Switch - Koizumi confirms Bluetooth headsets - wired 3.5mm jack works while docked

A specifically Nintendo branded one I mean. Given the accessories they already have lined up, I wouldn't be shocked to see it.

If it will happen, I can see something Hori related.

There are? Any link (Amazon, etc.) Might need to look into it, in case headset cable isn't long enough (it should be, but better safe than sorry).

There are these kinds, but this one is a bit bulky and requires to plugged to an AC power outlet. Probably because it can drive loudspeakers

There are smaller ones like this too:

The Pro Controller should have had a minijack output. Would have been a great feature.

Oh well... It's good to hear the output still works while docked anyway.

How do i hear both ingame sounds and voice chat? Dont tell me "game audio through speakers", cause 1. The quality is crap 2. If im voice chatting I have plugs or headphones so that will further muffle game sound.

This was a concern for me, I play on a desk with a 27", exclusivey with headphones, and needed the Switch to support them while docked. Great news!

Nintendo being Nintendo I would expect them to release a new pro controller 6 months from now with a built in 3.5mm jack.

Okay. I guess I was really confused because I never entertained the thought that it might not have been possible to just plug in a headset and use it as headphones regardless of the status of the Switch. That's something I consider a basic expected functionality in any media device.
Doesn't only one current gen console support bluetooth headsets...?

Finally some details on this. I do hope he means full audio can be done through Bluetooth at all times though...

Wii U was specifically a mess on this front. I was just dumbfounded there was no solution to have headphones on in any fashion for certain games like Windwaker HD and Tokyo Mirage Sessions (both have menu audio on the gamepad). It didn't even support USB headsets.

Back to the Switch, the fact it comes out through a translated interview is super poor. I also would've much prefer a jack on the controller, that is a god tier feature on PS4 Xbone (later models)

And as always... Why isn't this on the site? Why isn't this on the site? Why isn't this on the site?

Months before release: Nintendo will surely do another direct to clear up all the confusions before launch!

Days before release: we will soon see the machine anyway so who cares about missing information.

To listen to the game audio?
If the game audio isn't also routed through the app somehow, then it'll confirm that the app is the most baffling choice ever made in relation to the creation of an online service.

I blame HD rumble...

A headphone jack is a practical feature on a controller. It should be there on the "Pro" controller at this point.

What am I missing here? I sure as hell don't have or want a 3.5mm cord long enough to go from my couch to the switch dock?

I wondered why anyone would even care for this feature because of exactly this. Official 8ft mtf 3.5mm aux cord to be announced at the pre launch direct.

I don't understand why so many people here love cords so much. I would be super annoyed having my controller connected to my ear. Makes much more sense to use Bluetooth.

Yay, both options will be pretty handy to me, especially the bluetooth support for when I am outisde. I have gotten really, really used to using my bluetooth headphones on my phone. About the dock thing, I do have a set of speakers and its amp or whatever it's called does support headphones but the minijack connector is starting to not work very well, so yep, will probably use that.

This may shock you but
Some people play on a PC monitor, in their room, on a chair

That means they would have the switch near to them

Incredible I know, I discovered this amazing fact today

I've got two pairs of LG Tone headphones, glad to hear that I can use them with the Switch.

Since I switced to Bluetooth headphones, I've had a hard time going back to wired headphones.

when has there been a precedent for that? pro controller on wii u didnt?

Never as far as controllers go, but with Nintendo's business strategy with the 3DS to New 3DS I wouldn't be surprised if that were to happen, either way I don't care, I'm just super hyped to finally get my hands on my own Switch come March 3rd.

While great news, would it reallyhave killed them putting a headphone jack into the Pro Controller? It's already jam-packed with new features, might as well add it. Such a strange omission.

That's a relief, I was very surprised when my PS4 refused to pair with my Bose QuietComfort 35. I just assumed it would because my Vita did.

I just hope the audio delay isn't very noticeable, great as these headphones are they don't support AptX. At least if push comes to shove I can just run a long extension 3'5" cord from the Switch.

It's not just adding a headphone jack. It's also adding another Bluetooth device and DAC in there. I'm not sure if paying more than $70 for that would be a good idea.

Funny you say "Nintendo being Nintendo", while Microsoft was the one who released a new XBO controller with bluetooth and 3.5mm headphone jack built-in. Nintendo never released a new updated controller to add some features. And no, a console/handheld revision is something completely different, because everyone is doing that.

It's kinda ironic that the only console that my Sony MDR-100ABN's will work with over bluetooth is the switch.

well it is a portable console, so perhaps more likely they'd support BT headphones than the home consoles like PS4 and XB1. And PS4 has a 3.5mm socket right by your hands so it isn't quite such an issue using wired headphones.

I wonder if plugging in headphones will automatically cut the audio to your TV?

But now Nintendo is learning to copy the competition for the first time ever. Region-free console, paid online multiplayer service, no backward compatibility. Some good practices, some bad practices. Maybe incremental controller upgrade is next!

Huh?! The PS3 had no problems with third party BT headsets.

Doesn't the Pro Controller already use Bluetooth anyway? Shouldn't it be able to just use that connection for a audio stream also? And don't 3.5mm DACs cost like pennies?

Bluetooth receiver for the controller i/o and Bluetooth receiver for audio are two separate devices on a controller. That's how other controllers implement audio to controllers, like in DS4.

headphine jack when docked? I don't see recall seeing headphone jack on any controller but the switch console itself

That's good to hear. Granted, it would have been nice if at least the Pro Controller had a headphone jack, but whatever.

Really? Guess you learn something new everyday.

The Pro controller has a USB-C socket, so I supposed you could theoretically use an adapter for a 3.5mm jack?

Don't get your hopes up.

I'd be willing to bet that the USB-C port on the controller is only for charging. Maybe it'll also work for the controller inputs when plugged in, so it can act as a wired controller instead of a wireless controller.

I just wouldn't expect to get audio out of that USB-C port on the controller.

So do you need to listen to another set of headphones for the party chat audio coming out of your phone or do they somehow send both party chat and game audio to your headphones using Nintendo magic. So not only do you need 4 arms you also need 2 sets of ears if you require the use of headphones without making a bunch of noise.

I think it's already been covered but just in case.

Bluetooth is now a somewhat acceptable standard for listening to audio (with a bit of lag).

In 2-way mode with a mic, it's still absolutely godawful. Mono, and pretty much 'telephone call quality'. You aren't going to want to listen to game audio on it while chatting.

PS4 (and I assume Xbox) don't use BT audio profiles, they use 3.5mm into the controller, then send/receive as data from controller to console. Wireless headsets specific to the consoles use propriety wireless dongles and not BT at all.

But if you are Nintendo and are creating a console that can be docked or undocked and have god knows how many weird controller combinations including single joycon, I can understand if they've just segmented chat audio out to a phone app. KISS principle in action, rather than add 3.5mm jacks to every controller part.

Becomes baffled, curling up into a ball when confronted with three controller options.
I'm so confused by this. Simple question, in order to use headphones while docked I have to plug my headphones into my dock and then have a long enough cord to sit on my couch or a Bluetooth cord?

Is there no way to plug the headphones into the switch controller?

I sure as hell hope so.

Nice, hopefully that means I could use Bluetooth speakers in tabletop mode... Would be nice to have those while using the system during a party like setting without a tv.
