Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

As a person who has always preferred PlayStation consoles, I was willing to drop $400 for Scorpio's power increase. $500 is too much for me and likely many others. When you think about demographics and how fucked the economy is right now, $500 is just too much for most 18-30 year-olds. Maybe I'm just poor, though lol

I never understand Neogaf, you spend this much on headphones and a pair of jeans, but when it's for a 6 teraflop games console, with 10gb ram and a 4k blu-ray drive, the sky has fallen in.

Given that this is a higher tier xbox to compliment the current system (which is getting a $50 cut at E3), I don't understand how anybody thought this would be priced hyper aggressively.

i buy earbuds for less than 10 bucks and buy my jeans at walmart. U DONT KNOW ME

So, let me get this straight...

people in here actually think that

- 10% more CPU Power
- 50% more GPU Power
- 50% more RAM
- 50% more Bandwidth
- UHD Blu-ray instead of a regular Drive

will come at no extra cost whatsoever?

Yes, because it is 12 months later.

Microsoft surprised me with the high pricing of the new Surface line here in the UK they're higher than I expected. I can see them doing the same with Scorpio unfortunately.

Living in the shadow of Amaz
I was expecting $600.

It's still a prohibitive price that makes the thing completely irrelevant to 99% of the populace, as expected.

It's surreal that anyone expected less than this.

:l.

Then the thing better come with the Elite Controller and/or a game to make the price worth it. Sure, it's more powerful but many can play the Xbox One line up already via released systems now at a much lower price.

Unless it is has exclusive games (which would only piss people off), then I see many issues regarding how it sells.

But hey, many gamers buy expensive high-end PC's often. So...if this is like that, I can see it working.

Scorpio is not intended to be the mass market share xbox product. Phil has said this multiple times. Most of the awful takes in this thread get this fundamental issue wrong. Essentially, If they can call it DOA, then they won't feel bad for not buying one.

Classic gaf overreaction in here.

To be fair, we'd like to think that Geoff Keighley wouldn't be making such a weighty claim in public without some sort of official confirmation from Microsoft.

I refuse to believe that they need to "test the waters" and "gauge reaction" for a $500 price tag. They have to know it's going to cause a negative reaction without needing any testing.

This is a good point many are forgetting. Or they're going the Pro is way overpriced route to justify $399 scorp.

There is a likely possibility that Sony drops the PS4 and PS4 Pro prices to $199 and $299. If true, it will further complicate Microsoft's attempt at selling something at $499. While the hardware might be beefy on paper, it will ultimately be the games that sell it and their track record for first party hits this gen have been spotty. The one hope is that it includes a game or games to soften the price point but IMO this hardware is dead on arrival at that price point.

I don't see where the surprise is for this machine. It's suppose to be more powerful the the PS4 and that machine is $400. Common sense would dictate that this machine would be more expensive with it having more powerful tech in it. If you want a premium console like this, you're gonna have to pay more for it.

Is €499 really fucking worth 4K graphics on your TV? Seriously? And it'll be limited to Xbox One games. PC gamers have no reason at all to jump ship.

My guess is that PC gamers won't have to jump ship at all, because MS will introduce the "Xbox 10 S" for PC which will allow every PC owner to get the full Xbox One experience. In that scenario MS would allow third party hardware manufacturers to build their own Xbox 10 S" boxes with different videocard specifications. That way MS can compete with both Steam and Playstation at the same time and it will boost the use of the Windows store, Universal Windows Applications and Windows 10. MS could even compete with the Nintendo Switch if a third party would develop a portable Xbox compatible device.

Why are people suddenly expecting it to be $399? They've been saying since the reveal that it will be a premium product with a premium price point, which actually makes $499 a surprisingly low price to me. I won't be buying one since I'm pretty much stuck on PlayStation as my primary system whether I like it or not and I already own an XB1S, but I don't think $499 is that unreasonable.

That said, I really hope MS aren't banking on this to get them out of their current predicament...

this is not suddenly
the price range was always $399 - $499
and now people will be disappointed it's on the high end

pretty easy

Goeff doesn't leak shit, he's dependant on these publishers working with him. If anything this is a marketing stunt where it will cost 400 and some people who listened to Goeff are now positively surprised. The fact he says "unless something changed" just means that people can't get mad at him for announing a false price and he can go all: "OH WOW DIDN'T EXPECT THIS!"

In this timeline of the current generation, and with the position Xbox is in compared to other consoles, hell to the no they will go with a 499 price tag.

Damn, was hoping they could hit $399 as that would be much better for them in the market.

I just don't see how this will make a change for them in the market. The faithful will buy it sure but don't see this increasing their market share and getting more people into their ecosystem.

Struggling to see the main goal of this tbh...

At $499 they'd better sell it as a new console with enhanced backwards compatability and the opportunity for exclusive games.

$499 when its fate is irrevocably tied to the Xbox One is a particularly unappealing prospect.

Yeah that's for sure. I'm thinking it's going to be a situation where the last system can always run the current systems games, and the scorpio is very much still a Xbox One product.

I mean I've always said that but I think that justifies the price to people who care about Xbox.

Yep.

If 499 is a lot for you, this console wasn't built for you. Simple as that.

It's a premium console. Always has been.

One thing has become clear over the last few days...

A lot of people have made this console a lot of things that it is not. If you are disappointed you only have yourself to blame.

No they think it won't be a success with that extra cost much like the PS3 originally.

I'll add that at $499, the Scorpio would be $150 more than a PS4 Pro and MS will NOT want that, regardless of the specs.

99% sure it's going to be $399.

There's a difference between what they or you want and what hardware components + R&D cost in order to stay somewhat profitable.

I always expected $500 based on how much they've talked up the pure technological muscle of this thing. I doubt they could deliverable a worthwhile difference over the PS4 Pro for $400 without taking a substantial loss.

Whether $500 is worth it entirely depends on the software.

$499 and $599 versions I believe

Yeah, it was $499 for the 20 gig and $599 for the 60 gig which had other bonuses (for the time) like card readers, more USB ports, and support for SACD's.

The Xbox 360 had a $299 SKU but it had zero storage for saves (no hard drive or anything) and only a regular DVD drive, and I guess the then-$49 XBL yearly subs helped keep the cost down too.

A big part of the initial PS3 cost was having PS2 hardware crammed in it which is why they dropped support for PS2 games very quickly in later production runs of the PS3.

I've been saying that since forever. Guess the responses I got.
People always believe "winning the race" is more important than a healthy business, which is not the case. This gen's race is over. Sell subscriptions, sell your most dedicated fan base pricier-than-usual stuff (first the Elite Controller, now Scorpio) and move on.
Some guys dreams Scorpio will change the situation and it make MA the market leader.

MS knows that is impossible this gen so they will focus:

- Sell a profitable premium product.
- instead increase userbase they want to make most money possible from their actual fans.
- Sells more games and services for that actual userbase.

Of course the userbase will increase over the time but at at very slow pace like XB1 did until now.

Scorpio is primary an upgrade device for actual userbase and not a machine for new buyers (new buyers will choose S or Slim).

I have $100 in Microsoft Store cards from when I bought my Vive on Black Friday, so $399 for me!

More seriously, can we expect to hear anything about the XB1 trade in program for it? I seem to remember them saying they would have one. If I can end up with like $125-150 for my XB1 that makes it a Day one for me.

The world economy is still in tatters from the recession. 500 is a lot in this market considering their position

Like, if that's the price, I'd rather sit tight for a couple of years and spend the money on whatever a PlayStation 5 will be, considering this is just an extension of the current generation.

Good night Scorpio if that thing is $499. Sony will be undercutting them by default and still outsell MS consoles 2 to 1, not even including the international sales factor.

I'm jumping on the fake train. At $499 it wont sell, and if it doesn't sell why would any developer spend extra time making their games 4k?

It really doesn't make sense for Microsoft.
