Fun fact: my first username on GAF (18 years ago) was Gaymer. I remember being asked in a thread why would I choose such a name, and when I replied that I was gay some folk were surprised/did not expect that kind of openess (I may have been the first gay GAFer to "come out") but the overwhelming sense I got was of support, and in all the years since then I never felt the slightest bit of concern about disclosing or talking about my sexuality here nor did I receive any negativity or hostility because of it.

Indeed, what I have been reading today has been terrifying. I think it's time for me to walk away for now, and maybe revisit GAF tomorrow to see if things have changed. It's just too distressing for me right now.

They've seen the kind of discourse that is happening now. They've seen the kind of douches that raided their Discord groups and spammed gore and porn everywhere, as well as doxxing attempts. They've seen what kind of members have popped up lately.

I literally joined because my go-to game forum back in the day did not allow for sexual orientation discussions, and this was because the few they allowed turned nasty, and this was a pretty decent forum with decent members. Times have greatly changed since then but even then the gaming community as a whole is terrible, GAF has always been the better one regarding LGBT gamers, even in this complicated transition that I have no idea where it will take us and with an overabundance of trolling, nasty behavior and lack of enough moderators to check everything, and it is still better than what is out there.
Because these people play games and make games too. Their representation and/or lack of representation in games and in the industry are important topics. Seems like that kind of discussion isn't what GAF is about anymore so I won't be here much longer.

I guess I'm just concerned that users like that who have already been dealt with on here are going to find their way onto the new board. I did see what he said which is why I'm concerned about the new community since it seems like a lot of the garbage on here is finding its way out the door. the guy was already banned which is a plus.
I guess it just boils down to the screening process for the new site since I'm more concerned with an individual like that moving to the new forum when he's already been dealt with.

Great! Now I know exactly how all the poor, innocent peeps that were named "Osama", or "Bin Laden" felt like, shortly after the events of 9/11.
Any idea where they went? I liked gaf because of all the different backgrounds its users came from. If it ends up being a bunch of 20something white guys it's not gonna be much different than any other gaming forum.

NeoGAF should be a place for any type of person to discuss video games. Other topics can go on other forums.
The best part about forums is that you don't have to read or post in every thread, and one thing I liked about GAF is that there were threads that supported all sorts of groups that let people have their own spaces away from people who would rather talk shit.
Whether or not GAF was more respectful or more restrictive, etc... that is your own perception and is subjective. A forum is nothing without its posters and the kind of attitudes that are tolerated here is dependent on the userbase.
The sad irony of this thread turning into another argument is saddening and hopefully is just a bunch of emotions that will die down as people choose what corners of the internet they would prefer to spend their time with.

People don't stop being people because of video games and if you think video games are devoid of social commentary, or even politics, you don't pay attention to the games you play.
They went to their respective discords and are waiting for Resetera to open. Hell, most communities in general are doing that. Even SportsGAF, in general, MoviesGAF,DCGAF, etc etc. The gaming communities are also doing the same. DestinyGAF,SteamGAF,BestFriendsPlayGAF,GiantBombGAF. Almost every long standing community has mostly noped out of here.
The dumb "hurr durr this forum should be for gaming only" really don't realize how much of GamingGAF isn't willing to stand the current shitshow.
I know it's very hard for you to imagine, but women/racial minorities/lgbt play videogames too, it isn't exclusive to you. It honestly shows how completely and utterly ignorant you are, considering there are plenty of games that have those exact subjects, not to mention actual game developers consider such talks to be pretty important, which is there is actual industry talk about it.

it's funny because the majority of the games I spend my time with don't appear to have any of that. Of those my favorite is progear. there really isn't any story or meaningful dialogue displayed while you're playing afaik.
Now I said don't appear, but if you really dig deep, the plot which is possibly included in some rare promotional material is:

You don't always have to audio or written commentary about either subjects.
They're called video games for a reason. Its is a visual medium, and people will always relate to the characters they see on screen. Player characters, NPCs, etc.
Which is why you can't separate the two of them.
