I can corroborate everything Alberto is saying. Dunno if that treehouse forum is still around but I was there when "muppet" was cooking that up.

Quite the feat that it's still referenced so fondly nearly a decade later.

This was my favorite one Am I crazy or did Geist have nudity?. Where DetectiveGAF started playing a game, screenshotting it, extracting the assets, looking through 3D model asset sites and ultimately the original modeler of the character entered the thread, all for some hypothetical blocky virtual snatch.

Of course there was the one where DetectiveGAF started digging through the trash of Retro Studios and they changed their webcam to us, but I don't know what the thread is called.

Of the ones that are still semi-active/active, I like the You know Ellie, we really are the last of us, gay fifa glitches and Kaz Hirai fake twitter account threads. Of the past, aside from the ones mentioned, I remember nearly having a heart attack from laughing at the AC:Unity glitch thread, Antonio Banderas gif collection, FaintColt and more. Gaf is a goldmine for hysterical shit. Oh and I fucking love ME:Andromeda's bad animations thread haha. And I think The Order 1886 review thread was pretty funny as well.

I was there in the room when Muppet composed the final Fantasy post. We were college roommates, some might say we were more than that but I never saw it that way. They wore their pajamas and nibbled a bit of leftover pocket, I remember it like it was yesterday you see.

They were so fucking furious at the announcement. I tried to calm them down. He went by he in those days in the days, months, years since our understanding of each other had grown.

To be betrayed by square was to be betrayed by a phantom limb. They hated it. He chose the name before that betrayal but even at the time it made sense. A sock puppet. Literally a flash face guided by another, guided by the cruel taskmasters at square. They never recovered honestly.

Shocking Alberto is correct. They are working on an piece of interactive fiction. That betrayal seeps into it.

But my thumbs couldn't take it anymore. So, I paused the game, took a break and switched thumbs and kept mashing, and the freaking thunderfuck wouldn't die. I finally gave up and reset the console hoping I would have better luck next time and the game wouldn't get stuck. NOPE Same shit. The guy just doesn't die. Anyone else have the same problem?

The old Super Smash Bros and Nintendo Direct hype threads were always great fun. The atmosphere when everyone was hyped beyond belief, speculating what would happen, was really fun :)

My favorite thread was the one where Evilore went to Europe, said that Salvia didn't work on him and called everyone in the Netherlands ugly. It was like a fever dream travel blog.

Technically it was OT, but it was bizarre. I'm still not sure if it was real or not...

The MS Paint threads got me to join - I even posted entries before my membership was approved by tracking down a member outside the forum and asking them to post on my behalf. Unfortunately most of those images are likely to be dead now.

That thread is gold. The best thing about it is that people ACTUALLY believed that.

Close second is Project Beast leak thread. The hype... Oh my God.

Edit: the PS4 reveal hype thread is a good answer too. The Kaz gifs oh my god, that shit is art

Pretty much any thread built on the premise of any given company is going to die/dominate going into any given gen is always a joy to read in hindsight because the majority "consensus" on gaf ends up wrong practically every single time.

I think the Vita flopping was the only time gaf was mostly on the money on that score from what I've read.

Holy shit... so many people have been so thoroughly taken in by this over the years! That it was a carefully constructed troll post the whole time is just absolutely incredible.

I was reading GAF before, but that thread made me stay. Too bad all those images are offline, there was some great stuff in there like the Wallguy journey around the world.

Others I can think of:

- Every thread with Dyack and Too Human, culminating in 'put up or shut up'
- Super Mario Galaxy's box art says you're gay
- Can't find the link, but there was a thread about 10 years ago with pics of Nintendo's boxes for E3. Think it was Jarosh who made this gem:

The greatest ever Nintendo Gahgiddy gif. Watching porn with his sister in the room. DQ7 (I think) going 3DS. KZ2 screenshot carnage. Barcelona-ton. Are for or against Too Human? Iwata bomb zal droppen. E3 presser threads. Those are just the ones which spring to mind, so many good times.
