didn't do your research on the topic before commenting.
