Super Mario Odyssey trailer (October 27th)

Yeah I wouldn't worry about progression in this game. It's likely that the moon count required for beating get the game will be very high since the number of total moons should be really high too, and a certain number of grand moons will be required probably. And it seems like the path to various grand moons will lead you through several main objectives. So you'll probably have to engage with a lot of main content and side content, making the game suitably robust.

I must say I'm going to be upset if the theme song doesn't get used in the US commercials. Still no idea why NoA has such an aversion to using game music in their ads.

When you enter a world, the game shows you what your main mission is, just like 64/sunshine/galaxy. The difference is, you can get a bunch of "side quest" moons in between main ones, and nothing kicks you out of the level. Also, when you do complete a main mission, the next main mission is unlocked and a cutscenes gives you an idea of where to go. It's basically exactly like sunshine/galaxy, except they just appear one after the other, and you never leave the world.

And moons you get from completing main missions give you a more celebratory "get" scene.
9h ok, gotcha.

I 'm always a Mario enthusiast but this game's art direction feels dull, uninteresting and even ugly (just look at the grass texture). It's trying to be realistic, when the system capabilities clearly don't allow that.

Just look at the Mario Galaxy shots from Dolphin, they are look alive and cheerful, that game had great art and sound. I hope Oddysey will will get better in the graphics department when it releases.

But Mario Galaxy also had "realistic" textures? The lava/gunk at that fire octopus boss? The dirt layers in that very screenshot? Plus it looks a lot uglier in its actual resolution. Why compare 1080p upscaled shots to a game that isn't even out yet?

I am getting more and more interested in this game (except for the butt ugly City), but i really wish that Nintendo goes for a Switch Pro or something because the IQ in several Switch games surely could be better. And they should implement an Achievements type of system because personally speaking... if a game doesn't have any sort of Trophies/Achievements i find it hard to get interested. One of the main reasons i haven't bought a Switch just yet.

I have to agree. Furthermore, the worlds seem empty and void of anything interesting to explore.

I thought so too until I saw Treehouse plays. It feels like there's always something behind every corner. Then again it's clearly not Galaxy/3D "course" series where every inch is designed as a platforming element.

We heard these same worries/complaints before Breath of the Wild and that was the best Zelda game in 20 years.

I'm putting my faith in Nintendo to deliver here.

This is patently false. There's stuff to do everywhere and the gameplay scenarios look extremely varied.

This is really shaping up to be another BotW, down to the supposed flaws that actually don't exist if you watch more than 2 minutes of footage.

I agree. There's stuff to do. What people want every square inch filled with something?

The "barren-ness" complaint is weird, since the barren-ness people are describing feel more like the plains found in say, Bob-Omb Battlefield in 64.

The 2D Mario platformer seamlessly built into some of the walls in the game is absolutely incredible. Nintendo are on another level. It even has the original sounds and stuff.

I think the biggest thing is that it still appears to be 720p native in docked and not 900 or 1080 like Splatoon 2 is

Huge game + 60fps = you're not getting above 720p unless Nintendo really are gods at what they do.

Yet again we didn't know about Splatoon 2's resolution bump until a month before launch so who knows.

If Galaxy follows the same pattern as Zelda pre-release criticism ("The world is empty, Nintendo can't make an open world game,") then I am really fucking excited the same people seem to be down on it.

We haven't seen the same game then because Odyssey looks the fucking opposite of what you just described. :O

I believe what they mean is that while Zelda makes a good open world game Mario's tight focused level designs might not as much geared towards the open world concept. Odyessy's environments look fairly bland until you actually get into the levels. that said the idea of multiple Mario 64 open worlds is nice. I was expecting giant platforming challenge worlds not flat surfaces that lead easily to more complex challenges. But hey it might work.

It's the density argument from BOTW all over again. Having some emptiness in a sandbox open world is ok and even necessary.

Most people's fears about SMG were relieved by the time the second trailer was released, without even trying out the demos. SMO on the other hand, has five months left before it's out.

I remember in the treehouse footage the guy playing said he was surprised by the total number of moons (as in it was a lot).

Which would be interesting, meaning it may hew closer to something like Banjo Kazooie and other collect-a-thons, more-so than Mario 64 did at least.

Nintendo fans sure are consistent in what they want and what they like and hence a reliable measurement of pre-launch satisfaction.

They said they wanted to fill it with moons so people could accomplish something even in small play sessions, like waiting for the bus etc.

Its such a clever way to do 2d sections as opposed to 2.5d stuff that never feel quite right

Espescially when it comes to a mainline Mario, that fanbase been split for ages now, with all sides being vocal in their disdain for the specific types of Mario games not the one they love.

...Ugly? It is "trying" (in the most loose sense of the word) to be realistic, but that's because it depends on the area. The desert level is pretty cartoony. The whole point of the game is Mario travelling to different places that might clash with what we usually see about him, down to art style, the fact that you think it looks like it does because the Switch can't handle it is very weird and not even true. You liking it or not is another tale, but the art direction has been pretty fantastic and very consistent from what was shown.

I have to agree. Furthermore, the worlds seem empty and void of anything interesting to explore.

This is Zelda all over again. I guess that's good because everyone will be wrong yet again

That's the thing, I strongly disagree with that. I think every inch looks alive and interesting and a little space here and there only adds to the feeling of this being a big world to explore. Mario has some really fast moves in Odyssey (like rolling) so traversal seems to be fun as hell. Someone mentioned the Mario fanbase being split in two. I think that's true. There's no recipe for a good Mario game. Let's see some negatives I've seen in the last couple of years:

Mario Galaxy - "too linear, not enough platforming, too easy"
Mario 3D World - "too bland, not enough exploration, too safe"

These games are the best in their genre and MO will manage to top them, I'm sure.
