A lot of people were saying experience, but it's really not that, Punk have been in form on the big stage so many times, and even while losing he maintained his composure. Never on a stage as big as this but that's the case for Tokido too.

Dude just lost to Tokido 10-0 before EVO, he knew Tokido had his number. If anything, it's Tokido who choked in their top-16 game.

EVO experience is completely different than a major experience.

How many times had ChrisG choked at EVO but easily won every other major before finally winning an EVO? The EVO nerves are crazy man, it can get the best of players.

Plus this is SFV at Mandalay Bay with peak crowd and you have to carry the back of a whole country and decades worth of hopes and dreams on your shoulders. It's not an easy task whatsoever.

Edit: and character loyalty and being one of the best are not independent. No one would argue that Fuudo, Itazan, Haitani, Bonchan, etc. are anything aside from top players because they use one character.

Punk wasn't dropping combos, making bad decisions or chocking through the whole set! Hell, Tokoido had more chocks in that grand final!

Tokido was indeed all over the place this year, which makes this result even more surprising.

It's because he would have easily lost to those he met in the loser brackets . But not today , today he was a different man . I've been watching him ever since early SF4 days and this was his most clutch performance ever . His anti-air , confirms and combo awareness were all exceeding his normal self , truly in Satsui no Hado mode .

If a new player is able to win several majors, get second at Evo, etc they are more than likely going to be able to do well for a long time as long as they stay on their grind.
Edit: He was able to go from a high level online warrior to a contender for best player in the world in about a year. That shows immense skill.

If i remember right did Infiltration reign not last a good while in both SFIV and SFV ?
Still for SFIV by the time Infiltration reign came we already had a few monster .
In SFV it seem people do really good and after a while they lose it .
I also expect season 3 to shake things up again .

I've noticed that too. SFV has players who are incredibly consistent (more so than SF4) like they have the game figured out. Then all of a sudden they lose it. I think Fuudo is one of the only players that has not adhered to that trend. Tokido was like that in season 1, but maybe him not having as good of a character as S1 Ryu is the cause of his inconsistency of S2. Bonchan was ass for the longest time and then something clicked. Snake was ass and then something clicked. Daigo was ass, something clicked, and now that S2 is here he's back to being ass. Gamerbee the same as Daigo.

Infil is the same. Du was the same. Xiaohai is the same. I guess Xian isn't like the trend, but that's also due to going from picking a shit character to a good character.

It was complete dominance in 2012. He basically never lost that year IIRC, except for da gawd Kbrad. Then in 2013 he had cracks and the reign was ended by Daigo stealing his soul in the FT10 where he won 10-2 I feel.

I'm very happy for Tokido. Guy deserved it all the way. And after the casual sets I don't think Punk choked at all, Tokido is just better at this moment.

I'm especially disappointed by the US players, I expected a much more stronger presence in Top 8 with all the "Japan ain't nothing without the arcade" talk all this year. Without Punk this would have been an embarrassment.

Yep. I'm honestly fine with either 1v1, 3v3 or 5v5. The latter can be extremely good but usually, the team who is expected to win, wins. 3v3 is a bit more dynamic in that regard but has a lower hype ceiling.

Aren't arcades declining over there? Mind you they're still not in a bad position, but it's something to keep in mind. I wouldn't be surprised that they were also afraid that some other choices would be seen as non western viewer friendly and so avoided them.

Just finished the SFV top 8. Amazing stuff! I actually just started watching competitive SFV at the end of 2016 so this was the first time I saw EVO. And I realized just how much bigger it is than anything else. Even Punk was taking it seriously and I was sure he was gonna win it. That collapse was something else, happy for Tokido but I feel kind of bad for Punk. I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of himself though.

Not sure how games like that not being in the main line up is surprising. Games like VF5, 3rd Strike are ancient and mostly only really alive in Japan. The same goes for the Gundam games, pretty much Japan only.

You can expect stuff like this to be side tournaments but not the main line up.

Every game in the main line up is 'current' and less than 2 years old (aside from T7 but that's a different matter).

3S still has its tournies but the big sponsored ones are only about newer games.

Unlike tournies in the west, Japanese ones that aren't sponsored are only for bragging rights and not for money. Probably due to the gambling laws.
