Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

People criticized the PS4 Pro for not being a big enough upgrade, and now they're ganging up on the Scorpio for actually making a big leap?

You cant have it both ways, im astonished at how surprised people are at this. They've said for a year now that its a premium console, it was never going to be cheap.

499? Welp, guess it'll be relegated to their existing hardcore fans mostly then, mainstream is still too busy with the more popular and cheaper PS4, and 4K isn't widespread enough for that selling point to push people towards it.

theory: microsoft told geoff to tweet that price to gauge the reception

therefore if we react overwhelmingly negative they will get on stage and instead say (something less than $499)

ahem. $499, fuck that

The 399 dream is dead.
If confirmed by multiple sources, those same sources would all have said it is possible the price can change today because that is what he is reporting in addition to the price.

$499 means that they really don't care about how many of their premium boxes they sell. I will certainly be getting one, and it's probably a fair price for what you are getting, but it is definitely not a competitive price this fall when the pro will likely be minimum $100 less and maybe even less with the many bundles and deals this fall + the spread between PS4 Slim and Base XBO S will be enormous.

I'm on #teamfake. I just don't see why Geoff would get out there now and say this. I feel like we're being played like a damn fiddle

If it comes with an elite controller 499 is perfect tbh.

I don't think it's coming with the elite controller.

If it does, it's going to be a barebones elite controllers with a separate purchase for the additional sticks etc. Just to gouge the userbase

$499 does actually sound quite reasonable considering the price of the Pro and the power in Scorpio.

Wonder what that will be in the UK - £430? I think thats the price X1 launched at here so I'd pay £430 for a Scorpio

You mean he would never overhype things like an award show with announcements or so, right? Because he has a professional reputation to lose?

This is a terrible price if they want to compete with Sony and what will likely be a $299 PS4 Pro during the holiday season. I certainly hope it isn't true.

Was thinking it would be more than PS4 Pro, so $499 wouldn't be a huge surprise to me. They seem to be really putting a lot of faith in the thing selling, but I'm not sure where the market for it is. Guess we'll see.

Lol people saying you can't charge 499 for a mid generation upgrade.

The entire selling point and a marketing of the Scorpio is that it's a niche product. They aren't trying to sell 30 million of them.

They don't. Sony doesn't either. The XBox One S and PS4 are always going to be the biggest money makers. Forever.

Companies skim profit from early adopters. That's how business works. At a later point you drop the price to get those that held out. MS and Sony want to be Apple.

I will be preordering this console as I did the Vita, the PS4 Pro, etc, but I have a hard time seeing it succeeding.

I was wrong on the Switch, so what do I know?

Unless the Scorpio has the second coming of BotW, this shit ain't going to fly.

I think its too much to pay for a mid to late gen refresh. If we were starting a new generation, then maybe I could see that price tag.

I think if you're not brand loyal and want a high end console, it makes a helluva lot more sense to get a PS4Pro and ride it out until the end of this generation.

If they can afford to, I would include a free year of Xbox Live Gold or that Xbox Gamepass service. That might change the conversation for some people.

Not that surprised, it's for a certain demographic so why not make profit knowing it won't change anything.

Yeah he's just preemtive damage controlling himself there. If he REALLY thought it was $499, he's not gonna say "unleses something changes today". Prices don't change in the matter of hours and ESPECIALLY not by $100

But he kills his reputation by even sending out that tweet if it's $399. Then he's "An MS Payroll shill who's just cashing checks to be part of their marketing machine". There's no win for him if it's really $399.

I also don't see MS feeding him bad info to make them look better. There are a thousand gaming journos who would sell their soul to be a marketing mouthpiece for them.

Where are you guys getting that Pro is getting a price drop? Bundles and deals are going to be the Slim for awhile.

I don't understand how people don't get this.

sounds like artificial hype technique to watch the conference, when they announce it for $399 everyone will be happy. right now $399 doesn't generate much hype or excitement.

Sure, $500 is a fine price if an Elite controller is packed in... except for people like me that don't need a second elite controller. But that's fine as long as there's a "Core Edition" SKU with no controller for $399.

Of course you do when you feel it might soften the blow. No matter what they show at the conference, the talk was going to be the price, it's still going to be talked a lot if that is indeed the price, but they might be trying to adjust the expectations a little before.
But you created the blow beforehand now. The expectations have never been a cheap console.

There is zero reason for Geoff to damage his credibility with this. The MS "paycheck" to be a part of a marketing stunt would never be worth it.
