Contrary to what people like Druckmann think games are still being made primarily to have FUN and relax while playing them. And a part of that fun goes away if the main character you'll spend 100 hours with was intentionally made uglier than the character from the first game. It's just how most people work. You'll want to spend your free time with someone attractive or simply nice to look at, not necessarily with someone who isn't.

Aloy certainly looks a bit odd.

Beauty is kinda subjective, so it's normal that some find her normal or beautiful, and others odd or ugly.

Personally I think her face/jaw have some weird structure, and I would bet that the trend of avoiding too sexy females went a bit out of hand here. Fortunately, it's nothing too horrendeous that prevents enjoying the game.

Downplaying the effect of attractive protagonists is a mistake.
You cant avoid feeling better when you are with someone attractive that with a random person. That's how biology works.
Anything else is virtue signaling.

Yes, you can make the rational decision of 'it's a videogame character and I'm here to play, not to have a wank' which is obviously legit, but an attractive protagonist will ALWAYS make you care more.
Your brain in the end dont gice a fuck about it being a videogame. It just understands that it's someone you will look at a lot and you will spend a lot of time with, os it better be with someone as beautyful as possible.

The problem with the video is that he made it to try and preach to people who are basically just having a laugh about a character's appearance in a fictional work. Aloy does look er….a little different. Most people including myself typically like playing with attractive characters in games, but I don’t mind average or even ugly as well. Games and most entertainment in general are about fun, immersion and escapism for most and they generally like to look at attractive characters.

What gets me though is the lack of consistency in entertainment. I don’t mind playing with a Selene or Aloy in Returnal and Horizon. I’m playing for the experience, escapism and fun. Characters like that are absolutely fine to me, but why do they insist in basically finding the most muscular, handsome men and supermodel, gorgeous women for TV, social media, commercials, movies, advertising, etc, but feel games should be more grounded?
