Sony's Jim Ryan comments on backwards compatibility: "why would anybody play this?"

They just had a 5 year old game chart on NPD, BC is single handedly responsible for that. So yes it is translating into sales, it also helps lock people into the Xbox ecosystem since they can still play their old games.

You can't just starting championing bc because of an outlier. Say what the game is, Call of duty and I think rdr! Where is FO3 and new vegas? R6: vegas 1&2, oblivion, Dmc, etc!?!

You act like there is no way to play classic games on PS4. There is definitely gems out there still, but MOST of the good shit worth revisiting has been remastered Last gen. And those barely sold when they did the first time. I don't know if you know, but last gen; Dmc collection, Ratchet collection, Sly collection, ico collection, MGS collection, Killzone collection, GOW collection, Resistance collection, hell.. PSN collections in volumes.. plus some of these games have ben given away for free and discounted to hell and back. Tons of ps1 games(which was always topped by the Crash's and FF7) and I think it's safe to say these old games didn't set the world on fire with sales, let alone been actually played to completion.

Bc is a cool feature, but not a make or break one. Jim was clearly referring to how bad the ps1 GT's look in comparison to the new one.
oh, and I forgot about the infamous collection

You know what? I agree with him.

I've never known anyone to watch an old movie again, listen to an old album, read an old book, and certainly not look at old art.

Why should video games be the exception?

outside the art, most people use newer methods to consume their media. most watch dvd or bluray over vhs. same with mp3 or streaming vs vinyl or tape or even cd. and books are being consumed more and more on tablets and phones.

his statement is similar in that regard. why play a dated game when you have an updated one, especially when he is talking about GT when a new one is coming soon(tm). how many people still own and listen to vinyl or tapes or cds? how many watch vhs? how many play games on ps2 still? I would guess the answers are similar.

Jim Ryan probably doesn't realize that people are angry because its not just about PS3 PS2 or PS1 games, but people's faith in Sony to respect their ecosystem enough to care about PS4/Pro to PS5 jumps for example

The current PS2 emulator only gets games up to 1080p and cleans the image slightly. It's not anyway close to what is being done with that PC. You realize his much more power that computer has in CPU alone right?

Yes, I know that.

Doesn't mean that PS can't do the same. Especially since graphics is mostly up to GPU and not CPU.

There it is. By no stretch of the imagination is this going to turn the tide of the current console war, but when the next generation starts its a clean slate, and if there's no BC to lock those PS4 users into the Playstation eco system......

He said all the right things here. But, it still rings a bit hollow to me coming from MS , considering they never officially denounced what they tried to pull with Xbox One's launch.

Incidentally, all I wanna do now is replay Parasite Eve, and get around to giving PE2 a proper go.

actions speak louder than words and MS did a damn good job of righting the ship after that shit show

I'd use it a lot if they implemented something like Xbox. I have no interest in the shower of shit they've offers so far, especially because it's over priced cos trophies lol.

Backwards compatibility is not a small feature, and it is convenient. Jim should have kept quiet, though I do mostly agree with him.

But it's not something that I really use. I think most people are in the same boat. The only instance where BC was a big deal for was PS2, because I was entering Sony's ecosystem for the first time.

I primarily played a lot of PS1 RPGs, which I am very thankful for. I moved on fairly quickly and played PS2 non-stop. Even on Nintendo DS Lite and 3DS, I barely play games from the previous generation.

Gamers want new hardware to play new games, and that's where the most effort goes to. Xbox One's backwards compatibility is not a system seller, and I would easily choose PS4 and Switch (both lacking BC) over it.

Is arrogant Sony back? Like, thats the most arrogant thing i heard from their PR in a long ass time.
I mean they probably think if Nintendo can charge for old games so can we, and they are not wrong... But asking "why would you want old games?" while selling them at the same time is truly dumb.

Irony since XB1 did not launch with it. BC was literally the only big thing they could do to champion XB1 and it is a non factor for sales.
I don't care what the Xbox launched with or without. Does it do it now? It does. There isn't any irony when they do it and their competitor doesn't. Especially after their competitor just implied that it's something no one actually wants.

Haven't you guys realized that there are no generations anymore?

If you think about it some more I would be surprised not to see it reposted with a friend face following it. No more console generations is going to be as pro consumers as digital downloads from big publishers/console makers have been... aka benefiting mostly them only and few token gestures here and there to make the bitter pill easier to swallow... I still think PS5 will mark a new generation for Sony (BC, but with software that is designed to run on PS5 and PS5 alone).

This seems like the time an executive said psn users couldn't change their ids due to it enabling people to troll without consequences.

Seriously, why would you continue to support PlayStation Now, Ps2 Classics and remasters on the platform if people weren't buying into them?

What OG XBOX games are people playing on the XBOX ONE?

Oh wow

I've always said ps5 is guaranteed to have BC but with comments like this still being said I'm beginning to think maybe not. Would be crazy if not considering the user base Sony has gotten this gen

How will there be no generations? I'm pretty sure a PlayStation will come to exist that supports games that won't run on a base PS4 anymore. That's a new generation in my book.

If that system doesn't support PS4 software as well though I'll be very disappointed. Sony's attitude here tells me I'm likely better on platforms that take it seriously.

That's right! As a forward thinking person, I consume new media and new media only. I would burn my extensive game and movie collection, but that would require looking at the packaging and touching it.

Thank you for your gems of wisdom, Jim Ryan. Please spearhead any and all efforts to remove features people think they want from future Sony consoles. They're wrong, Jim Ryan. They're wrong.

Personally, I never found an appeal for BC.

I played all those previous games. I currently have so much to play and a huge backlog of games. I can't understand how some people have the time to go back to previous games to play them again.

I agree that his wording would have been more elegant, but I do agree with the gist of it. There are a ton of games coming out on PS4 and the future looks bright. For me at least, I have quite enough of games cuurently to not even consider replaying old games.

As someone who didn't grow up on PS1 and PS2 (but a friend and cousin had them but didn't buy much), I'd love to have BC and an actual decent clip of classic titles on the platform. I and many have complained about Nintendo and their trickle of VC titles, but Sony feels so much worse in this regard.

I'd absolutely play BC stuff.

People always make a big deal about backwards compatibility. And while there are games that this might appeal in mass to encourage sales like Black Ops or GTA.....I just don't think it matters much.

I'm not saying no one plays old games. I'm just saying it's a small percentile.

I know probably 30 friends and coworkers with XOnes and PS4's and I know for a fact I'm the only one of them that ever plays old gen games.

really? you can't understand how some people have time to go back to previous games to play them again?

it's exceedingly simple to understand if you, like, think about it for maybe a second

I've literally been saying this for years!

Yet, people were giving Sony the benefit of the doubt. In an age where digital storefronts exist, how the hell is it acceptable that a platform holder doesn't give a shit about preserving something resembling an ecosystem?

Sony, I like your games, so let me play them on new hardware.

You've played every game from the beginning of gaming to 2013? A lot of Backwards Compatibility isn't replaying games, it's playing them for the first time.

I'm far more likely to enjoy a game from 10-20 years ago than I am one made today, so it's especially nice to have easy access to older titles.

I have no desire to dip into any of the PS1/PS2 classics. I wouldn't mind having more PS3 games available

But if they don't have PS4 games compatible with PS5, that'll be pretty much inexcusable.

Don't do this to me, Jim. No BC on PS5 would be indefensible.

I hope the PS5 can at least do BC with PS4, but then Sony has announced PS Now with PS4 game streaming. Please Sony whatever it is you do with PS5, just make sure it does native bckwards compatibility with PS4 library!
