I'm just gonna come clean, Xbox One had the worst first party support for any major console of all time

It’s looking better I think, but what concerns me the most is if these acquired third party offerings will be worth the long strenuous wait.
2023 isn't that far away. Some reviews from their more recent acquisitions have already been rated like Deathloop. I am not worried that Starfield or even Redfall will be bad so I think there are other things that are a bigger concern like them getting a regular cadence for releases so there aren't major droughts between games.

Compared to the original Xbox and the 360, given how good their libraries were, it was a complete disgrace of a console.

The original Xbox's list of games, plus their exclusive pc ports made that console incredible in its era.

All Xbox one had was Forza Horizon, Ori, and Gears 5 (also state of decay 2 Post patches was amazing).

Aside from the weird wording, I agree with OP here, the only interesting title they had was Ori, and it ended up coming on Switch. And speaking of Xbox Series, the same thing happened with Psychonauts 2 also releasing on PS4 (Deathloop and Ghostwire were also released on PS5, though I didn't care about those)...

It was absolute trash. I was in at launch because the 360 was amazing. Sold the thing dirt cheap and never played shit on it. I am glad they moved to PC day 1 so I am not missing anything by not paying their console tax. So far PS5 is almost as bad and the XSX is actually worse. Both should do better over the next year.

Microsoft got what they deserved with that flop of a console, all because they tried to go full 1984 and DRM. It’s the only console in a few generations I never considered buying.

Cuphead is Microsoft owned tho to a degree (they helpt financing it), same with Ori.

I think Ori even shows an Xbox Game Studios splash screen on Switch.
Cuphead is independent and self published. Ori is published and owned by MS.

yeah but Cuphead was in part financed by Microsoft, so at least that exact game is most likely dependent on microsoft's green light to be ported to anything
Studio MDHR are the only owners of Cuphead ip. MS might just had moneyhated for a temp exclusivity. Ori is the IP that MS owns.

What time is it?
I jumped on with the One X and I usually get most everything when it launches. I'll remember it mostly has a Forza Horizon/Game Pass player.

I'm not talking about the IP. this specific title, was almost entirely funded by Microsoft.
the game was originally a boss rush game with way less bosses and a super small budget. then microsoft came in, gave them a shitload of money and they expanded the game massively with jump n run levels and more bosses.

so Microsoft almost certainly partly "owns" Cuphead the game. just like Nintendo partly owns GoldenEye N64 even tho neither Microsoft, Rare or Nintendo own the 007 ip

Cuphead is not a movie IP. Just like Sony dosent own Spider-Man IP.

Sony owns Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4 and PS5. they own the code, they have 100% control over where the game can be published and ported to.
and the same is true for Microsoft and Cuphead

???I don't see how this is hard to understand???

Your wrong. Go to Cuphead website to see who owns the IP. I even quoted the trademark. On Ori website clear states the trademark belongs to Microsoft.

OP doesn't like racing games.

Sales and popularity may have not been on Xbox last gen, but I really enjoyed the Xbox experience from the start to end. Gaming wise, the One really came into its stride with the introduction Play Anywhere and the launch of Game Pass. Horizon 4, Sea of Thieves, and Gears 5 really helped me get back into Xbox ecosystem and also jump into PC gaming.

I am one of those weirdos that bought the Xbox One because I wanted Ryse. I played the shit outta that game!

Tbh out of the gate, the X1 excusive lineup was way better than PS4 (owned both at that time).
Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, Ryse and you had Titanfall coming in spring.

It started off well. It had a better launch line up that PS4 did. However it went to shit pretty quick from then.

Yup.
Sunset Overdrive was a quirky cult classic in hindsight but not a reason to get a X1.
Gears 4 and Halo 5 were kinda meh and racing games don't move the needle as much.

I'd still say that the extra 100$/€ MS wanted, the TV/Kinect shit plus the 720p vs 1080p meme wars (even the most casual people understood that their FIFA game would look better on PS4) were more damaging than the "mid AF" exclusive lineup.
But the lack of killer apps clearly didn't help.

The Xbox One deserves to be mentioned in in the company of consoles such as the Atari Jaguar, Virtualboy and CD - I as one of the worst consoles to ever hit the video game market.

In fact, the Xbox One was something even worse than bad: It was bland. Unnecessary. If you purchased an XBone over a PS4 previous gen, you've purchased the wrong system.

It's a system with almost no noteworthy exclusive games and it ran every multiplatform game worse due to its crappy specs. I'm glad MS turned the ship around and the current gen has a lot of promise. Xbone was a dark page in console history and I'm glad we're moving on from it.

Well yes, how is this news? Xbox One was the first console where I really struggled to find any interesting game to motivate me to buy it. I've owned pretty much every console since the early 90's. Eventually I got an Xbox One X and tried what few exclusives it had, but they pretty were all mediocre. Then I played Red Dead Redemption in backwards compatibility mode which was awesome, then I sold it because it was just collecting dust.

Sad to see how they declined after the amazing Xbox 360.

What about series x/s? They are pretty close to becoming even worse. At least these first two years....
Difference is they have the studios now, making the games. XB1 didnt have the studios to make up for its shortcomings. They had like what 5 studios back then?, compared to 25 now, and soon to be 30+.
Sure Xbox users are having to wait for the said games to come this gen, but the difference is we DO know they are coming, and they will be coming in droves second half of the gen. XB1 never had that.
XB1 also didnt have Gamepass to cover its shotcomings most of its life too.

In the end only Ori was both original and quality. And it was quality.

Sea of Thieves was ok.

Master Chief Collection was fantastic, 4 years after release.

Forza Horizon 4 was not my cup of tea, I much prefer 3&5.

Halo 5 was quality, come at me bro, Gears 4 dreadful, Gears 5 great.

It’s bad overall for sure.
Hey now there were some decent games mixed into the bunch. Can't leave out Killer Instinct, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, and Quantum Break. As a launch game Ryse was decent. I totally agree that Ori was really good, but from an originality standpoint, there aren't many games that beat Sea of Thieves. Oh and Grounded is a bit underrated imo too. And I completely forgot about Cuphead.

Microsoft in all fairness has had only one bad generation. It's not like this is the end of the road.

We'll see, so far I haven't seen any game from them worth playing this generation. But sure, I'll definitely buy Starfield, the next Fallout and Elder Scrolls games but on PC. I have no reason or incentive to buy an Xbox console again.

And MS will be more than happy for you to do that. You're not actually pulling a fast one on them by doing that. MS make very little money on hardware sales, in fact they may even be making a small loss at the moment. They will be breaking even at best i'd guess.

Quantum Break alone says otherwise. Easily one of the best games all of last gen. Amazing story, great characters, some of the best gunplay there was (especially with the comboing of different powers), stunning visuals, excellent world building.

Need a sequel bad.
Facts along with Game of the Decade The Order 1887.

This is one of those weird generations where you could kind of argue it hasn't really begun. Sony has had a few exclusives so far, but things have been slow for both Microsoft and Sony to start this generation off. Of course that's my own opinion.

Nah, it's my feeling as well (own both XSX and PS5).
I guess Covid fucked a lot of big time projects, games were eiter delayed, cancelled or released in a poo poo state (2042, Infinite, Cyberpunk).
Cross-gen has been a crutch because the supply of next-gen consoles has been so short.
Now that XSX and PS5 can be bought without much of a hassle, I feel like this gen is just getting started.

Big picture wise: Gaming is clearly moving into a GaaS/Cross-platform/cross-device future, where blockbuster AAA exclusives are becoming irrelevant because the money is in FUT, Warzone and Fortnite.

All these posts about Starfield are weird when the game was announced in 2018 and MS bought them in March 2021 🤦

Same for Ghostwire or Deathloop. They were all coming with or without MS.

A ton of people shit in Ryse. But I’ll be honest, I had a great time when I played it.
Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive were also pretty fun to be honest, but all three of those games died because of the console it was on, not because of the quality of those games.

The DRM fiasco killed any steam it had before even launching. First party support was bare but I’m not going to act like it’s the only thing that made the Xbox one so hated but within the failure of it, sone good stuff happened like a new focus on backwards compatibility, and the very successful PS4 caused it to change few other dumb policies as well(like Netflix paywall)

LOL for building up this opinion like it's a radical position.

really though it just shows how strong the Xbox brand was in the Xbox 360 era. Xbox One managed to still sell several million consoles and remained alive for the full lifespan despite being inferior in every way to the ps4. It's really crazy how much brand building they destroyed that generation. Imagine if this generation started with the reputation of the 360 era things would be completely different, their userbase would be much larger and afford them to be extremely aggressive tactically making bethesda/id software games exclusive, then acquiring Activision/Blizzard and forcing exclusivity out of the gate because gamers would have already been predispositioned to it by then.

really shows that failures and successes get massively amplified during a console lifespan. console sells less, thus less developers develop for it or costs more money to moneyhat, thus less games, then fewer consoles get sold. While more consoles sold lead to more developers wanting to make games, even getting free exclusive games because poor ROI on going multiplatform, so more games, which lead to more consoles sold.

Gaming is moving into the subscription model fully. Less 1st party AAA and more AA to fit the model.

Of course! For me personally though, it's sad. They're making themselves redundant as a console manufacturer and I hate that kind of development.

Unfortunately, the world doesn't revolve around me though 😎 I'm painfully aware!

Halo and Gears of War (including Halo Spartan and Gears of Wars Tactics), Forza Motorsport, Forza Horizon, Quantum Break, Titanfall (it was an exclusive when it launched), Ori, Sunset Overdrive, Sea of Thieves, Rare Replay, Dead Rising 4, Grounded, Phantom Dust remaster, Recore, Stay of Decay, Crimson Dragon (Panzer Dragoon suscessor), D4,..

And still people trying their best to compare XBO with failed consoles such as Atari Jaguar, 3DO, PS Vita, etc... let me tell you something, in my opinion this library is better than N64 and WiiU's

I'm a huge fan of driving games, but found DriveClub and GT Sport very disappointing, so the Xbox One was an essential purchase for me. Had a great time in the Forza Horizon games in particular. Also enjoyed Rare Replay very much.

I felt so bad after the initial revealing of the console. I was a xbox 360 fan whole gen. Then I switched to PlayStation and abandoned the xbox ecosystem. I enjoyed the gears title and forza games on PC after that.

The console was shit but the games weren’t all that bad. I spent the good portion of the first year playing Titantfall which to this day is still one of the best mo games.

I restarted sunset overdrive three times but it never clicked for me but i know it has tons of fans. Recore was shit at launch but Definitive version is a flawed but a fantastic game. Ori games, while not exactly exclusive, are best in their genre. Dead Rising 3 is super fun

Sea of Thieves is one of my favorite games of all time.

I spent shitload of time on MCC, playing through campaigns numerous times.

Gears 4 was ok, 5 was very good and Hivebusters was fantastic.

Quantum Break was very good. Overall I prefer Control, but QB did a few things better.

All forza Horizon games are masterpieces

And I will defend Crackdown 3 until the day I die,

I mean, they could have done better, but it was dark ages for xbox with an uncertain future so all in all, it could have also been worse.

I’d say Saturn and Dreamcast had worse first party libraries.

The Dreamcast had an amazing first party library! It's stilly fav consoles till this day because of the first party games.

Xbox one did suck though. Completely slipped the console and I didn't miss nothing.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
I'm going to disagree, let me tell you about the Atari Jaguar, it came with cybermorph that game was so bad I took the jaguar back the very next day!

I really enjoyed the Xbox one exclusives, could there be more? Oh definitely, it's always nice to have more games.
But some of my most played games ever are Xbox one exclusives:

Killer Instinct reboot (hurry and give me another) 22 days, 23 hours exactly

Gears 4 54 days, 22 hours, 25 mins

Gears 5 68 days, 6 hours, 4 minutes

Halo 5 10 days 29 mins

Halo infinite 12 days, 21 hours, 21 mins

Sea of thieves 22 days, 3 hours, 51 mins (sadly I don't have the time for this game currently, as you need hours for a good session imo)

Other standout game with only a few days playtime each:
Forza Horizon 2-5
Ryse Son Of Rome
Ori games (oh wait these came to switch right?)
Titanfall 1 (2's maps were sadly pants)
Sunset Overdrive (hopefully Sony revives this series/but sadly I think insomniac might be a marvel factory now)

Amusingly it turns out I'm one of those guys that loves Halo, Gears, Forza Horizon, but in all honesty I love pretty much all game genres with the exception of sport :)

Obviously the above text is all just my opinion & I'm sure many will strongly disagree and maybe some here love the Atari jaguar and have fonder memories off the device.
This post reminds me of the fact the most people only like a minority of a platforms exclusives. Xbox one didn't have the single payer spectacles that Sony had last gen, but still the gears games, quantum break and sea of thieves was the same amount of games I played on the competition.
