Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

I never understand Neogaf, you spend this much on headphones and a pair of jeans, but when it's for a 6 teraflop games console, with 10gb ram and a 4k blu-ray drive, the sky has fallen in.

Given that this is a higher tier xbox to compliment the current system (which is getting a $50 cut at E3), I don't understand how anybody thought this would be priced hyper aggressively.

The current Xbox might as well not exist at this point.

It’s gettting it’s ass handed to it with little to sway the tide. This is the reboot for Xbox. It has to be.

Weirdly it took this for me to actually be excited for the show, think I'll stay up and watch it now, instead of just catching up on it tomorrow.

You win this round Spencer!

The difference being that the whole "Doritos Pope" debacle was an unintended consequence of the situation. Beyond the meme-worthy resolution of the affair, the marketing deal couldn't have been any different from any other marketing deal in existence.

Now, if Keighley has willingly entered a deal by which he claims something he knows isn't true just so Microsoft can have a big "gotcha!" moment on stage... Man, that's a shitty way to dynamite your credibility. Next time he has some juicy insider info nobody will believe him.

So, yeah. I don't think this is a PR stunt, especially considering Microsoft has stated in the past that they are aiming for a "premium product". That, or Keighley is a souless mercenary who would sell his credibility in a heartbeat... which I don't think he is.
The thing is, we're talking about one of the most respected journalist here. If he knew the real price, he would say/leak shit. The fact that hes allowing himself to "leak" this is shady as fuck.
Oh and his wording ("Unless something changes today")... you just its bullshit.

^ Makes sense. Has to be a controlled leak.

Watch them see the reaction to this and not even announce a price at all during the conference so they can scramble to get a backup plan in place.

Microsoft does not have the current reputation or marketshare to demand that type of pricing. This isn't fanboyism but if they where still riding on the coattails of the 360 massive success then sure, I can see people buying it.

This late in the game with such a strong Lineup from ps4, the accessibility of PC gaming and the fact that Xbox play anywhere exists for their first party games......these are all MASSIVE issues for Scorpio.

Maybe it's a temporary sale MS will have. They love their "temporary" sales. Tell people it's $499 rrp but throughout E3 and through Fall 2017 you can preorder/buy for the low low price of just $399 :p

Either this is a terrible ploy to make people think it's a higher price, then say it's $400

Or prayers to the Xbox division.

I just cant see this thing doing well in EU if its above 399. It will be a hard sell when PlayStation is so strong.

I hope for Geoff's sake he's right. People won't forget this if he's wrong.

Emotions are running high since Scorpio being hyped as the savior for the brand.

So, let me get this straight...

people in here actually think that

- 10% more CPU Power
- 50% more GPU Power
- 50% more RAM
- 50% more Bandwidth
- UHD Blu-ray instead of a regular Drive

in comparison to a PS4 Pro will come at no extra cost whatsoever?

LOL.

It will be 399. It has to be.

Anything higher is suicide. They are already selling the XB1 BUNDLED WITH A GAME for 250.

The Scorpio hardware doesnt sound that expensive unless they are gonna announce a surprise hardware change here
Triple the power, double the price

I'll add that at $499, the Scorpio would be $150 more than a PS4 Pro and MS will NOT want that, regardless of the specs.

99% sure it's going to be $399.

I recall a lot of people covering E3 in 2013 were certain PS4 would be $499 24 hours before it was surprisingly announced at $399. The euphoria over that price was significant. Curious if MS is trying to replicate that euphoria today or are prepping people so they aren't disappointed.

If MS are involved in this leak, I'd go for the latter. If it were the former, they would have been teasing $499 months ago. The price has probably been locked down since late 2015. At least the target price.

It's going to be suicide launching at $499. They'll need to keep this price for at least 12 months before dropping it and I don't see how they would acquire the scale at 499 to be able to drop it without making a loss. I find 499 hard to believe. Harder to believe than 599 for the PS3. Sony were coming off the back of the most successful console on history.

I'm going with €449

At $499 they'd better sell it as a new console with enhanced backwards compatability and the opportunity for exclusive games.

$499 when its fate is irrevocably tied to the Xbox One is a particularly unappealing prospect.

To those thinking this is staged:

What does Keighley have to gain by doing this assuming it's not some MS ploy?

If it is an MS ploy... why? Why rile everyone up when they can just announce $399 at their conference and get the same amount of cheers?
For the question: What does Keighley gain : $$$

Also, his reaction afterwards: 'wow only 399$ ! Rehearsal said 499! MS is awesome! $$$

I think it's a fair price.
Scorpio is well positioned to steal some marketshare from Sony.

Nah it's not going to do that. People should prepare themselves for MS to be in the same position even after this thing releases.

And it definitely won't steal any marketshare at that price.

$499 would be consistent with what Phil Spencer has said about the Scorpio price all along:

"I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we're building that for is the premium gaming customer," Spencer said. "The person who buys the majority of the games, the person who's playing the most games, spending the most hours, spending the most dollars. It's like our Elite controller. I call that a premium controller."

"I'm not trying to scare anybody on the price. We're going to come out on a price that we think is fair for the product that we build and the customers will tell us as they always do. I call it premium because I don't want people to get confused that somehow Scorpio is the thing that is going to take over the Xbox line."

Wonder if the rx480 shortage will have any effent on the consoles. Different chips but will the resources be drained for more 500 series cards.
