Lichtspeer devs: Nintendo working on Switch achievement system

I don't care if they add them or not. Can be fun to have, but mostly I'm just ignoring them. Those who said they use them as a log is in line with how I use them.

I like the way Xbox does it where it's essentially a high score, but I've never been fond of the way Sony does it with trophies. If they do add achievements I'd prefer it to be more of an xbox style .

Now wondering if they might be patched into already released Switch games. Could only imagine what kinds of crazy requirements Nintendo could come up with for Breath of the Wild achievements.

Of course there would be one for defeating Ganon straight after getting off the Great Plateau. On hard mode.

Personally I like the time and numbers played stats more to document my investment in a game.

One possibility would be to create a sort of game report page. Time investment, frequency of play etc should be stats independently of achievements. The actual achievements should not be tied to these stats.

That way you could document both achievements and engagement, without having to design idiotic achievements just so people fill some ridiculous check box.

the 3DS does exactly this, you can go and check your stats for every single game, time played, what days you played, when you first played it, etc It's a nice addition and I enjoy putting my game icons in the order I played the games but it's not engaging in the least, it's just stats.

one kind of middle ground for both trophy lovers and haters would be something like Metroid prime, it had a % which would require you to get missiles, lore, power-ups (everything) and getting that percent up would unlock certain things (I forgot what exactly). It's non-intrusive but it's there to keep record of what you've done and what you could still do in a game.

the completionist/trophy hunter should feel rewarded with that "100%" on the screen

the non-completionist should feel motivated to keep searching for stuff in the game by seeing that nasty "78%" on the screen

I like achievements so I'm happy with this. That being said, Nintendo really did a soft launch with the Switch, at least regarding everything online related.

Big fan of achievements, definitely want them on Switch. For me they're actually a (minor, but still) selling point in terms of deciding whether I want to buy a game on Steam or, say, GOG. I like having a system-wide and consistent achievement system so I can very easily go through the entirety of my library and see all my accomplishments across all games on the platform.

I dont care about trophies, but a lot of gamers do. Hopefully is not halfassed. My guess is it will be available with the official launch of Nintendo Online service via the mobile app

So long as it's not just a tick like crap on PS4/XBO and more cosmetic bonuses, additional bonuses and the like.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I always thought it would have been a good idea to tie them to Miiverse stamps, but that's obviously not going to happen now.

Maybe once they get their OS themes up and running they can award you badges like on the 3DS.

I have a feeling that this Achievement system will have a mini-game in itself, probably for purchasing costumes or themes to one's achievement profile or something.

I don't care for acheevos but I would not be against Nintendo implementing them. MP being the sole exception, nothing worse than teammates trying to get some stupid epeen points instead of contributing.

Anyways, how's the game? Thought about getting it, looked like it could be fun in co op.

The 3DS activity log is awesome, I really don't understand why it didn't become a standard feature in the next Nintendo hardware. WiiU's one was ridiculous and Switch's... Well...

Well hopefully they find a way of making them interesting. I can’t remember the last time I even looked at them on a PS4 game I’m playing - the only reminder I have that they exist is when I happen to unlock one, which is usually just by doing a bit of the story. Those aren’t very interesting.

Are we sure it's not just a dev who read NeoGAF and saw one of the "My Nintendo is going to be Nintendo's achievement system for Switch" posts? oO

Doesn't sound to be anything anyway:

All of a sudden Nintendo fans like trophies.

Embarrassing stuff. There's gotta be a competition here between you, Metacabwhatever and Living the Dream on who can make themselves look like the best platform warrior because no way can you all be seriously trying to prove something here.

Especially when your claims don't even have quotes to back them up. It's like come on what even? What even...

Isn't there a rumor of a Nintendo Direct coming soon? Wonder if we'll get some more info about this during that Direct.

Themes and achievements!

I thought Nintendo were against them and they probably want more profit with those toy things than putting unlock bonuses behind achievements.

Personally I only care about one stat, is how much of the story mode I've finished.

I know a lot of people are into trophies/achievements so why not. If it brings in more people even better.

What I hope for is a trophy display like in Smash Bros. Wii U. That was nice. But I wouldn't expect third-parties to create 3D models just for that, unfortunately.

If this means we can get a system-wide rankings system I'm all for it. Taking a screenshot and posting that on Miiverse for the NSMBU highscores was su dumb.

Would be a big deal if true, huge if it extends to virtual console as well. Baffling if they were working on it and didn't have it ready for launch, I feel a system like this should have been a day 1 priority.

As long as they can come up with something new, because both the Xbox and PS systems are dumb in their own ways and have so far made me happy that Nintendo have stayed clear of 'achievements'.

As long as Nintendo one ups the competition by allowing users to opt out entirely, I say great.

If they can't come up with something good, this would be a good option too.

never left the stone age
it'd be great for those who wanted it on Nintendo platforms

as long as it's not obtrusive it's all cool with me

wish miiverse came over too tho..rip

I'm sure something will replace Miiverse, somehow, why else would they bother including Miis?

A pretty Nintendo way of doing things would be some kind of points reward system where you could themes, avatars or backgrounds for your Switch.

You know, I always find it weird that people care so much for achievements, I don't find anything special there.
What I find stranger are the people complainjng about a system like this. I really need someone to explain to me how achievements deter the value or enjoyment of the game.

To put it into perspective, it's like someone saying they liked the Switch less because it has a neon version. It makes no sense to me.

Is there anything you want Nintendo to bring to the table that Microsoft or Sony don't already?.

I've said a few times in the past, although I don't see it that likely now due to the death of MiiVerse: I always thought expanding the 'stamps' concept to something system-wide would be great, so you'd 'win' stamps to go into a system-wide toolkit that could be mixed-and-matched to make a MiiVerse post. That's something that's trivial to offer as a reward, but is an actual reward that has a purpose beyond an icon on a table.

While MiiVerse is on the way out, I do wonder if the whole Badge Arcade concept could reappear for Switch, and if that might benefit from a similar integration with game rewards.

Wepcome to the mid 00s Nintendo!!

No but eh, stopped caring about those things years ago. Nice for the ones who like this sort of stuff though.

It doesn't make a bit of difference to me, but I'm happy for everybody that wants it. Granted, if I had to platinum a Mario game I would be all aboard since I 100% them anyway.

Whatever they do, I hope it can be turned off on day one.

Nice. BotW is actually perfect for achievements.
Yeah, the one thing that was missing from the game was a notification popping up when I killed an arbitrary number of enemies or defeated a Divine Beast boss.

Finally... Took em long enough. Now here's me hoping they release it until the end of the year when I plan to get the Switch so I can play Zelda with cheevos the first time.
