Young oracle, young architect and young Morpheus. God forbid we have some old people in this movie.
The story will most likely feature a time travel plot, to fit in all these younger characters (can't have old farts in Matrix 5 if this is a success). Which makes it even worse.

In the first Matrix movie, Morpheus told Neo that he freed other people before him.
The fight scene in the trailer is probably the result of Morpheus' first rescue where Neo tells him the prophecy of "The One" that sets him on his patch.

In essence Neo is sent back in time to create his own prophecy.
I've seen people speculate that the girl is the program Neo met at the subway station at the start of Revolutions and was with Oracle at the end.

Oh good catch! That could be possible yes. Since she was the Oracle's protégé, she could be filling her role.

There's also the architect who says "...to be going back to where it all started. Back to the Matrix". Resurrections implies that Neo and Trinity get reincarnated, but why would they remain old while the others are young? So they probably won't travel in time physically, but join a younger Matrix where many of the events in the first 3 movies haven't happened yet.

That's not what that line is referring to.

Don't click if you don't want to know.
That's the scene where the WB executive is telling Thomas Anderson they want a fourth game from him after the successful Matrix trilogy.

I remember the last time people were this hyped over a Matrix trailer.

And then I went to the theater and had one of the most disappointing experiences in my life. Not falling for it again.

How is it having a random character who comes to realize they are living in a program doing a reboot? It;s like you never watched the movie a referenced? Which was not a reboot?

If it's treading the same water, it's basically a reboot. Going about their day as normal, learn about the Matrix, see that the Matrix is real, try and stop the Matrix. It's the same thing even if it's a different character.

I genuinely don't know what to think....

It doesn't look or feel like the matrix.

Music seemed odd.
Lots and lots of colour.
Neo wearing a beanie.

Feels like they took an action movie, but then stuffed a little bit of matrix into it.

It didn't get my nostalgic. Like, wanting to watch the trilogy again. Just a trailer that exists.

Cloud Atlas is actually pretty close to the book by David Mitchell (which I love) it's just that it's a pretty hard-to-film book. It's a miracle the movie worked at all, really. I also thought the thing they did with the actors was pretty brave. Doesn't really make for a great film, but I feel I should at least mount a tepid defense :)

David Mitchell is penning Matrix 4 script according to IMDB.

Cloud Atlas was one of the movies that I almost abandoned halfway the session on the cinema. That ending was something "special" :)

To me the Wachowskis still are a one hit wonder.

Some shots look super nice (cinematography wise) and some lines are real corny and current zeitgeist drivel. I liked the trailer, not loved it and I'll keep my hype in check expecting a reloaded level of quality here. Good action but a messed up story.

I didn't know that Lawrence Fishburn isn't in the movie, but they committed the sin of casting someone who looks like a fishburne knockoff instead

Anyone know the story there?

Ok so googling reveals speculation that his character was killed in the Matrix Online game from 2005 and I guess the Wachowski's are keeping that shit as cannon??
If so, that is so fucking lame it's incredible

After Revolutions and almost 20 years, I had no expectations. This looks really fucking cool though and I'm glad, based on the rumors, they're going in a really weird direction with this.

Not really feeling it.
I am curious about the finished product.

It just looks so generic? The actors look cheap (if that makes sense)
A lot has happened in Cinema/Television since The Matrix.

Hopefully the next trailer gives off a different vibe.

This has certainly piqued my interested. I enjoy that it's not just doing the same thing and is playing with The Matrix's conventions. If you're going to revisit something 20 years later, you better have something new to contribute - and it appears there's at least some new elements in here.

And, for once in a long time, it's nice to have a trailer that leaves me curious and interested in what was shown, instead of showing me the entire movie. I'm in.

It looks ok I guess. It doesn't feel like a Matrix movie but maybe that is the point?
I'm a fan of Keanu Reeves, I love action movies. I'd watch it regardless.

Looks like a harmless nostalgia trip for people interested in retreading the same beats from the past movies. They're all much older, and it looks like the emphasis will be on story over top tier action.

Minimal to rock bottom expectations, but I'd watch it for fun.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers but I speculate that it's intentional.

I don't buy the time travel theories, but what I can surmise from the trailer and the ending of Revolutions, the Machines have replugged Neo into the Matrix--for whatever reason--and he is experiencing his first story again, albeit with the details slightly off.

Going to revisit this post after Dec 22nd to see if I was right, haha.

Yeah, it seems like they are trying to recapture the "journey of discovery" aspect from the the first movie. Which isn't a bad idea considering thats part of the reason the first movie was so much better than than the sequels.

Looks pretty solid to me. The original movie is a 10/10, so comparing this to the original is just asking for disappointment.

It sounds like this movie, even more than the others, will center around a personal story about transhumanism. I just hope it doesn't feel too preachy and on-the-nose regarding transgenderism, but rather something more nuanced, similar to the original movie but with new layers.

Maybe a weird gripe, but why are the pills in the trailer capsule pills rather than gel like in the original? Could that be on purpose? Significant to the plot? Or maybe just a careless change.

The blue pills in this one are the meds Neo has presumably been prescribed by his psychiatrist. Prescription meds won't look like the pills Morpheus offered Neo in the original.

Yeah I considered that. Could be the plot reason for it, but the promo art has both pills looking like that so it leaves room for doubt. Maybe it's just a focus on the psychiatrist thing.

What time is it?
No Laurence Fishburne? Trailer was okay and I'll watch for Keanu but the original was the only good movie (save for Neo Superman'ing out of a phonebooth before the credits) so I'm not expecting much.

Trailer was okay. Didn't sell me the idea that we need a 4th Matrix movie.

I'll still watched, but I'm not that excited for it

Very much looking forward to it. I think the teasers and trailers have been solid and I'm excited to see this.

I highly doubt there's time travel involved considering the series needs no such thing when it's a simulation and they can do whatever the fuck they want already - plus there's that shot of everyone on their cell phones so clearly this takes place in modern times.

I love the idea of exploring more about Neo questioning reality as the original movie actually didn't have much of that at all.

The trailer shows that the original trilogy is canon and a part of this movie as a shot with Neo and his eyes burned out from Revolutions is in.

Apparently this may have a lot of meta references to the movies themselves or something? Honestly sounds pretty crazy and cool to me. I want this to be a weird movie that fucks with your head/expectations.

Just noticed the shrink had blue-rimmed glasses. Played by an actor who remained in the closet for much of his life. Nice touch.

Edit: Also this may be a prequel. It could fit. Remember they said they tried various timeframes for the Matrix but settled on the late 90's. Everything we're seeing that is assumed to follow the previous films linearly could well be, but that doesn't mean everything else isn't happening in a previous cycle of the Matrix.

What does this mean?

The story according to the writers is an allusion to coming out of the closet. The pills were their allegorically visual choice: blue represents remaining untrue to oneself, red is being truthful. The meta of the scene should then make sense.

That's such bullshit. The original movie is basically a retelling of Plato's cave.
The cave representing untruth, while the outside represents the truth. Escaping the cave is strenuous, hence why people prefer to live a comfortable lie in the cave.

It's such a universal concept, that you could apply it to basically anything, living a lie or not being frank with your sexual identity could be one such example. Either the Wachowskis are retconning their movie in order to score woke points or they they didn't understand their own movie in the first place.

This is what Hollywood does nowadays, butchering the meaning of beloved cult movies in order to fit current societal trends. That is another reason why this movie is very likely going to suck.

The actual writers of the movie said this.
