Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

I've been looking into modding this to make the battle HUD smaller again and strangely I've stumbled upon quite a lot of code and text that suggests this was (or still is?) planned for the Vita. One example is that the warning you get when enabling a booster is literally stored as follows:
Code:
BoosterWarningNotVita,\n\n[CENT][D06050]*This feature cannot be disabled once active.[C8C8C8],\n\n
BoosterWarningVita,\n[CENT][D06050]*This feature cannot be disabled once active.\n[CENT]You will also be unable to earn achievements.[C8C8C8],\n
That line is fully localized and integrated into the code as well (with platform checks). Sadly, nothing points at a PS4 release being planned yet.

Agreed. 5x is is way too fast (wtf Square :p), so I patched it down to 2x. Battles feel so much better now.
Here's a link: Booster x2 (battle FPS w/ booster = 30 instead of 75). This file should replace Assembly-CSharp.dll inside "install_directory\FF9_Data\Managed". Be sure to make a backup first!

I also tried a modification to upgrade the default battle FPS to 24, which looks pretty nice IMO. It speeds up all the battle animations as expected, but not to the degree that it looks bad: Default Battle FPS = 24, Booster x2 FPS = 48. It shouldn't break anything, but again, be sure to make a backup in case it does.
You can also set battle speed to "Slow" in the menu to get as much time to think as before, except with faster animations and better FPS.

It seems scaling down the UI requires some more complex modifications which sadly I can't do. Applying the Waifu filter to the backgrounds seems like a lot of work too. Let's hope other modders will take care of that! :)

Thanks for this!

Anyone else run into a glitch when you try to name Quina Quen?

Actually my game just freezes when I'm in config and other areas it seems like?

wow that sucks man I have no idea what the issue might be sucks you aren't having a too too pleasant time considering those issues but anyways saw this thread pop back to the front page and just want to tell you all how awful the 10,000 enemy kills achievement is like i've even done the 100,000 zombie kills achievement TWICE in Dead Rising: Off the Record and that was way more fun than this. This is my fav FF game but seriously i'm on like a little over 5,100 and it's so boring.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Do we know how background modding is going and if it is possible to actually do it?

I gave up, sorry.
I know the developer of Memoria was still trying as of a month or so ago, though.

But everyone was saying replacing the background art in this game would be easy!

Honestly though, I hope something comes along. The world map and battlefields need new textures in the worst way.

Any link to updates from that person you can provide?

The issue is that technically swapping around the file is decently easy.
... as long as it's another file with the same resolution and the same number of chunks, organized in the same pattern.
And the backgrounds aren't natively upscaled, they're like 244p-400p. So it's kind of useless to swap around those.

I've been using this a lot but doesn't seem to work with the new game version, it freezes a lot, for example when I enter config screen. Any chance to update it?

Have you tried Memoria? I noticed it can also change the battle FPS, though it doesn't seem to change the booster speed. It's also much better than my old patch as this should work even when the game updates.

EDIT > I now updated both of my patches: the x2 booster and the 24fps+x2 one as well.
New version of the booster-only patch: Booster x2 (updated)
New version of the booster+24fps patch: Default Battle FPS = 24, Booster x2 FPS = 48 (updated)
The new links have also been edited into my original post.

Thanks again for this!

Besides the minor graphical glitches (some 3d objects appearing in the wrong place) and the lack of analog control, I like this port.

finally got around to sinking some time into this. i had FFIX for PS1 but my 1st disc was scratched at the Evil Forest cutscene, meaning i couldn't progress past that.

Steam port is really nice. beautiful music and graphics. upping the speed was a much needed improvement and battles feel faster now even without the FF.

i just got to Burmecia. really enjoying the story but tbh i am finding it more linear than 7,8, even 10. feels like there is a lot of story to just click through. which is fine, the story rules, but as a game it's not scratching the same itch as those other entries.

i plan on seeing the whole game through tho, so we'll see if my opinion changes...

that puzzling face
The pacing definitely is different - it goes really deep into the details of what the characters do, etc. The whole ATE concept underlines that, actually.

yeah, i can see that. this is much closer to a storybook fairy tale than anything they have done. i find the story more compelling than 8 fwiw. there are many mysteries to unravel, many character origins to uncover.

ATE is a nice concept but I almost wish those cutscenes would just automatically switch, it's not exactly like i want to skip them, and if I don't pay attention i could miss something cool.

Do we know if this will ever hit ps4? I don't mind grabbing it on pc. I have it on digital ps vita,ps3. Just wondering. I'd have thought 8 and this would be coming at some point.

I'm having trouble installing Memoria to my game. The directions are confusing. Help? They mention a .ini in the files in the readme but there is no ini.

Don't really play old rpgs all that often. Enjoying it for the most part, but flow of the battles feel incredibly slow. Everything has so much delay after a command is given and animations take forever to finish.

Isn't there a fast forward mode for battles ?

This is one of my favorite Final Fantasy games, and yet I have never replayed it fully. I purchased this port on Steam after FFXV left a bad taste in my mouth. This is even better than I remember. The characters and their interactions with each other makes it worth it all by itself. Only think that sucks is I'm playing on my Surface 3, and it was flawless until a week ago. Out of nowhere now, the cutscenes stutter terribly. No idea why. I thought it was due to Windows updates, so I rolled updates back but no fix.

Try checking what other programs you have running that might be causing slowdown.

I had a weird thing on my laptop where battle.net running in background was causing issues with opengl applications for a while a month or two back was weird

And yes game is great well written characters in gorgeous fantasy world prototypical FF of yore distilled to perfection is what ff9 is especially a perfect distilling of the ps1 era FF games

Started playing this, 16 years after my one and only playthrough.

What's with these LOADING TIMES, MAN. WTF. Did this crap really carry over from the PS1? Everything else is more or less acceptable, the framerate is a real shame, but I'm not sure I'll be able to endure these pre-battle loading times.

Hey guys, I started playing this too. I did about 20 minutes of googling to try to identify what mods have come along in the past year and got lost. I've seen some stuff on Memoria but it looks like there's features in there like playable Beatrix and other such things that don't feel true to what I'm looking for - just simple quality of life improvements, faster battles, better backgrounds, music, etc. (That said, if there are any interesting gameplay hacks I'm curious about that too. But right now I really just want to re-experience FF9 in its best form.)

Thanks!

edit: jett, there's a setting in the config menu called battle intro or something that you can turn on or off. I haven't even gotten to a real fight yet but I imagine turning that off would remove that ridiculous pre-battle load.

So, FFIX is my favorite game ever and I ran out of patience waiting for this port to come to PS4.

How is it, overall? Graphically and otherwise.

To follow up on the post right above mine, I'm also curious about any recommended QoL mods.

Almost 20h into the Steam version and the game is incredibly good. I absolutely love it.

One question: Can I encounter the Ragtime Mouse with the "no encounter hack" enabled?

It really depends if you think stylized or pixelated (against not-pixelated 3D models) is the lesser of two evils.

I'd take pixelated, but that'd mean a CRT and the original character models.
If i have to play it on a fullhd+ screen, decent upscaling is the least.

I prefer some subtle CRT shader if you wanna artificially blend the models and the backgrounds, which is how I played it. That waifu upscaler kind of look does an even bigger disservice to the art style in my opinion

Yeah, but we can have a better upscale from the background source compared of PC version, I think.
But, I'm always use my preset for this version. It softens 3D objects and background.

BTW, I thought the game was Steam Cloud, but no, I lost my save when I arrived in Memoria while I switch to Windows 10. -_-

EDIT : Well, the render with Waifu2x is a bit "too painting" and "too clean"

I gotta say this person is doing some pretty stellar work. If the rest of the backgrounds end up with that level of detail this could turn out to be an impressive project.

Also impressive is that the person seems to have started working on this only a month ago and according to the project's website they've already completed the entirety of Disc 1 and are well into Disc 2. That's some nice efficiency, lol.

I was thinking of starting another playthrough soonish but now I'm thinking I'll wait and see how this project develops. Let's just hope they don't end up losing their motivation or something.

Wasn't sure if it was worth making a new thread, so I might just revive the OT for this: when things start picking up? I just finished the
Burmecia
part and the story is a bit too slow for my liking.

You've basically just finished Disc 1, so to speak. I'd say keep going since you haven't even got the full party yet nor unlocked the entire battle system i.e.,
Summons
. Honestly by this point I was already pretty into the story but if you're still not felling it by, say, around the time you
get back to Alexandria
then maybe the game's just not for you?
