Persona 5 Social-Link/Confidant discussion |OT| Laughing Banana is Makoto's husbando

I mean I think the variety of choices we have in Persona games allows you to view certain relationships how you want to, so your viewpoint is pretty valid too! I just liked her and Joker together myself. But I do get you.

Also does Chihaya's social link start after you complete that Mementos quest?

I too enjoy the Ann romance. The fact that she feels like your best friend is why I like her. The person you end up with should have that kind of closeness, IMO. And Joker is absolutely attracted to her, as folks have said. Their romance scenes are pretty adorable.

Futaba is cute.

Mitsuru will always be the ultimate waifu.

Sae has the chance to dethrone her. I havent beat the game so I dunno yet. Lol

Makoto has "waifuuuuu!" written all over her.

Mitsuru is Makoto's waifu evolution.

Makoto has a lot of Mitsuru in her, while Haru has Mitsuru's story.

Makoto is like if they took the insecurities and the doubts of Mitsuru, which you get late game P3 and played them out over the entire game. She's Mitsuru's inner girl, lacking a lot of the steely exterior of Mitsuru. (Tellingly, she's still fairly steely :p)

But both are competent, poised, and more naive than at first blush. Both are ignorant about cuisine, fashion (although Mitsuru has a stylist), and love. Both fall for the main character on a romance path where the main character is helping them find the world and thus themselves. Mitsuru's link does play heavier on an inner romantic though, going with Haru's story. While Mitsuru is secretly into romance novels and movies, Makoto is secretly into the Yakuza series (in film).

Both ride motorcycles. Both look up to their dads and seek to follow in their footsteps. Etc.

Makoto does have a special justice bent, focusing in on criminal justice and she is much earlier on in conflict with her subservience to the adults and the status quo, whereas that only comes out in the story surrounding that crucifixion night in P3.

I also think they pushed the curiosity angle harder with Makoto and that she is much more about passion and zeal than Mitsuru. Mitsuru is more about competence while they poke holes in Makoto's effectiveness much earlier on, going with above.

Willpower is very central to both.

I dated Mitsuru in P3. I like her a lot. But...a) I really identify with the sort of struggle Makoto was in and the narrative service it got from the start, b) I like the P5 self-insert better and probably the link better, especially with how much earlier it comes, and c) Makoto just charmed me more.

But yeah as I said before, you can really feel that the creators were mulling Mitsuru over with this one.

...

And then Haru is like if you throw a very different girl with a very different daddy into the Mitsuru situation of late P3. So it is playing with another aspect of Mitsuru.

...

But yeah going back to what I said, Mitsuru was obvious to me and spoke to me but not quite wholly and then the game kept me from her for so long and her link was rushed. It is mostly P4, where I arrived at a waifu in large part through elimination.

Edit:

Oh another core change. Mitsuru is much more the untouchable senpai, whereas the way Makoto approaches you and the way she seeks out your opinions mostly level that senpai relationship. The latter does scream "waifuuu" more, but Makoto finds things in you more as an equal, while Mitsuru stoops and finds you tasty and is thrown into turmoil by that fact.

Edit 2:

And it is a mixed bag, my complaint. Mitsuru's narrative works in part on delaying her so much. I think that story would have worked better for me in another format, where they do that delay, say, and then take more time building up from it....Like if the game went into March or something.

Just didn't quite fit for me.

I don't get why this is something people bring up about Makoto as if everybody else keeps their PT gimmick outside of the metaverse 24/7. You can be two things. You can have conflicting personality traits that reveal themselves in different situations.

but she almost never goes back to her rebel personality

she did it for that one scene and that's it

Did you do her confidant?..Or finish the game? Every act of rebellion isn't running people over with a motorcycle. When she
Takes the information from Sae's computer
,
Challenges Akechi at the school festival
,
Seriously wants to fight Tsukasa
, and even re-evaluates her entire stance on "justice" and who is responsible for it. Those things are all rebellious. That's not how student council goody-two-shoes Makoto behaves. Change is an ongoing process. It would have been less satisfying and unrealistic if she suddenly became a different person than they one we were introduced to the second she got her persona. The thieves still need to her be level headed as well. Between Morgana's hissy fits, Ryuji almost exposing them every time he talks and Ann allowing herself to get swept up in it, Haru having the backbone of a compromised jellyfish, and Joker being on probation and thus suspecious as it is SOMEONE has to be watching their back and weighing risk and reward.

Amazing diagnosis. :)

Last Dungeon, got all but Sojiro to max rank, just rank 6. Still don't understand how it wasn't possible for me to get everyone to max rank. There were so many times where I couldn't be with a confidant after school or in the evening because there weren't there (most of the times they were there but didn't want to spend time with me) so I could do shit.

Really gets on my nerves as I wanted to concentrate on the other stuff on my second playthrough (books, videogames and last personas).

Next Persona MC(or P5 update) really need to be fully voiced, it's a shame to let all those snark choices go unspoken.

It would have been less satisfying and unrealistic if she suddenly became a different person than they one we were introduced to the second she got her persona. The thieves still need to her be level headed as well.

You can indeed see that Kaneshiro car-motorcycle fight outburst in her character throughout the rest of the game. It opened her up to following her heart and doing what she believed in rather than doing what adults thought she should do and what her constricted sense of possibility thought she could do. Her entire social link is about that. Rethinking her future and actually pursuing a justice she believes in, i.e. going off the rails of her life up to that point.

She is in constant rebellion and never goes back on the motorcycle display, even if she is embarrassed by it and tries to walk back her being like that (highlighted in, say, her embarrassment over her metaverse costume).

I get the desire to see her blow up more often. In the link, she does present it as a central aspect to her life she tries to keep a lid on (and does so very well). As I said above, I think this is also an issue in the same neighborhood of that where Makoto seems to come across as uninterested or unloving to some. The link would have probably been more satisfying if it had worked in such a moment.

Really though, I don't think it is a problem with her character, so much as the presentation of that character. I think with Makoto you really need to just stop and think about where her eyes are and what she's interested in and what she does to find what works her up. If you do that, I think it is damn obvious how passionate she is.

Personally, I love that about her.

Dialogue choices in this game are pretty on point, yes :p.

Good stuff.

I always liked the one where Futaba goes a bit crazy and makes all those car sounds and then Makoto is alarmed and tries to talk her down.

It is like, let Futaba do her thing, but the concern at her "madness" is also amusing.

The Mementos conversations are great.

I kinda wish there was similar chatter in the Palaces though. Considering how crazy they can be, it could have made for some amusing little asides.

Very annoyed the conversations are extremely infrequent in the actual palaces.

Was Takemi not in the running? I mean, she's super punk!

latest

Takemi was the most attractive of the female adults to me in terms of personality, story, relationship dynamic, and look.

The romance felt fairly out-of-place to me narratively and was mostly just indulgent of fantasy, but....

...

I think we could really use adult Persona again, tbh. There are a lot of strong adult characters in P5 it would have been fun to play as and that would give them a new angle from which to approach those kinds of characters.

Same, Tae feels like that's all that's stopping her from being a party character. (At least design-wise)

Having reached back up to Haru, it's only now occurred to me, why is her tracksuit not an outfit?

maxresdefault.jpg

I know it's not as stylish as her Phantom Thieves getup, nor the Erika costume from the Catherine pack, but damn it's adorable on her.

This page has now been blessed. Kawakami is my number 1 out of all the p5 girls by a mile. Makoto wasn't nearly punk enough for me.

Yeah I went into the game thinking I was gonna pick Makoto easily, then Kawakami ran down the ramp and hit Makoto with a steel chair for the 3 count.

Yeah :)

She also reminds me of some relationships I've had in the past, think that might be why she sticks with me a bit.

Making coffee for her all day. Now that's a life worth living! <3

By the way, September spoilers:
is she really not coming to Hawaii? I'm pretty sure I saw a screenshot of her there, did I just get rekt by some RNG? I'm gonna hate Makoto for the rest of my life if she doesn't come.
