Sony set to buy Square Enix

That would take care of the issue where ppl keep saying Sony needs to make a JRPG.

I doubt it gonna happen. Its not the type of aquisition Sony makes. But Bethesda happened, so nothing would surprise me anymore.
I think Sony just have a close and good relationship with Square and will keep making console exclusive/ temporary deal with them.

The sources behind this rumor are as weak as they can get, but apart from that I simply don't think it would be good for Sony to acquire Square Enix.

Both Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics are a mess, while in Japan they have a ton of teams making shitty mobile games, Switch games that wouldn't do well on a home console (the Bravely series, the Secret of Mana remakes, Octopath Traveller, everything made by Tokyo RPG Factory, etc) and pure trash like Left Alive.

And I don't think that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, any new mainline Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy XIV Online, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest or NieR games would compensate the headache that managing the rest of the company would bring to any new owner.

Just use common sense. How would a random nobody on Twitter know about a multi-billion dollar acquisition before anyone else? Both Sony and S-E are publicly traded companies. If there's even a hint that this is happening, financial news outlets would be all over it.

While I don’t believe the rumor is true, SE will be a good remedy to Sony’s increasingly lowering Japanese market share that is dominated by Nintendo.

Sony basically has no 1st party Japanese studio with AAA capacity which is a damn shame for Japanese company.

I would be okay with it except for the nagging worry that they would forget the PC market completely if SONY bought them....

Even though I feel like its bullshit and almost not possible, is still plausible to believe a japanese company buys another japanese one.

Yeah that shit ain't happening. Square is making butt tonnes of money off the switch releases and pc.

Only real things I can see happening is exclusives and timed exclusives for PS. It already began with ff7 and FF16. You've then got athia, I think Xbox will be left to the wayside this gen for square while Sony pile-drives money into deals.

Isn't their most profitable game an MMO? So not sure how useful they would be as a weapon in the console war, It's not like they can make it a console exclusive.

When he's got people "in the know" backing him up.

Perhaps you've heard of Crapgamer.
Did crap gamer back this rumor up? I don’t doubt crap has a few psuedo insider friends but a literal who’s Twitter account and crap gamer aren’t exactly eurogamer or kotaku. As much as I want this to be true.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
It’s not really Sony’s way to acquire a company as an outright purchase, they seem to work with studios for a while and establish a close relationship first.
Well, at least they got that part out the way in the last 23 years 🤔

this seems unlikely but I guess we'll see if Square-Enix only announce FFVII Remake Part 1 for PS5 & PC

if they do announced it for Xbox as well then this is obviously bunk

Nowadays it would be a waste of money. To me it looks like Square just live by the name of it's IPs and a lot of hype, nothing more than that. Before try to buy SE, they should try for Capcom instead, or Namco.

Yet, I really don't want Sony owning any of those, nor MS.

Learn to read instead of making a snarky reply.

What I'm getting at is that their market value is very close to their purchase value for Sony. It has nothing to do with Square accepting a shitty deal, and everything to do with Sony not overpaying.

In comparison, Bethesda which sells a ton of games on Sony platforms - Microsoft will have to essentially OVERPAY for something that isn't as valuable to their platform since the market value is based upon sales on Sony and Nintendo consoles, and now they very likely won't sell their games on those platforms.
Yeah, perhaps my post was a bit snarky.

I understand what you are saying about their value being tied to their predicted earnings which are larger on Sonys platform. Their market cap is over 8bn, how much is their purchase value tied to their earnings from Sonys platform?

In a time when codemasters get acquired for over 1bn, is Bethesda and all those I.Ps that expensive in comparison?

Id be cool with it, though i will miss all the jrpgs that have been coming to gamepass from them. But at this point, most of their japanese output is first and foremost on playstation, or switch, and id love to see the tomb raider games thrive under sony. Wonder if series like bravely default or octopath will become ps exclusive?

Sure but you didn't challenge the poster who stated otherwise and until you do I won't
You know MS don't give the numbers so if Square doesn't you'll never know which means you pulled your numbers out thin air.
Here’s an example.

Most of SE’s games don’t even make it to Xbox because they already know just how poorly they would sell. Refer to article below for examples.

Not that I believe the rumour though.

Just wanted to see if it was financially possible, and I could be doing this completely wrong, but I'm seeing that SNE has $3.3B in cash as of March 2020. Market cap for SQNNY (Square Enix) is about $8.8B.

Can someone with better knowledge on financial statements and acquisitions square that circle for me?

I'm very doubtful of such a transaction happening but it would absolutely bolster Sony's presence in the Japanese gaming market, as far as capital share goes. They would also own Crystal Dynamics and Eidos, which would also boost their Western portfolio (and could help those teams actually learn how to manage their games). It would be smart from a business perspective, but it would make gamers pretty resentful of them joining the consolidation game.

For the love of all that is holy, let this not be true. I'd hate for these assholes to own Square Enix.

They have more than $40B in cash not $3.3B

Your numbers are way off. Sony has about 45 billion cash on hand

If this happens (which it won't if we're being honest) this would cause a shitshow with Smash. Imagine if Sony removed what would be their IP from Smash... Oh boy.
