The Needle Drop pioneered music reviews. His other channel was for the alt-rights

I raised my eyebrows when the blog post he wrote in response to GamerGate was brought to my attention, but associating yourself with other alt-righters says it all for me. At that point you don't even have to argue about the merits of satire and parody.

I'm super confused

I always had him down as super liberal. I've seen him be critical of paul joseph watson and he has always just come across as left leaning in all the videos i've seen of him. Someone has already mentioned the video "why i'd never use the n word"

I've not read the article yet so i'm yet to have made my mind up for myself.

To clarify, it's not so much about his actual beliefs or intentions but the things he's done.

I love to see a hit piece finally drop on this dope. He made a video about how he doesn't say the nword on his serious account after the pewdiepie shit but if you watch an old video of his he drops "niggerfaggot" as a joke on his alt right account like it's nothing.

Anthony Fantano is in three points of the video about white men asking questions in this anti-"SJW" tirade.

There's this too:

Not sure why anyone in here is still defending this guy. I don't care what it is, money grab, satire or actual support for the alt-right, any sane person should know better than to associate with these types. It's disgusting.

Also, holy shit that video is awful.

I'm going to have to strongly think about this. The dude has put out vids that talk about the importance of listening to minority voices and fighting injustices. Idk what two-face game he's trying to play but it's confusing the fuck out of me.

I was confused at first too. Thinking that maybe it was one-off video that got taken out of context...but nooooope!! The fader article goes into explicit thorough detail highlighting all the fucked up racist shit he's been posting and being involved in. Dude is clearly playing the two-face game to cater to a wider demographic for the $$$$. Fuck this racist POS.

BTW, he's in the process of creating a response video: https://twitter.com/theneedledrop/status/915402398679621632

Just because he supported Bernie Sanders, criticised Trump on twitter, wants universal healthcare, has made videos about racism (although a bit too nuanced) and is liberal in general doesn't mean he isn't alt-right

I don't understand this. How can you stand for everything that is against the 'alt-right' and yet still be 'alt-right'?

As for Fantano, I always saw thatistheplan as a satire of the 4chan culture he was a part of and still has some connection to these days.

Getting hung up on whether he himself is alt-right is kind of missing the point, because factually he was creating videos which were basically indistinguishable from those created by alt-right people. Whether they were meant to be satirical, genuine or a cash grab doesn’t really matter - he made the videos and they propagated alt-right talking points.

TBH i don't really care whether or not Fantano is or is not actually racist, is or is not actually a part of the alt-right, whether his TITP stuff was 'satire' (if this is what people are passing off as satire now oh god kill me), he absolutely courts all that for his own monetary gain and he just generally fucking sucks. It's all two-faced bullshit so he can appear nice and friendly and progressive to all the artists he covers and the contemporaries in his industry while also getting that sweet Youtube racist teen dollar.

I used to really be a fan of his, since he started all this its always made me fucking angry and sad. I just don't have time for people putting on a minstrel show and turning around at the end and saying 'get it! it was all just a joke!'

You know the irony here, that you took that post a face value when it's satirical while stating how clear it is that Fantano is simply satire, is amusing

This is my take. It's fucking irresponsible, especially in today's political climate.

Sounds to me like he's obfuscating ultra-cynical monetary exploitation of right-wing clickbait garbage behind the veneer of "satire". Not much difference from the people you see spreading fake news through Facebook, and when queried about their activities they just go "bububu we're like The Onion!" with absolutely zero regard for the kind of attitudes they're grooming.

Almost every single word here could have also been said of the person on the left. Is she alt-right?

However, and I can't believe I have to say this, it is easier to understand tone in video format than in text.

He could've been completely serious. I didn't know. Unlike thatistheplan which is so ridiculous and OTT that it is clearly satire. I personally didn't find the channel funny, but I didn't see it as offensive.

Try to excuse it all you want. You still tried to defend satirical bigotry as being ok while in the same post taking blatant (and far less dangerous) satire at face value... I'm well within my rights to find that incredibly amusing.

It's pretty obvious that the people he is supposedly satirizing (if we go with it's satire) feel entertained and empowered by what he says. Satirical bigotry that is indistinguishable from real bigotry, satirical bigotry that attracts the exact same following as real bigotry... is in the end real bigotry.

You're seriously saying gaf isnt? Look man im super left leaning and very liberal, and even I can see it lol. It's not super bad but there is VERY rarely any sort of ultra right wing stuff on here from what I see. Every single thread like this is always left sided. From that perspective, gaf is an echo chamber.
There are plenty of political threads that bring out the ultra right wing people who often use alts so they can say their despicable shit and they get banned right quick. Islam, immigration, nazis, free speech, blackface, racism, body image, rape, and other discussions do not stay "super left" here. Every single page will have someone unique spouting a ridiculous position that will then become about them. It's only an "echo chamber" because those kinds of people don't stay long here since there's great moderation.

Repeating alt-right arguments verbatim with silly voices or whatever doesn't make something satire.

When someone you know asks you to prove Sargon is an alt-righter, that is when the conversation stops for me LOL. What on earth...

I never liked this bozo anyway, his hip hop reviews showed his underlying contempt for the culture. I'm glad he's proved my suspicions about him were right.

If Fantano's reviews were written and on the side he was writing weird alt-right meme satire then I could understand people taking it the wrong way and by extension your amusement at my miss-interpretation of the user's post.

I didn't realise satirists have to go to you to define whether or not what they are doing is satire or not.

I don't see the problem with here being predominantly left wing, you going to go to the Donald or free Republic or which ever gaming forum is the equivalent of here and chastise them for being too on the right? But yeah, it does suck when one narrative becomes the prevailing one and anything else that deviates from that is shouted down for sure.

Some of the greatest and most blatant satire was written.

This dude literally has an audience of 4channers...

You are, of course, correct. Hell I have studied satirical writing. That doesn't mean that it can't be misunderstood by people who think they are being sincere.

I enjoy his reviews and have followed him when he had like a 5% of the subscribers. And I have never been on 4chan. That probably explains why, outside of the early 'meme' reviews I didn't find that channel funny.

Only started occasionally watching this guy recently, but stopped. I kept getting put off but his whole "Rock is dead" rhetoric he'd pull whenever he shitcanned a decent rock album.

The fact that this year has seen releases from the likes of Foo Fighters, U2, The Killers, 30 seconds to Mars, Nickelback (yes, Nickelback,) and more makes me feel hopeful about the future of Rock, contrary to the naysayers.

(Sorry, I know that's a little off topic, just been wanting to get that off my chest about him)

But my point is he has an audience who doesn't treat what he says as satire (and he does nothing to dissuade them). Which is exactly the same way you treated that post, only in their case it's much more dangerous.

That's why I was amused.

Like you literally took satire at face value while mocking the idea that anyone could take that satire at face value.

It's satire, he isn't alt right, he isn't racist, but his satirical channel is poorly executed and does more harm than good.

I thought people knew this? The dude was in chats and livestreams with Sargon back in 2014.

Ha that long ago? I didn't even know Sargon dates that far back. I noticed Anthony in one of the live chats right around the time JonTron joined up with Sargon at some point.

I've always seen his secondary channel as satire. I follow him on Twitter as TND and he's very outspoken about Trump / the alt-right.

Isn't Sargon from the more united times of new atheism? That shit was like back in 08.

He seemed like a fairly liberal guy based on some of his criticisms on how women are treated in music among other things. I think his opinions have shifted over the past few years at least a little bit. What matters more to me is if he still holds these views and supports them. Him deleting that channel without a second thought seems promising to me.

It being "just" satire doesn't make it ok.

Correct. That's not the point though. He is indeed doing more harm than good and should be held responsible for his shit decisions that no doubt encouraged the alt right despite it clearly being meant to mock them.
But as a person he isn't a racist.
