I've been thinking about what's "missing" on the SNES Classic. Third party games need not apply, because obviously there are additional financial considerations there, and it's not super obvious those would have ever been on the cards.
So here's a list of US-published Nintendo first party games that did NOT make it on SNES Classic:
Missing:
Pilotwings, Super Tennis, Super Soccer (in JPN SFC Mini Classic but not the US SNES Classic), Super Play Action Football, Vegas Stakes, Super Mario All-Stars, Wario's Woods, Uniracers, Kirby Avalanche, Stunt Race FX, DKC2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, DKC3
Licensed:
SimCity, NCAA Basketball, NHL Stanley Cup, Ken Griffey Jr, Tetris & Dr. Mario, Tetris Attack, Ken Griffey Jr. 2,
Technical / Peripheral issues:
Technical limitations: Super Scope 6, Mario Paint, Battle Clash, Yoshi's Safari, Metal Combat, Tin Star
Potentially third party, rights issues, not re-released on VC either:
Illusion of Gaia
Looking at the first list, you can probably guess at why some stuff might be disqualified (the sports games are not great, Vegas Stakes has gambling, Super Mario All-Stars might be Mario overload and also they did the Wii retail release and it might be about protecting the game's value in some perverse way, Kirby Avalanche was probably deemed Kirby overload along with KDL3, DKC2 and DKC3 were probably excluded because the first game was more well known, Stunt Race FX is garbage.
But two conspicuous absences to me are Uniracers and Pilotwings, both of which are great games, technically supported, owned by Nintendo. Uniracers is 2P, which is an angle they're pushing with this. They're both well known. I'm really surprised!
