The Dismissal of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

I was disappointed that it wasn't Metroid, but more than that I was just very tired of 2D platformers at the time.

I'd be down for a re-release on Switch, though.

With that said...I have to admit I'll be pretty deflated if it turns out Retro are making Donkey Kong Country Returns 3. I have no doubt that it'd be a fantastic game, but I'd much rather they be working on Metroid or a new IP altogether. It's not that I think the series is beneath Retro - I'd just have much more interest different genres from them. Indies will inevitably provide more than enough 2D platformers for the Switch.

I am firmly convinced that this is one of the best games of all time, but there's something about the whole package and its marketing that seems unappealing. The box art for example, gives off a toys-to-life esque, shovelware kind of vibe, that doesn't give the impression of elite game design.

Is it really that negatively received? Before launch, sure, but I see plenty of love for it nowadays. Even seen some people call it the best DKC installment ever released. I still need to beat Returns, but this is next on my list as soon as I beat it.

Re-release it on the Switch Virtual Console.
We're not getting Wii U VC, haha. I don't think the Switch has the horsepower. Might as well re-release it at this point.

The sad thing is is that this narrative is repeating itself this E3

NeoGAF: Do not believe rumors or you will get burned

Rumor: Pokemon Stars and Metroid Prime 4

NeoGAF: It's happening isn't it?

E3: Game

NeoGAF: What? No Pokemon or Metroid? Fail E3 for Nintendo.
I don't see anyone excited about Metroid at this E3. There's been no rumors as far as I know and the chances of Nintendo making a good new Metroid are roughly the chances of Konami making a good new Metal Gear game.

You already have that with Mario games which sell a lot more. There isn't any game to compare the Prime series with.

I dunno man, that kinda reminds me of Nintendo's stupid logic to why they ruined Paper Mario. "Well, we already have Mario & Luigi as an RPG spinoff, so why make Paper Mario one as well?", despite the fact that they're both completely different things.

Likewise, DKC is very different from 2D Mario even if they're both in the same genre. DKC is more focused on atmosphere and world building where Mario's all about being the most gamey game ever. You certainly won't see a Mario game with David Wise doing the soundtrack.

The only reason you're saying it was unnecessary is because you didn't care about it personally. No sequel is "necessary." The vast majority of them are "more of the same." And as been pointed out multiple times, Retro themselves wanted to do DK over Metroid. Your argument is disingenuous.

TF was no more unnecessary than Prime 2. And actually, unlike Prime 2, TF is a better game than the original.

Friend, arguing with you is like fighting with my ex. Look, I've stated my opinion and defended my position numerous times—stop telling me what I meant.

Agreed. There is room for multiple varieties of good 2D platformers. I sure as hell am not interested in more New Super Mario Bros in the same way I am for more Donkey Kong Country.

DKC was my favourite series as a kid and I was angry that it was neglected for over a decade. I'm so happy that I even got to play one new game in the series on the wii. I ended up buying the wiiu just because tropical freeze was announced. It made me kind of annoyed when I saw people disregard tropical freeze because it wasn't Metroid. I felt like saying "you got an entire trilogy of great games revisiting your child hood series, let me enjoy mine".

Is tropical freeze screenshot looks to be pre-release or something? I don't recall that level looking like that, I guess I imagined it looking better.

yup, that is an E3 pre-release shot. the final game got a visual polish overhaul.

updated with actual final screenshot (I just took that one). it's obviously not night and day but it made a difference nevertheless.

Honestly, I believe the game became a victim to what I would see as the false expectations. This happens a lot with Nintendo, and it is already starting to take form for E3.

Before Tropical Freeze's reveal Wii U already had a 2D Mario game, an exclusive (at the time) 2D Rayman game and a 2D Yoshi game. The very E3 where TF was first shown also gave us Mario 3D World, another game tailored for fans of linear platformers.

lt's not the consumers fault for expecting more variety from a console's library, especially coming from a developper that became known for creating some of the greatest single player 3D action aventure games of all time.

If retro is working on a new 2d DK game I'd be overjoyed, I wouldn't get angry if they work on a new IP or Metroid but it's not what I would like the most.

It was dismissed because it wasn't Metroid Prime 4. That's all there is to it.

I also feel like if Retro had announced a new IP instead, it would've seen the same backlash simply for not being MP4.....

Really really glorious sidescroller, but Retro never really nailed the "atmosphere".

Aside from that gameplay is the best it's ever been bar-none and the soundtrack does wonders.

It's one of the greatest games I have ever played, and needs a HD bundle with the DKCR on Switch.

Reminds of the terrible narrative of having to feel sorry for poor Retro being stuck having to make yet another DKCR game because evil, conservative Nintendo. And how Retro's talent deserve better on better hardware.

I would say it's 100% because it wasn't a new Metroid. In any other scenario it likely would've been warmly welcomed.

This ^^^^^^^^^^

I made a thread on here about a year ago praising DK:TF as the best 2d platformer of all time. I still stand by that.

Absolutely AMAZING game. Lovingly and meticulously made, and ridiculously difficult. It's everything the newer 2D Marios are not.

That said... I want a new fucking Metroid game.

I'm not interested in more quality platformers(Rayman, Mario, Donkey Kong) not matter how different they are when I could have gotten a Prime game that compares to nothing else on the system. This applied to my Wii U and sure as hell does with my current Switch

It was a 2D platformer on a system with plenty of 2D platformers.

It's not that it was a bad game, but the Wii U already had games in that genre by Nintendo alone, let alone indie developers who have also delivered quality games in that genre on the system. If another Donkey Kong game were to come to the Switch, I know I'd be disappointed, because there are indies out now (Shovel Knight, Wonder Boy, Blaster Master), and on the way (Hollow Knight) that are of a very high quality. And cheap. But there aren't games like Metroid Prime or a game like it that smaller developers can fill, at least not any I can see.

I'm hoping that we'll get a Tropical Freeze Switch port announcement at E3. Such a great game that I would love to revisit.

I don't know what you're talking about: there's lots of love for this game on GAF. Sure there's hate for it too but there's always hate.

I didn't have a Wii U so I didn't get to play it, but I would definitely pick it up on Switch if it ever gets ported. Actually it's the only game I really want to see ported from Wii U.

You mean the Switch that has no 2D platformer announced by Nintendo yet?

I'd love a final game in Retro's DK. As good as TF was there are still new ideas they could try to close the franchise.

He's probably talking about Yoshi's Woolly World, although he's mistaken, that didn't come out before DK: Tropical Freeze but a year after.

Right. Woolly World released like a year-and-a-half after Tropical Freeze. More if we're only talking NA.

Tropical Freeze. The best 2D platformer ever made. Should have been received like DOOM 2016 was.

Goddamn shame it wasn't a fucking shooter, eh?

I think it's just average, the platforming was too tough too often and the bosses were overly difficult.

git gud

The game wasn't even hard and I suck at platformers. I can't even beat the second world of Super Meat Boy. I will admit the bosses sucked, but so do the bosses in every 2D platformer.

It was also because it just looked like yet another Wii HD game, in line with NSMBU, Wii Fit U, and Wii Sports U. People were at least hoping for something more ambitious from Retro.

You went so far looking for the absolute worst screenshot of Tropical Freeze to cherrypick that you didn't even realize the one you grabbed was from an unfinished build. Who are you trying to fool, man?

Edit: Ok so that pre release pic is from Nintendo's website? Can't fault you there, then. Thats some shit.

I remember being more annoyed at another 2D Platformer more-so then not-Metroid.

They launched the console and padded the library with quick, easy to develop 2D Platformers like New Super Mario Bros U (plus an entire game of New Super Luigi U as DLC), an "exclusive" Rayman game, and IIRC they announced Yarn Yoshi around the same point in time. Plus they were hitting you up with even more 2D Platformers on the 3DS, and NSMBU and DKCTF were already sequels of Wii games. The backlash was just as much about Nintendo going Retro sidescroller platformer overload when we wanted them to do something else.

Now to be fair, DKCTF was maybe the best of that era of 2D Platformers coming back. But we all needed them to take a break from that genre for a while.

I'd be cool if Retro's next project isn't Metroid. I would like it to be an ambitious project that looks good though. (And if they're not making Metroid, I would like someone else to be making it).

Has this game been dismissed recently? I mean leading up to release it kind of was because it was another 2D platformer, contributing further to a lack of genre variety in Nintendo's lineup, but now everyone seems to agree that it's pretty great.

Platformers are pretty niche when you ignore all the moms that buy them for their kids. At the very least appreciation for the genre's game feel and level design is niche. A decent litmus test is seeing what game critics can even understand. DKCTF flew over their heads, and patience, for the most part.

I didn't need another Nintendo 2D platformer. If i didn't get it for free via Club Nintendo, I never would've "purchased" the game. As it stands now, it's in my Wii U backlog behind other exclusives like Bayo 2, XCX, and Fatal Frame.

Right. Woolly World released like a year-and-a-half after Tropical Freeze. More if we're only talking NA.

lt was revealed before Tropical Freeze. The point is among high profile Wii U games you had too many 2D or linear 3D platformers. You can add Luigi U or Mario Maker to the list.
