Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap OT | What is The Secret of Your Power?

Yes I've 100% the game and unlocked the full gallery with the videos.

I would actually say though, it did strike me as slightly misguided for the developer to have a bunch of unlockable bonus videos as part of the default game file in a digital release. Some people might like those extra few hundred megs of Switch internal space freed up instead of videos you would watch once, if you ever unlock them at all.

That's why they are rather compressed/low-fi, there's only about 170 MB worth of video in there. I thought it was worth it because most players would be exposed to a good portion of them, and it is an unusual in-game bonus. 170 MB isn't that much and you can move the game to a SD card eventually. To counterbalance we also have done extra work to reduce the package size while keeping the loading as invisible as possible.

For a comparison point, I have no idea why a game like Ultra Street Fighter 2 on the Switch is 2.7 GB. It sounds like a little lazy but admittedly I haven't played the game yet and maybe they have lots of high-res contents. *EDIT* According to http://gameidealist.com/news/downlo...fighter-ii-final-challengers-nintendo-switch/ the game has a huge gallery (it's saying "1500 illustrations" ?) which would explain it.

Fair enough, I did actually enjoy them and if they're that small it's okay. I had assumed they might be around half of the (admittedly still reasonable) file size.

BTW, cool game, please do all Wonder Boy/MW games in the same style I will by them all ;)

I absolutely salute the inclusion of the videos.

To those who have some affinity to the original, seeing these sessions being recorded were a joy.

170MB is neither here or there.

I wish devs wouldn't do this. Maybe I'm out of touch but I've never used a gallery feature in any game... ever.

I really appreciated this game. Its like Adventure of Link but without the bullshit aspects of it and better combat. No really, the platforming was really solid for an RPG hybrid of its time.

So anyway, how are the other Monster World games? I played Monster Land a couple of days ago and found it a bit unforgiving but still a fun game.

I see it like this:

Wonderboy - Fun little platform game but pretty limited and "you had to be there"
Wonderboy in Monsterland - The best game in the series with some great designs, an appropriate length and ... oh my god those fucking red elevating blocks in the final castle I hate this game so much.
Wonderboy 3 - Really cool game, but not quite as focused as Monsterland but doesn't have the red blocks so probably better overall
The rest - Let's take Wonderboy 3 and add extra stuff and does it make it better nope it is kind of garbage, but I heard they are good, nope, so let's kill the series for 25 years until someone does an awesome remake of 3.

So yeah, play Monsterland. Technically there has already been other versions but none of them are as good as the SMS game so that should get the same treatment as this.

Arcade version is best, and PCE got a great port of that, albeit branded with an anime character. Mark III version at least has a nice FM soundtrack.

That is the popular sentiment, but I always thought the arcade version sucked by comparison. It had bigger and better graphics, but the precision of the gameplay suffered and it just didn't have the same sense of discovery.

Sure that is going to be mostly nostalgia talking, but here we all are.

Just as I said, did my part and immediately rebought this when my Switch arrived today (^____^)

...now I'll actually finish it

Just finished the game, tremendous job by Lizardcube. Their remastered version looks and plays wonderfully, while still drawing attention to just how good the original was. I don't think you could do this any better than they have.

I beat the game again on normal to see how fast I could do it. Got just under an hour and a half. Never died and only spent one potion on the Vampire Dragon.

Other way around.

Arcade version came out first, I first played it a year or two ago on Wii VC Arcade.

Played the SMS version afterwards from hearing it was easier and found the port wasn't 1:1 because some of the jumps I expected to make didn't happen because platforms weren't positioned 1:1 with the Arcade version.

So yeah, you probably are affected by nostalgia. lol

I bought this for Switch last night and played about an hour. I unlocked the Mouse and can't get used to his combat style yet. Seems like a fun game. How long is it exactly? I'm trying to play it alongside a few other games and I want to know what I'm getting myself into.

Roughly four to six hours depending on if you do 100% completion.

Can anyone give me a quick rundown of how to find the secret levels? I'm on a terrible internet connection but have the game with me and really want to play what's left now that I've finished the game. I found the mouses secret level and the humans secret level but I'm assuming there is an area for each monster?

From memory,
the Lizard level is in the desert. When going left from the entrance, kill the first monster in the water that spits out the fireballs and go right. The Piranha level is at the beach. On the first screen go into the water and open the hidden door on the top platform. The Lion level is also at the beach. A bit to the right there is a hidden block on the ground between several small pillars with enemies on them. You can't see the block, it's a little difficult to explain, unfortunately. The Hawk level is by the volcano. Just fly to the right. You can access the Human level after finishing the game. In the village just go left into the house next to the mouse blocks.

You forgot Mouse:
head into the underground and jump down the well that will take you to the Damyo Temple. Head left, and at the very next screen, maneuver to the far left and look for what looks like an open area below the ground behind some foreground objects. Use the Mouse's small size to squeeze through a hidden passageway and into the Unknown.

Restarted last night an already got right back to where I was before taking a break to wait for my Switch IE: Lion-Man

Still adore this game and I was grinning the entire time AGAIN when replaying it up to that point (^____^)

Just 100%ed this on Switch and loved every minute. This is the new standard for 2D remasters and I want this team to do the entire series now.

FUCKIN-A!!!

Probably my favorite remaster ever next to the likes of Bionic Commando ReArmed

PERFECT fusion of art, masterful music and presentation layered on top of the original foundation

Remember: I had not EVER played the Wonderboy series before this came out, so this ain't nostalgia talking :)

Full ack! Also 100%'ed this just yesterday. Haven't played the original back then, but enjoyed the remake for all of it's glory. Please go on with this, Lizardcube! <3

Yeah, I think the same. After playing, and knowing, and loving the Master System version, I really put it above the arcade version.

Finally finished this last night

soooo sad to see it end :(

and man, that last castle was busting my balls bad, lol. Alas, I persevered.

Looking forward to replaying in a couple months and will get for a 100 percent run then (^____^)

Did 100% yesterday, 8.16 hours. Absolutely fantastic game, gonna do a second run with wonder girl once i cut down the backlog a bit. Now, to finish Blaster Master Zero.

I think I'm almost done? I got 5 charms and
bought the special sword
. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I found
a room in the sky with nothing in it? Is that where I'm supposed to be?
Otherwise, I'm a bit lost. I farmed the castle for like 10k gold to have a safety net, and now I'm just sort of wandering around trying to figure out the next push.

Try equipping the
magic saber that turns stars into breakable blocks, you'll then find out that that room in the sky is not so empty after all ;)

There's a 6th stone.
Beat the game and go to your house.

That's in my backlog too. I played it for maybe a half an hour or so the day it came out and then Wonder Boy sucked me in.

I need to get back to playing Wonder Boy this weekend, I was relatively far in the game (I think). The last time I played it, I got my ass kicked by the
vampire dragon
boss. What's the trick to beating him?

Thank you! Didn't realize this was my issue!

What do I DO in that room?

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
I was just browsing Play Asia and noticed they put up a WB:TDT PS4 preorder page with July as a tentative release date: let's hope it's not Asia only, will certainly double dip if this comes out here in Europe, too!
From the latest Limited Run Games newsletter.

It's pretty much guaranteed to be PS4 only though. We'll find out on Tuesday.

If you actually want the answer
once you make blocks you can break them.

Disappointed it is PS4 only but the way they've been wording their replies to physical release questions it was pretty obvious they were going the Limited Run route.

They don't really know how to go about getting it released physically on Switch but with PS4, Limited Run sort it all etc.

I don't want a PS4 copy but I guess I'll try and get one if that's all we're getting. If I miss out there (cause, you know, it's Limited Run) I will try my luck with an Asian copy hopefully.

Considering how Limited Run releases tend to turn out, I'm just inclined to directly import a physical copy from Asia instead....

Last boss killed me. Boo. It's not even that it's difficult, but getting in to attack it seems almost impossible. Gonna have another run!

Also, is there a list of items to be found? I'm missing the bottom left weapon/shield/armor and the bottom right weapon.

E: Just found the Tasmanian Sword. Only missing the bottom left everything now.

If you have the
tasmanian sword
just turn into lion man, use the best equip and you shouldn't have any issue. If you don't have that it's a bit trickier to do with the falcon, he beat my ass a few times as well but once you learn his patterns and get the timing right is doable.

Lol last boss with Lion Man was a joke. What a fantastic game. I LOVE platformers. Need more games like this on my Switch!

E: Also, uh...What do I do now that I have the last stone? There's still one missing weapon on my screen. And I've seen screenshots of an hour glass next to the last heart? I'm trying to wrap the game up before moving on.

Where is the
Tasmanian Sword
? I found an entry about it on IGN's Wiki for the game, but I don't know exactly where the location they mention is.

It's completely hidden. In the underground on your way to the Damyo Temple you'll hit a few screens that split into two paths (top and bottom), with one always leading to a dead-end. In the last dead-end (top) you can hold up in the right place to reveal a door.

Right, it's this one.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I would buy again physical on Switch, but not any disc system.

Limited Run have a bad rep do they?

No, Limited Run is great -- they've always done a great job, and the only complaints I've seen are from people who didn't manage to get the game before it sold out. iam8bit is the one everybody hates.
