Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

Decided to go the PS5 repair centre route after Amazon UK couldnt/wouldn't replace it as they have no system to prioritise purchasers with faulty units... So contacted Sony support not one apology ever, waited 16 days without a PS5. "Replacement" came today, the second I start a game its noisy as fuck, OS silent. Can't of been tested or someone elses return.

Honestly at this point I'm close to packing it in. This is the worst console launch I've ever experienced (in terms of hardware issues). Spent hundreds with Sony (have over 400 digital games) but this is an absolute shit show. At this rate I'll be playing a polished version of Cyberpunk... 😡

I'll update when I've phoned the support line AGAIN.

Update 2: 30/12/2020
Second replacement (third console) is the best yet but coil whine really kicks off on 60fps modes in Spiderman: MM and Valhalla.

Update 3: 7/01/2021
Third replacement (4th console) authorized. Sony CS is aware of the problems, they have been briefed/shown it and agree its "definitely something you wouldn't want when playing on your console". If the 4th turns out faulty they will swap it again until a satisfactory unit is sent
.

Update 4 24/01/2021
Fourth PS5 (3rd replacement) is the charm. A silent PS5 at last! ❤

Update 5 26/01/2021
Developed an annoying fan noise (it's a type B) given up for now. Sold and will jump back in when manufacturing process matures.

Update 6 04/02/2012
I lied 😂 Bought a new one all digitial PS5 with no issues, runs very close to silent with everything that's thrown at it. Finally happy!

Bro it's coil whine, hardly a defective product. Slap some headphones on and deal with it.

Think mine gets it now and then depending what I'm doing on the console but it's not game breaking and can barely hear it.

Stick with it for a bit until there's a model revision, sell this one and get that one.

I've got a really good sound system, and don't play with headphones ever. It's just not acceptable to me. Plus I use it for media streaming as well. Rather not have one than have to put up with that tbh. 😱

Your best course would be to wait a little longer to go for a fix/replacement - it's not like Sony had any chance to fix that problem (if they're even going to do that).
If Sony even acknowledges the coil whine to be a problem, we'll maybe see a PS5 revision with better PSU/no coil whine mid 2021.
I'd wait for that and check message on gaming forums to see if people report of any fixes.

Good that you can't hear yours or are barely able to.
Mine was really loud and I only play with headphones. It really was annoying. So that sentence doesn't make sense. Just deal with it... No.

Sorry OP, I know you had the same problem as I did and now this, it sucks. I sent mine back, waiting for a new revision. :'(

Its game specific. OS and PS4 games are silent, DMCV Special is relatively silent and I can hear it in DeS when my volume is lower. I mostly play with headset so w/e but its there. Its not nearly as bad as the Pro was, but its a lower tone.

I think Sony should apply paste to the PSU?

Do you really need your own thread for that? You are already disussing it on the PS5 coil whine thread.

it is annoying, i give you that and you should try to replace it if it bothers you, but it is by no means a hardware defect. It is the compromise between affordable tech and high-end devices.

Rather see this than another goddamn Cyberpunk Thread lol. Why are there so many?!

I'm surprised you actually expected this to get fixed. It's not faulty hardware and unless Sony acknowledges this publicly, I wouldn't expect this to go away with upcoming revisions either.

Heck, this has been a problem since the PS4 Pro rev 71XXb. We've had one Pro revision (72XXb) and a completely new console since then and we still get coil whiney consoles. It's time to accept this as the standard for Playstation.

My PS5 was louder than I expected, but doing this help me a lot:

It's easier than it seems, and also, you don't need to remove any sticker or something that breaks warranty.
I know that it's not exactly the coil whine sound, but it really makes the console more silent. Maybe it worth a try for some of you experiencing loud system.

Hostile_18 Hostile_18 send it back again if you're not satisfied with it.

Are you sure they didn't just send you your old unit back? Have you checked the serial numbers?

😄 all these Sony shills.

Some of you really need to look in the mirror, really embarrassing.

Sorry about your issue Hostile_18 Hostile_18 , I could see looking forward to getting your replacement, very unfortunate it has come back in a similar state.

You say that and then quote Tom Warren?

Fight fire with fire I guess.

I'll download more games but Astros Play room had it right off the bat.

They offered to replace it and did say sorry this time. Said it would be another 16 days I've said a month of waiting wasn't acceptable and have a supervisor phoning me back "within 48 hours".

Yeah different serial number. This one is worse than my last one tbh. They did confirm every PS5 they are replacing is actually with a new unit (UK).

Its an issue that needs to be sorted, and since you Sony shills are putting up with it someone needs to make it an issue. No way I will be putting up with coil whine when I purchase my PS5.

Coil whine isn't a hardware defect though, so calling it a "failure" or "dropping the ball" is just wrong.
If your PS5 is louder than your PS4/PS4 Pro or has severe crashes, that's a failure.
Coil whine could very well be a defect if not all consoles have it. It's at the very least due to poor design. The "just deal with it" mentality is nonsense.

How loud is it? Can you hear it all the time? If I mute mine and listen, I can hear mine from about four feet away, but it’s not loud, and certainly not noticeable when playing.

Less with the poor drama.

Do you understand statistics, do you understand that if 5 people come on a discussion forum and moan out of 10 million, its not really an issue is it.

I can anecdotally post that my 2 ps5 are dead silent, but statisticaly its meaningless in 10 million.

Most of the posts like yours show no understanding or thought, just clickbait drama based on no information at all and typical of poor tabliod journalism.

If you have any bright moments, tell us how many Ps5 need to have an issue to be significant out of 10 million.

Have you seen the PS5 hardware thread? 15% of Neogaf users have hardware issues. Or are you going to brush that off as well?

So everyone that has a PS5 has coil whine or issues with their units? I'm not putting up with anything and never have if I buy new hardware and it doesn't meet my expectations. I returned my first ps4 Pro unit when I wasn't satisfied with the noise output and I'd do it again for any hardware that I wasn't happy with.

Go cry somewhere else.

That's pretty shit then. Roll the dice again or return it entirely if you can't be bothered.

Please show me where I wrote anything like "deal with it"?
I even told Hostile_18 to maybe wait a bit longer with a replacement request, because the chance to get another unit with the same problem is just incredibly high atm.

The first 5 seconds of Cyberpunk were buzzing free 😭.

My video camera isnt picking up the buzzing sound for some reason but it's clear day in real life. Had another person come listen and it's not just me 😂.

It's not that easy to catch that sound on camera.
It's also very hard to really say if it's a bad noise or not - I also had a bad buzzing sound and wanted to replace, until friends and family really wondered what sound I was talking about because they couldn't hear a thing. So I guess I have to blame that one to my pretty sensitive hearing (at least when it comes to those electrical sounds) and now I turn the volume up or use headphones.

Hope Sony will somehow be able or willing to help again.

Mine has it but I play with headphones so it's not bothering me enough to go for a replacement so soon. I have until the beginning of March to return it so I'm just going to keep enjoying and then, if stock is more readily available, I may roll the dice on a replacement. Whether it's on all consoles to a certain degree or just on a few, I'd never go for a replacement so soon as there's a pretty high chance you'll get the same issue. I've seen this with phones, graphics cards, TVs, etc. If there is a widespread issue, it takes some time for processes to be changed and the fixed or improved products to start hitting shelves. That is, if there's even a real problem at all.

Fan noise I dont mind, the PS5 disc spinning is no issue. But buzzing is a completley different noise that drives me crazy. I can hear it anywhere in the room.

Never had an issue with any other console ever, well apart from the 360 red ring. Certainly not two in a row.

Yeah, I get that. If you haven't heard that kind of thing before it's pretty hard to just try to ignore it. I remember going through a bunch of 980 Ti graphics cards a few years ago as they were notorious for coil whine and, as you sit right next to a PC, it was really loud.

How long do you have to return it to Amazon? You'll have the extended Christmas window, right? If so, maybe just play and enjoy it until last minute and then return it, crossing your fingers you can find another fairly soon. It sucks after waiting so long, though.

Yeah it's the end of January. At least I'm getting today to try Cyberpunk 😭.

Amazon uk is the end of Jan. I'm presuming it wont be an issue that its technically a different serial number now? I suppose Sony will have made a note of it.

This would bug me too. My ps3 fat sounds like a dust buster. I didnt get a ps4, but my original xbone had a whine sound come from the fan in the power supply after a few years and it drove me nuts. Since that point i havent had any noise from my xbox systems.

In this day and age there is no excuses for noisy hardware. They charge top dollar and should use high quality parts.
