Nintendo has a hard fight ahead in the U.K. Good luck to them.

Nintendo has been shadowboxing for 3-4 generations now. As long as they get 4-5 quality 1st party games out per year the system will survive merely off of existing Nintendo fans.

Blame Wii U and not the market because like UK everybody else didn't buy it... if Nintendo makes a console that the market wants to buy (like Wii) then it will sell great.
Wii was different, lightning in a bottle. Nintendo did great: rifht product at the right time with the right software. See below though:
People are correct about the UK never really being big on Nintendo, despite the Wii's popularity. I don't know where some are getting the idea that Nintendo was popular in the 80s and 90s.

The NES wasn't really thing in the UK thanks to personal computers dominating the market in the 80s, the Mega Drive was more popular than the SNES and the Playstation was generally more popular than the N64.
Nintendo home consoles outside Wii were never that strong here. And 3DS wasn't so hot over here, so even the portable side is declining in the UK.

Good numbers considering the situation in which this was released

honestly, there could be more sales but the release was lacking a lot of things

So, good numbers considering the device

Good for Nintendo :)

The Wii and DS did pretty well, but I doubt many of the folk that bought a DS or Wii U but no other Nintendo consoles are turning up to buy a Switch day one.

You've just solved it, genius! All this talk about whether it's a handheld or a home console.

Home console releases from 8th gen:

- Wii U - November
- XB1 - November
- PS4 - November

Handheld console releases from 8th gen:

- Vita - February
- 3DS - March

Therefore, it's a handheld due to the month it released in!

Brilliant, Primasaurus. And therefore, we know what sales comparisons to make too :p

They said that once and then changed the narrative closer to launch.

That's still their narrative and they've said it quite a few times. That's why they continued to mention the 3DS and it's lifespan after the switch launch. Hell FE warriors has a 3DS port as well as the 3DS exclusive game.

Hm...good numbers look different but I guess it is okay for a Nintendo console. The question is: how many units had been shipped to the UK? If they had 2 million in stock then 80000 is low if they sold every unit they had then it is good.

I definitely think the numbers for weeks 2-10 will be far more important than week 1. This tells me nothing except Switch sold 80k in week 1. :D

Wasn't there a rumor that folllow up shipments for march will be low? I think it was Blunty who said there wont be another major restock till April.

Decent numbers, expecting it to drop massively due to no big games for some time.

Seems like there's hunger for the machine so that drop will not happen immediately. Perhaps over Summer

Hopefully the triple whammy of Mario Kart 8, ARMS and Splatoon 2 will mean the system can sell decently over summer, but then do games consoles sell well over summer typically?

Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon will probably sell its fair share. But ARMS? Are people expecting big things for it? Geniune question here.

Depends on when those games release. If it's Mario Kart April, Arms in May, and Splatoon in June then it will be good.

If it's Mario Kart in April, Arms in June, and Splatoon in August it will be a tough next few months

don't forget the £100 price cut less than three months later! *laughs*

Dude, dont joke about that... That still burns real bad!

Seeing that advert for £150 after I had made my parents buy it me on release day... It really is part of the reason im holding out on getting a switch, even though I want one real bad / the wife has said I can get one.

Definitely, they need to keep the stream steady. April-May-June will be the best imo, but I forsee an April-May-July with June and E3 being virtual console launch month.

It's the period after Splatoon 2 that really matters. FIre Emblem Warriors likely won't be until September, Mario in November etc E3 needs to bring some games to fill out the calendar.

That depends on what the game is. If it has content packed in it that has a good variety of single player and multiplayer features it will do well. If it's a shallow experience with few modes (like SFV) then it will not do well. It needs to have a good mix of competitive play but also some fun party modes to give people to do when not battling one on one.

Reading this I just realised that they definitely should have minigames in this like punch the targets etc

Can't help but think Switch gets at least modest boost due to the public being more aware of it as a new Nintendo system. Wii U really was thought of as a Wii accessory. Public had no idea Nintendo had launched a new console.

Can't really judge without a full month's data.
I think UK typically performs quite differently to the rest of Europe for Nintendo and they haven't shipped enough products.

Honestly, I think Nintendo should be happy with a Gamecube level performance by the end of 12 months. UK hasn't been an easy market for them for a long time.

I don't think people remember just how godawful the first 6 months were in software for WiiU and 3DS.

Zelda, Mario Kart, Arms, & Splatoon all in the first 6 months is so much better it isn't even comparable. And yes Mario Kart counts, most people did not play Mario Kart 8. The average consumer basically had no idea the WiiU even existed.

I remember the N64 launching in the UK with 20,000 units total. I'm glad things have improved.

Every new generation has seen console sales increase - certainly the MS and Sony consoles. N's, however, have been all over the place. Generally, N's handheld opening sales have seen increases generation to generation.

Unless they're sensible and start rolling out free demos and in-store promo then I can't see anyone being arsed.

Biggest thing stopping Switch from being a success is the lack of people being able to experience its cool features. It should have come bundled with a free game similar to Wii sports

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not a new game. The WiiU version shipped 8.3 million units. You cant seriously be postioning it as a game no one knew about.

I don't know, depends how they market it, but I think it will do decent, not huge numbers.

That's what I thought. Like I didn't think Arms would be a system seller.

People asked the same thing about Splatoon

I'd be surprised if it does as well as Splatoon (surprisingly) did, because I feel a third person shooter with multiplayer and all is an easier sell than a fighting game(?). But hey we'll see.

Edit:

Yeah that's the thing too. Splatoon from what I remembered was showcased at the Nintendo competition among other things didn't it?

It's not what it sells today, it what it sells tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after, etc, etc...,

Nintendo fans were always going to turn up on the first day(s) but will it cross over into the more mainstream audience?

Personally I'm really not sure but we'll see soon enough.
