I don't think the original Donkey Kong Country games aged well, so I just couldn't get excited about the reboot.
This is debatable.TF was no more unnecessary than Prime 2. And actually, unlike Prime 2, TF is a better game than the original.

Not for those that highly value big IP platformers...
We're not getting Wii U VC, haha. I don't think the Switch has the horsepower. Might as well re-release it at this point.Re-release it on the Switch Virtual Console.
lolThat's logical.
I don't see anyone excited about Metroid at this E3. There's been no rumors as far as I know and the chances of Nintendo making a good new Metroid are roughly the chances of Konami making a good new Metal Gear game. The sad thing is is that this narrative is repeating itself this E3
NeoGAF: Do not believe rumors or you will get burned
Rumor: Pokemon Stars and Metroid Prime 4
NeoGAF: It's happening isn't it?
E3: Game
NeoGAF: What? No Pokemon or Metroid? Fail E3 for Nintendo.
You already have that with Mario games which sell a lot more. There isn't any game to compare the Prime series with.
The only reason you're saying it was unnecessary is because you didn't care about it personally. No sequel is "necessary." The vast majority of them are "more of the same." And as been pointed out multiple times, Retro themselves wanted to do DK over Metroid. Your argument is disingenuous.

Agreed. There is room for multiple varieties of good 2D platformers. I sure as hell am not interested in more New Super Mario Bros in the same way I am for more Donkey Kong Country.I dunno man, that kinda reminds me of Nintendo's stupid logic to why they ruined Paper Mario. "Well, we already have Mario & Luigi as an RPG spinoff, so why make Paper Mario one as well?", despite the fact that they're both completely different things.
Likewise, DKC is very different from 2D Mario even if they're both in the same genre. DKC is more focused on atmosphere and world building where Mario's all about being the most gamey game ever. You certainly won't see a Mario game with David Wise doing the soundtrack.
Is tropical freeze screenshot looks to be pre-release or something? I don't recall that level looking like that, I guess I imagined it looking better.
yup, that is an E3 pre-release shot. the final game got a visual polish overhaul.
(e3 build)
Honestly, I believe the game became a victim to what I would see as the false expectations. This happens a lot with Nintendo, and it is already starting to take form for E3.
I haven't played either Retro DK game. Kinda hoping they make it to Switch somehow.
I would say it's 100% because it wasn't a new Metroid. In any other scenario it likely would've been warmly welcomed.

Before Tropical Freeze's reveal Wii U already had a 2D Mario game, an exclusive (at the time) 2D Rayman game and a 2D Yoshi game. The very E3 where TF was first shown also gave us Mario 3D World, another game tailored for fans of linear platformers.
lt's not the consumers fault for expecting more variety from a console's library, especially coming from a developper that became known for creating some of the greatest single player 3D action aventure games of all time.
What am I missing with the bolded?
I'm not interested in more quality platformers(Rayman, Mario, Donkey Kong) not matter how different they are when I could have gotten a Prime game that compares to nothing else on the system. This applied to my Wii U and sure as hell does with my current Switch
He's probably talking about Yoshi's Woolly World, although he's mistaken, that didn't come out before DK: Tropical Freeze but a year after.
I think it's just average, the platforming was too tough too often and the bosses were overly difficult.
It was also because it just looked like yet another Wii HD game, in line with NSMBU, Wii Fit U, and Wii Sports U. People were at least hoping for something more ambitious from Retro.
I mean...those screenshots are from the Nintendo website. He hardly scoured for bad shots. You went so far looking for the absolute worst screenshot of Tropical Freeze to cherrypick that you didn't even realize the one you grabbed was from an unfinished build. Who are you trying to fool, man?
Tropical Freeze. The best 2D platformer ever made. Should have been received like DOOM 2016 was.
Goddamn shame it wasn't a fucking shooter, eh?
The best 2D platformer of all time.

Right. Woolly World released like a year-and-a-half after Tropical Freeze. More if we're only talking NA.

in all fairness ...NOE still has these ancient E3 shots in their official gallery on the game's page.
