28% spiderman and meh...same as GOW...

Hi,

I'm a PlayStation guy (check my post history if you doubt).
There were several people here that repeated during several years that sony's first party output was declining due to many games looking too samey.
I dismissed most of those rants.
After all, i loved gow3, the last of us and a few others..
Now i'm playing spiderman. The game is highly polished and many good things but it's... Tedious, boring. Like the current output of pixar for movies: some kind of tasteless game.
It happened to me first with GOW 2018. High production values but so so far of the adrenalyne pumping fight against hades or poseidon in gow3. Boring in a way.
And now spiderman. I'm at 28%: it looks like a clone of a random game with a NYC skin.

I miss the sony that greenlighted motorstorm pacific rift and warhawk.

I loved the last guardian but it was a highly delayed game that i'm not sure would be greenlighted today.

I'm afraid ps5 will continue this trend...

That was my rant. Hope sony takes some gambles with future games as it's the essence of their past success.

Not played spiderman yet because it looks like a standard open world game but with a superhero twist, need to be in the mood for an open world game when I get round to buying it.

However GOW 2018 is Goat tier so not sure what that's got to do with anything. The combat in that game was sensational.

Spiderman is shit.

GOW is the best title SONY has released (1st party) in 10 years.

I don't agree because the new GOW it's my favorite of the bunch and it's the first time i would put it beside any Devil May Cry. Spiderman it's also considerably better than any Batman Arkham wathever in my books just because how better the combat is.

Maybe you just wanted something more action oriented and linear.

Nah Spiderman is excelent if you like Sunset Overdrive, it's that on steroids. It's really good, it's not Horizon: Many Yawns...

I just felt like it was another good/quite fun game with a lot of Spider-Man love.

That’s the problem with a lot of games these days. They’re getting overhyped into the stratosphere, so you walk in with these ultra-inflated expectations and perceive an enjoyable game as a letdown.

At this point, I think it’s just best to disassociate from Internet hype a bit.

I like Horizon many yawns though :(

Not a massive fan of Sunset Overdrive either BTW. Tried to get into it twice, once on Xbox One and then later again on PC but got a couple of hours in both times and dropped it. It just didn't grab me. I thought I would like it because people have drawn parallels with Ratchet and Clank, but I just don't see it.

GoW lived up to hype, so did GoT, even HZD

But thats just my opinion

I've felt the same as you with GOW. I really tried liking it since i loved the original trilogy, but its just boring. Combat is nowhere the level of the old games, and the story is tedious and unenventful, with very few actual good moments. I'm considering dropping it altogether.

Only played a bit of Spiderman, but my impression of it was basically "yeah i'll get tired of this with a single session"

Hmm I enjoyed spider man, it's that type of Open World like inFamous Second Son, Saint's Row 3 and that type of "concentrated open world" where is very little filler.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
I like the movement and the fighting of Spider man, it did over stay it’s welcome a bit with all the side shit to do. I remember almost nothing of god of war but using a boat to get around and the ending.

I'm more of an Xbox guy myself but GOW was one of my top 3 favourite games of all time and was pretty much the reason I ended up buying a PS4. I thought Spiderman was pretty meh as well. I'm not really a huge superhero genre fan though.

I'd like to see Sony go more out of their comfort zone this time around and try some new things that arent 3rd person action adventure. Killzone reboot would be awesome. A multiplayer focused game like that would give me more of a reason to spend more time on playstation.

I hear ya OP, I feel the same about Sony's output. I was expecting more from the lauded PS4 exclusives but was disappointed overall. Clearly though we're in the minority so I don't expect it to change with PS5 not that I care too much. Just means there's even less reason to think about consoles.

I agree OP. I neber finished GOW or HZD as i found them boring. Didnt even try spoderman before selling my pro.
I also miss motorstorm especially apocalypse and i too fear that sony basically now greenlight 3rd person action/adventure games. We’ll see though.

I enjoyed and finished GOW but agree on Spiderman, dropped it pretty quick, not worth my time.

Sony first party make some excellent and well polished games but they also have a problem I call the walking simulator syndrome, pretty movie like experience games that are a bit generic , slow and derivative.

I enjoyed Spider-Man. I just finished it a week ago. The story is kind of slow in the first half, but it picks up considerably in the second. It spends a lot of time laying the groundwork. I ended up feeling quite satisfied with the game. I posted impressions here:

Spider-man and God of War have very little in common.

I was very surprised with Marvel's Spider-man success because besides the traversal (which is excellent and very satisfying) it's a fairly mediocre game. I've always thought so many copies sold was a product of MCU fever.

But 2018's God of War is a goddamn masterpiece. Probably the best PS4 exclusive alongside Bloodborne.

That's the problem with all AAA games now. They don't or can't take chances. Too much money at stake. So we get more of them same. Because those games made millions then AAA publishers will continue to go to that well. I forsee a sort of videogame crash soon. Even Nintendo goes to that well every time. Zelda, Yoshii, Mario. The only new IP from them this gen was Arms? In any case. Indies will continue but new AAA IP's will slowly go away.

Spider-Man is good dumb fun. It's not the artistic achievement of a game like GoW or TLOU2, but I couldn't put it down. Had to 100% it and all the DLC, and I never do that.

Spiderman was fun to traverse, but I really don't like open world games where the map is filled to the brim with "things" to do.

GoW was great, and I'm probably due for a replay here soon since it's been a couple years.

GoW is superior to Spiderman.
My only complaint for GoW is lack of enemy variety.

The old GoW had near trash levels of combat.

2018's God of War was a HUGE gamble by Sant Monica.

To all the people saying all Sony games are the same because most of them are cinematic and action adventure this is like saying all movies are the same which is frankly reductionist.

We started God of War but I haven't picked it up after the first boss fight and the next dungeon. It's fine and I might get back to it soon but it's nowhere near the spectacle intro to GoWIIII. That was one of the PS3 games like Killzone 2 that has over a 90 on Metacritic but journalists absolutely trashed it, which led to the PS4 era where Sony makes the same critical darling formula game over and over again.

Meanwhile, Evolution and Zipper are gone and Killzone is never coming back.

I feel the same as you do OP, the production value is high for sure.
But the games feel so boring to me, they just have that MCU vibe to me like they were made by people in suits in a boardroom based on trends.
They feel so blatantly '' mainstream '' in a way I dunno how else to explain it, they're just so bland and safe.
And the hype behind them much like with the MCU seems so artifical to me especially with the marketing.

Sony basically makes two styles of games now, and while they’re excellent, if they aren’t your style you will be a bit bummed by their output.

GOW threw out the entire formula they had built on for over a decade. What is safe about that?

The generic open world missions aren't great, but the story is cool, and the movement in the game is the best I've experienced all generation. Just feels amazing to play.

the issue is that Sony games tend to get MASSIVELY overrated by not only reviewers but also the community, both GoW4 and Spider-Man are absolutely meh games... I happend to love Spider-Man (I got the Platinum after all) but objectively speaking, it is only better compared to say, Amazing Spider-Man 2 in detail and not by much. yet it is held in WAAAY higher regards... and IMO it was worse than Insomniac's first open world game, Sunset Overdrive. it is also way more generic as it simply follows the very same Formular as basically every open world Spider-Man game.

God of War 4 was also meh, I liked it (especially the side quest stuff as it had way less AAA nonsense in these sections) and it's far from a bad game or anything, but the fighting system is very mediocre all things considered (not that GoW was ever really good in this department, but the spectacle of the older games is missing now as well) and the boss fights were atrocious... I for example couldn't believe that I already fought the final boss when the game ended since he was so fucking boring and unimaginative... I thought there's gonna be another boss but NOPE.

both of these games are highly polished but in terms of gamedesign and gameplay they are absolutely nothing special nor especially good.

subjectively I loved them, but if I look at them a bit more objectively they're nothing special in any way and have many flaws.
