I originally thought that gaming-on-the-go was a gimmick, but you just can't beat playing for a bit in the living room, taking it with you somewhere else and continuing precisely where you left off, and the icing on the cake is that you can still play the damn thing any way you want, detach the controllers, take the pro controller with you, whatever, apart from the smaller screen and battery there is absolutely zero constraints when taking it on the go.
They knocked it out of the park because, whilst initially looking gimmicky, it is so far from that it's unbelievable.
GAF trashed the Wii launch and Wii reveal. Went nuts for WiiU.
Going by GAF it should be massive.
Many of these early replies shows that as a whole, people that tend to be more "hardcore" really can't judge the gaming industry trends well. The average gamer could care less about 4k, HDR, etc. Give them a compelling piece of hardware with good software and specs nor price mean much. I remember a similar thing happening with PS3 when it was first announced. People balked at the price but it sold and sold well, even outpacing the Xbox 360 which had a full years head start. Then of course Wii came and flipped all that upside down again, overtaking both consoles by a significant size in an even shorter span of time.
Rule of thumb, don't trust Gaf.
Revisionist history from him or you? I guess it depends on what your definition of "sell well" and "more popular" is? In reality the PS3 sold 5.56 million in it's first year and the Xbox 360 sold 5.65 million in it's first year and after that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales every year until 2012 which meant it caught up to the Xbox 360 in total sales and even overtook it in 2013 despite the Xbox being on the market a year longer. So if you believe what you wrote about the PS3's sales it would mean the 360 didn't sell well either and seeing as the 360 was outsold every year they were on the market together except for 2007 and 2012 i would say the PS3 was the more popular console for the longest time. But it all comes down to perception i guess. There's a little revisionist history in here. When the PS3 was $700, it did not sell well outside of the "first wave" with scalping and such. The combination of a $300 price point in addition to software besides Killzone and Haze eventually resulted in the present success of the PS3. In actuality, the Xbox 360 was more popular for the longest time. Unlike Sony, they failed to carry that momentum into the next gen.
I believe that Microsoft fucked up at the end, Sony kept releasing steady games on the ps3 even at the end of life, but the xbox started lacking a lot of content in the end, Microsoft let the console die and focused on the new xbox 1.Revisionist history from him or you? Not to mention the PS3 was never $700USD, it was actually $499 or $599.

Yeah, you are right in this case i was talking about Europe and japan, i don't have any experience with US, but i do believe the US players should have abandoned MS, they really insulted the fans in my opinion, and i believe they still are with the way they are handling the xbox brandIt was European and Japanese sales combined that pushed the PS3 ahead worldwide at the end. Looking at individual countries, the PS3 never beat the 360 in the US. So your experience last gen was different depending on what country you lived in.

it was huge yes, Like in europe it is opposite of US. Sony has almost all market, what surprises me is that MS really neglected the fans both with games and business model this gen and people still stick with it in the US i meanYeah, here in the USA last gen the default system was the 360. If you wanted to play with local people you met, borrow games, or have the best selection of rental games it was the 360. Some markets like different systems for different reasons, after all... wasn't the Sega Master System huge in Europe? I wish I could predict or understand why.

Xenoblade and Odyssey, Zelda and Mario Kart if you didn't already play them or if you liked them on Wii U. If you're in to Musou, I hear Fire Emblem Warriors is fun, though I haven't played it yet.I might be buying one today with a work bonus I just got. Pays for the console, so I just need to know what games are worth paying full price for at this moment.
I wish that the PSPgo wasn't so far ahead of its time... that people appreciated this feature when it existed that long ago... that Sony would have felt it a necessary feature for the Vita... and the Vita would have been the first proper hybrid. At least they tried the PSTV thing, but imagine if the Vita simply had an HDMI port out of the box...

vita died b/c of the proprietary memory cards. if the vita, or vita2, or the potentially newer hybrid system to come out for ps5 to compete with switch will have standard memory cards, hdmi, etc. then it's a sure-fire winner in my books. i have my vita but never turn it on anymore b/c i just remote play from my pc.I might be buying one today with a work bonus I just got. ...that would have been ahead of its time too, and nobody would have cared.
This thread is an embarrassing reminder that GAF is almost never right on this kind of thing,
Well If you like me who plays long JRPGs its blessing. One of my biggest reason I was addicted to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 more than I was with Persona 5.It will probably flop, no one wants a hybrid portable console
I like every time this thread gets bumped. No worries! It's funny to read all the comments. I was one of the non believers, I got a switch in june last year, after the success of zelda, splatoon and seeing that Mario was looking really good. It a testament that software really makes the console.ah my phone lagged while I was scrolling and i accidentally hit the post button. pls disregard
The switch being a hybrid handheld/home console is amazing. One thing I don't get about the design though. Why didn't they make the dock in a way so that you can play with all the bells and whistles at home on the handheld scree n docked? Kind of just make it a chunkier handheld at home.
I always thought it would do well, but not as high as some of the crazy predictions of 100 million plus or whatever. Too much competition from smart devices these days. Plus PS5 and NextBox will both be on the cards in a couple of years and Nintendo will be way behind again.
So you think Nintendo won't release a hardware upgrade/revision to remain competitive or something? It's like you people don't even pay attention to what Nintendo does.

The search works pretty well now! Here's what you said:Man looking back at those first few pages is something. Wish I could find whatever I posted in here.
Given I posted on this very forum 3 years ago saying Nintendo’s only way forward for success was NX being a hybrid, I’m inclined to believe I must have predicted Switch would be successful.
No, its absolutely crow. The Switch if my math is correct has to be at a minimum of 16 million sold worldwide as of today, (someone correct me if I'm wrong)but I believe its closer to 18 or even 19million.(14.86 at the end of January)I wouldn't say eating crow just yet. If anything, Nintendo has struggled with longevity. They always had the fanbase that would gobble up the initial stock. Anyone who did say it would fail right out of the gate are crow eaters though.
The coming years will be a test for Nintendo to keep up their support for the console. It should also be said that because it's a hybrid, their massive handheld success is really contributing a lot to the launch. I'm interested to see how Nintendo handle their hand held business because it feels like they just competed with themselves.

lol I have no idea if you said anything else, that's all the search could find. You may have to start worrying about it hitting Gamecube numbers, though
