But the services are never going to be the same, because the first and 2nd party game output on each console is different, and even how much of those games' development is spent on an online component differs.I don't find it relevant weather MS was first to start charging for playing online. I mean, that was back in 2005? They were significantly ahead of sony at that time when it came to Xbox Live and it's features.
MS has a reputation for being consumer friendly now. As i've stated above, you better believe the backlash will be severe within the industry, social media, youtube etc.
As you said, you're not big on playing online to begin with, so it's not a big issue for you, where as people who play COD, GTA, RDR2,BF, GR etc, this will be a big factor for many.
Some people do not like supporting a brand if they feel like they're getting ripped off when the competition is offering the same service for free. People have been complaining about paying to play online for years.
Take Death Stranding for instance, it has an online component, and yet it isn't locked behind PS+, so a gamer getting access to that type of game on one platform with a paywall - but doesn't negatively impact the game isn't going to complain about the service offering IMO, whereas no paywall, but no games at that AAA tier experience on your console might give some gamers something to complain about the overall value proposition - looking over the fence - IMO.
