I agree completely.

Every time the Xbox UI changed after the blades on the X360 it seemed to run slower and get more complicated. More buttons presses to do the same actiions. The new one is simple and snappy (though still not as user-friendly as the blades were). Unless a change will make the UI faster or require less presses to navigate, leave it alone.

I set up my PC in back in 2016 so that any game is either one or two clicks away and I haven't changed the setup since because it's a UI and it already does exactly what I want. Well designed UIs are supposed to make getting to the shit you want happen faster, not look flashy or be loaded with bloat. Imagine if TV or receiver settings menus were changed all the time, every single dad or grandpa on Earth would lose years off their lives trying to figure them out again.

/rant.

I love the look of the X1X/Series X UI, it feels far more exciting than the 360 dash but functionally blades was the greatest UI of all time. I love how fast the UI is on the Series X, that it has all the necessary functions without a bunch of gimmicks. I've set my power options to energy saver, because it boots up faster now than rest mode did on the 1X.

I originally thought QR was a gimmick but I've since decided that in reality it's one of the greatest functions ever in the UI. Completely turning off the Series X and being able to get back into my game to the exact spot I left off instantaneously is truly a game changer.

Don't all of the multiplats look and run in nearly identical fashion on both systems? What is the narrative you speak of, Sony's first party?

Mostly, yes. While multiplats run nearly identical on each, there are some cases of PS5 running better, beyond what would've been assumed. There's not to much reason why Series X should be hitting framerates 4-8 frames less on average in Cold War during cutscenes, for example.

One idea I've seen pop up that I didn't consider before is that games like Cold War on Series X could be running in SMT Off mode; that would disable half the threads though clock the CPU up a bit higher. However, that would assume the Series X version of Cold War is the current-gen version optimized with some graphical and framerate mode enhancements, and Activision would've for (whatever reason) wanted higher CPU clocks on the Series X version (possibly to hit higher framerates). This'd be a case of taking a cheaper route of getting some of the benefits of Series X on such a port.

However, PS5 has no SMT Off mode. It's somewhat possible that for PS5 version, Activision could've optimized more for 16 threads, and if the game has marketing rights with Sony that should suggest it was the lead platform out of it and Series X for the ports, meaning more time and resources for optimization meaning possibly utilizing fuller 16 threads, while just choosing to stick with an 8C/8T setup on Series X but leveragig the higher clocks in that mode as a result.

This is just a theory, but I saw it in a couple of these video comparisons and I think it's at least somewhat worth considering as being a factor here, in addition to the Gamecore stuff, for why we could be seeing some of the differences in performance we're seeing. However, in terms of how this plays into a wider narrative, oddities like the differences in some performance metrics on games like Cold War and others, in addition to the visual prowess Sony's 1P games (at least some of them) are already doing for making PS5 look very favorable in terms of graphics, that does start to work against MS if some games of that type of level don't show up soon, or aren't shown off soon (running on the system).

I don't know if it's best idea to rely on 3P devs for that, unless you're talking about timed exclusives or platform/ecosystem exclusives (as in that case, MS could be working with those devs). That's why I mentioned Bright Memory Infinite, Scorn, Exo-Mecha etc. Besides 1P games will generally be the better visual/power showcases anyway; Sony's own on PS5 like Demon's Souls and Miles Morales are proof of that (not to downplay the 3P games though; most of them look very good including WD Legion, NBA 2K1, DiRT 5 and Valhalla).

lol the gaming media won't stop asking questions that the MS can't legally answer even if told that they can't legally speak on it. zenixmax games will only be on pc, xbox, and xcloud like the rest of xbox games.

They're desperate for clicks and IGN are the most desperate of them all. Constantly taking quotes out of context to try suggesting those games will be multiplat on PS5.

I know they don't give numbers but everything seems to point at 1.2 million - 1.4 million. Not bad at all; just a few generations past a console was lucky to hit 1 million in three months after launch.

Go Go Neo Rangers!

I really dont expect them to show this again in any fashion other than on their own official channels. The game was supposed to be out so I don't see Microsoft trying to re-reveal it or anything. I think they will use it as a second push after the launch period.

That being said, Microsoft will be at the VGA's. Book it.

I am kinda frustrated that I can’t change resolution and frame rate from within the game. I know I know, get a PC. It’s just overall not my thing.

For example. I can check allow 4k in my system settings, but set my resolution and refresh rate to 120hz on my tv. In Gears 5 it gives me the option at what FPS to run it at and controls the input directly from there.

Modern Warfare, Blops, and dirt 5 don’t allow me to do that. I have to uncheck the allow 4k mode in order to force the games into 120fps mode. Samsung Q70R btw. Which also won’t allow me to run freesync basic. Kinda odd as it will become washed out within a few minutes of use. Ultimate works mostly fine, but has some slight motion blur.

There‘s a glitch for XB1 owners of CoD where they can gift 2 of their friends the Series X upgrade for 9.99 each.

Seems like a way better perk than some bonus XP And 2 loadouts. 😅
Anyone taking advantage of this? I can send the money for the upgrade via PayPal

Ooops I see it now, I think I need to learn to read.

Thanks, that's great news because this game looks really interesting to me. I love the art and the setting, I just hope it's good.

Unfortunately it looks taller than one S/X while it's exactly the same height, the proportion are a bit off due to that simple, monolithic design. Not to mention that awful black "speaker" that kills the entire impression. IMO they should've just cut the One S in half and call it a day.

I want to find a way to show the series s because its such a nice looking piece of hardware. Definitely doing it's job for me at the moment and It's half the size of my node 202.

Damn finally someone said it, who is not me. Yeah dimensions are off and due to that I don't find the console appealing, it's like 5cm too tall from the front view and it's bothering me. Not much as PS5 flaps, but yeah it does bother me...

I had no idea the Halo next gen update wasnt even out. I've been playing Reach and didnt even realise. 🤯

Is there any way to see the patch notes on games? I miss that feature from the PS4.

Wow, shortages until April. Fuck me. I remember the One releasing in a few countries and having to wait a long time to buy one here. While officially released here, this means the same shit with the Series X.
Goddamnit, this is some serious bs! I've been looking everywhere, I've been driving by my local Walmart, Target and Gamestop and there's no consoles anywhere. How could MS fuck the launch so bad. I completely jumped the shark buying my OLED early thinking MS actually wanted people's money and they were going to meet demand. Fuck you Phil!!!

Hello friends, with the news of shortages until April i am wondering if the Series S is a good stopgap console until i can get my hands on the x?

I already have a one x, but i would like a feel of next gen, quick resume, ssd loads etc. I am not going to stick with a series s permanently since i have most games outside of gamepass on disc.

thoughts?

This dev makes an interesting point regarding the early performance comparisons. I think we'll know more in about a year. But the fact that XSX easily hits 4k120 in so many games and even occasionally 6k60 indicates to me that the tooling/XDK just needs to mature:

What's the screen that you are likely to play it on? It depends on that and how far you typically sit away from it.

If you have the ability to get good resell value or to use it on a 1080p monitor later, I think it's worth it.

Depends on how much the cost means to you, I suppose, it'll be next gen-proof at least so if you do get a Series X it can work well in a second room or kids room etc.

If you really want to play with SSD load speeds and quick resume, and honestly I wouldn't be able to go back, I'd say go for it.

Got a 65 LG C9 4K OLED, so i am getting the series x when its available, but with shortages im considering the S until then. I am going to sell the s when i get an x, i can probably sell it for 80$ less then what i buy it for when the time comes. i sitt about 1.5-2 meter away from my tv.

The cost is fine, i will sell it once i can get my hands on the series x, thanks for the feedback both of you! currently playing yakuza like a dragon on my one x, and want better loadtimes. (Its actually really good, and i shat on the game for months before because of the combat change lmao, just wish it was a spinoff)

Took a while to get my preordered XsX from Walmart Canada here on the west coast, but finally was able to pick it up last night after work. I was the only there picking up an XsX with a cluster of almost 10 people waiting for their PS5s.

Setting up was a breeze with the Xbox phone app, and played some Forza Horizon 4 and set up my overnight download queues before bedtime. Game pass is a crazy good deal. Can’t believe how small and quiet this console is, wow. Also really appreciate how stealthy it looks in my room. Loving this thing already!
