Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

jts

...hate me...
You mean $359.99...they won't have to discount the Switch or game come Christmas...

The image was fake...Gray Joycons on the front and Neon Joycons on the side? Umm...
It was not fake but rather a poor job by the the Russian importer putting together an a unofficial bundle. They even messed the photoshop.

It's not relevant to us though.
Project Mekuru looked very intriguing. Let's not sleep on a dynamic 4-player battle-puzzler.
Absolutely.

Why is anyone disappointed? The direct even says it will have an Arms/Splatoon focus... E3 is so close... It's good they got all of these stuff out the way here
They didn't even focus on Arms and Splatoon, they announced like two things for each and dragged out the announcements as long as they possibly could. It was not a good Direct by any standards.

I re-watched it. I am looking forward to Arms more now then I was previously. VC better be at E3 or I am going to start to become an entitled gamer and find a torch and pitchfork.

It was a good direct. They announced all their summer/smaller-scale games before E3, and especially dropped all their localizations. Japanese third-parties got their moments. They announced ARMS and Splatoon 2 release dates.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Yeah biggest upside is this direct in theory clears out all of the smaller stuff so the E3 presentation isn't clogged with a bunch of shit fans wish they'd had gotten out of the way already.

So people look forward to indies, and most definitely look forward to using them to pad lists in favor for a console of choice. But when disappointment sets in, they do not count and will be omitted in these lists when these ridiculous arguments come up.

I can't figure out if it's hypocritical, contradictory, or just some cryptic set of rules that these individuals (individual to individual basis) come up with on the fly in the heat of the moment.

Indies are games. Indies arguably have just as much of an impact on the industry as AAA games nowadays. Sure, the budget isn't there (and can't forget the all important graphical prowess), but the fun factor is definitely there and a good chunk of these games have lasting power.

So while we wait 3-5 years between AAA games, hoping they are good, indies (and some random Japanese made games) keep us busy. If people are playing them, they very much are considered video games. I would consider watching paint dry to be not a video game and shouldn't be counted (captain obvious I know, but the point stands).

I think people forget that this year is potentially the 3DS's swansong. Nintendo has to make it go out in atyle. They can't abandon that 40 million?? Userbase. Until Switch gets more games in its library expect some 3DS games. Their will come a time soon when we'll salute the 3DS when it sleeps eternally.

Probably the worst Direct I've seen in a long time. Wasn't interested in any of the offerings aside from Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Arms and Sonic Forces. I just found a lot of the games uninteresting and the Splatoon video to be a horrible advert for the game's new mode.

That said, I LOVE the visual redesign for Directs. Koizumi headlining is also good since I liked him in the Switch reveal event.

Also, people are allowed to be disappointed regardless of what Nintendo said was gonna be featured. The games they showed alongside it were middling for the most part. No need to mobilize the defense force.

It's okay to be disappointed, but don't get mad at Nintendo for delivering on what they said they'd deliver on.

Good Direct. I love the new format and presenter. Splatoon 2, ARMS and the new amiibo all look fantastic.

It's a great time to be a Nintendo fan especially with E3 still to come in less than two months!!

I am interested in several of those. Very happy with the direct. I really only needed dats for ARMS and Splatoon 2. Everything else was a bonus.

And don't judge but I have been looking for a monopoly game to play with the family on the TV for a while. There hasn't been anything this generation. (baby in the house so physical board games with small pieces are a no-no right now.)

You know what would be a brilliant companion to new multiplayer focused titles?

Virtual Console! And they even had to raise my hopes and dash them expertly by giving a headline referring to a "Legacy of Greatness".

I just can't believe they haven't even mentioned it yet.

It was a good direct by any reasonable standard...

The monopoly game that is being ported to Switch is also on the PS4 (and most likely on the X1 too). My roommate and I played it last weekend.

It was a good summary of the mostly known stuff and good to see some release dates. Not particularly interested in most of the things, though. Maybe Splatoon could be getting interesting for me again if it has some more new stuff like the coop mode shown.

Now bring the real guns to E3, Nintendo. :)

People really need to keep their expectations realistic if they're going to complain about being disappointed at that Direct, especially for one in mid-April, two months before one of their most important E3s in afew years.

From my pov, I suppose the Direct accomplished what it set out to do--ARMS is kinda getting a hold on me.

Honestly, I really have avoided board games on consoles because they feel disjointed, bloated with menus, and slow. Even if I were to forget about all of that, the way if feels on a console: sitting there pressing buttons, watching the game practically play the game out for use after fiddling with the menus, just makes me feel like I was playing the actual board game.

I will say, same goes for my wife, that we both were intrigued by the possibility of emulating a traditional board gaming-like setting. Lay the Switch on the ground/table (board), and the rolling of the dice with the joycon adds to the experience. I highly doubt the menus will be gone, but this set up seems to be a pretty nice compromise if you want an authentic as possible (although impossible) experience with board games on a console.

This was a very underwhelming switch direct for me. Sat through the whole switch part feeling "meh" and "next".

I was enjoying the 3ds direct a lot and wished all these 3ds games were released on the switch as well.

After 2 minutes of ARMS I got so bored I skipped the whole thing.

Relatively dull direct on the Switch side, but that was expected. Hopefully they bring it at E3, although I'll be keeping my expectations low. Frankly if stuff like Ever Oasis was getting a Switch release I'd probably bite, can't be bothered buying anymore 3DS games at this point.

Overall it was an ok Direct I guess. Highlights for me:

  • ARMS : For me, they're doing a good job of showing that this isn't seemingly just a throwaway, shallow arcadey party game. Different weapons or "arms" is cool, but I love that apparently the individual fighters have distinct, innate abilities too. Mixing and matching should be fun. The Ramen chick looks cool, but wish they showed at least 2 more fighters. I hope the final game will have 1 or 2 more fighters that haven't been shown yet.
  • Splatoon 2 : Was not expecting a mode like this. Seems pretty cool. Eager to see what the single player mode is like though.
  • Amiibos: Both Cloud amiibos will be day 1 for me. No way I could resist that. MM Link also looks pretty awesome. Bayo I might grab, and same for Splatoon 2 if it's a triple pack.
  • Rayman Legends : This game looks gorgeous. Glad I waited out for it, and cannot wait to play it on Switch. Almost wanna replay Origins just to prep.
  • Disgaea 5 : Really hyped for this and cannot wait. Hope it'll be as packed with content and options as D4.
  • Yellow Joycons : Looks gorgeous with the grey, and can't wait to mix and match with the neon red and blue. Wish they showed a release date though. Also, $80 without a puppy controller grip hurts.

Kirby's anniversary thing was kinda disappointing. Was hoping there was gonna be at least one considerably bigger game to round out the commemoration. Guess I'll wait for Kirby's Switch entry.

Also, lol at the plug for the stand. When I saw that on the list, I got a little excited cause I thought they were releasing a more slick or redesigned stand or something. It's just the same ol' plastic taco shell.

Aside from that, Ever Oasis, MH Stories, and FE Echoes look pretty neat (especially Ever Oasis) but I wonder how dungeon-crawly or grindy they'll be vs. having engaging stories and characters.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I really like the new format. Whether you care about the announcements or not, things moved along at a brisk pace and it was game after game with little filler.

I mean, I am personally disappointed as I am looking for anything to play on my Switch at the moment and none of the games they talked about really resonated with me.

The format of the Direct was good though. Had a nice pace to it.

Late as fuck, but while skimming through posts...

Wait, doesn't Sony own Fate?

Nope. Type-Moon owns literally everything to do with Fate/Stay Night (and its spin-off stuff) and is an independent company. It just happens that they work with the Sony-owned Aniplex quite a bit.

One disappointment, I wish the Switch had a better "available right after this Direct" game. The 3ds got a Kirby game, and the Switch got the Puyo Puyo demo. I would have preferred a small 1st party eshop game or even a demo for a bigger game like Arms or a cool new Nindie.

Oh and can we talk about how stiff Ever Oasis' producer looked? I loved the robotic stance, face, and leather jacket all while holding that adorable plushy. Weirdly endearing.

I don't get very hyped for these directs since they are usually pretty underwhelming imo

Splatoon looks great though, can't wait. Arms I'm not super sold on and Mk8 I may buy again though it sucked on the Wii u. But that was mostly due to it lacking a battle mode and my favorite character. Now it's fixed and they even have squid kids... Hmm tempting

I enjoyed the pace, but I feel it may be part of the issue here. Getting 20 second clips of games, with a brief description of what it is (basically it is redundant, because they are repeating the same thing that is being shown on the screen), may have possible left people going "uh...?" Four games later: "Wait, what did they announce four games ago and what was it about?" Extreme case, but I can see it happening.

I do hope they keep the format, but improve on it by actually letting the games they show click, or not, with the viewer. I'm pretty sure that a lot of the people in this thread saying that these games do not interest them, will go back to some of these titles shown in this direct and find out there was something interesting, and "gasp"...fun.

EDIT: Going back and watching, it was basically watching a slowed down sizzle reel. The only things that really could be deduced in 20 seconds to 1 minute is: what kind of game (platformer, RPG etc), name of game and origin (AAA, Indie etc), what it looks like in motion, and graphics. The guy talking in the background was basically summing up what was already presented on screen, so he didn't help. The only thing that is going to make the biggest impact are the graphics, and the origin of the game with that small amount to go on. How the game plays, though, beyond being just an RPG isn't being presented here. So I do hope they improve on the format.

Produced and directed by Koichi Ishii, known for directing the first three Final Fantasy games, most of the Mana series and credited with the creation of chocobos and moogles, Ever Oasis is a game with a striking style and tons of potential.

From that direct alone, I will buy Sino Mora, Battle Chasers, Arms, Mekuru, Mariokart, Monopoly, Teris Puyo Puyo and even Payday. Tons of great games that appeals to me. If you are disappointed then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe the Switch isn't the system for you. I'm a lapsed console gamer so I guess I don't count.

Wow, went in expecting a lot of Splatoon and Arms, came out surprised when there were more stuff than I expected, see how that works? 😃
