Should Resident Evil 5 get a remake next?

Resident Evil 4 Remake is coming out soon and with that out of the way Capcom could be thinking what's the next big Remake they could do in the franchise.
There's still Code Veronica and Resident Evil (second remake) in the way for other options.

But since they're sticking with the main ones in order, 2, 3, 4...

Should Resident Evil 5 get a remake? If so, what should and should not be changed?

Let's remember a little bit of RE5:
  • It was the big staple for co-op Resident Evil
  • It brought the real time inventory management
  • Story was all over the place and finally turned RE into anime RE
  • Playing Single Player was a pain in the ass with the poor companion AI
  • There was a lot of controversy calling the game racist because you shoot back people
  • It's the best selling RE game

Yes absolutely, for us oldies these Remakes have been brilliant excuses to replay some gaming greats, and for younger gamers a chance to discover them for the first time.

I'm really confident that RE5 will be remade next, as OP mentions it's a huge seller and it's also next in line chronologically. It will be a Day One purchase for me.

Resident Evil can be many things to different people and that's part of the series strength - it's a big cauldron of crazy ingredients. Horror and scares of course, but also goofiness, unintentionally hilarious dialogue, ridiculous action, even some coy sexiness. Some people want Resident Evil to be more serious or to be only one thing, but it's the melting pot that makes it so special.

Nah, I'd prefer RE1 honestly be the next one. Cause at least at that point 1-3 will have been remade with the over the shoulder gameplay + new engine. And 4, lol.

For those saying it's already a good looker and doesn't need improvement...

Resident Evil 5 came out in 2009, and so if the Remake hit in 2025 (which it feasibly could as Capcom have proven way more efficient than most publishers at putting out product) that would be 16 years of graphical evolution. Make it next gen only and you'd have the best looking Resident Evil ever.

RE5 looks very good still, I don't even think RE4 needed one. I dont like or care about remakes tough since I prefer to the play the original the way they were meant to be.

I'm really curious where CAPCOM will stop with the remakes. They've remade 1-4 now, but those four are much more highly-regarded than 5 and 6. Seven and 8 are still new, so no need for remakes yet.

Five could benefit from updating the play to move-and-shoot, but other than that, I don't see much of a reason or demand to update it.

Yes, playing as a white soldier shooting black zombies in Africa will definitely go over well in 2023. Do it for the luls capcom.

It's actually a very fun game to play in coop, so is 6, so I would definitely buy it if they keep the coop modes

And what? LOL, you're the one saying the game crippled RE when actually it was the best selling RE. Facts don't correlate with what you're saying
Statistical Correlation is a fallacy you know. Didn't they teach you that in school? High sales numbers does not magically make a game immune to criticism or long term damage done to the franchise as a whole. Capcom knew this which is why they stopped making this game in the first place after RE6. Why do you think the last several games in the series completely ditched co-op in the campaign the first place? It's because the introduction of co-op completely crippled the very thing that gave RE it's identity in the first place. By turning it into a linear corridor shooter, they functionally made it into a completely different IP piggy backing off the RE name.

No way they touch this one in 2023 without changing the entire location of the game or making it still in Africa, but you’re killing white Africans descended from colonists. And the story is metaphorically about colonialism and how white people are a virus.

For the record, I thought the game was pretty fun, though I couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculously buff Chris was.

The game deserves a remake just so we can see him punch a boulder at 4k60 with high qualiy textures.

Or maybe because it was the first proper RE co-op experience. Or people liked it...

Nobody liked it for the co=op, actually it was shit on by everyone because you had to heal and supply Shiva with ammo while you are also fighting off enemies. Tho its not as bad as RE6, now thats a trash game lol. I dont care how many copies it sold, its everything a resident evil game isnt.

Only if they rewrite the story a little, ditch Sheva and bring Jill back in like she was supposed to be. Have Rebecca be Weskers little sexdoll-puppet instead, since he had that photo of her in his desk.

Sheva > Jill.

To OP: Absolutely yes. RE5 is a game me and my friend constantly go back to on a yearly basis, it's so much fun.

Capcom would have to change a lot more than graphics.
But it could be a great opportunity to make proper good games out of RE5 and RE6.

Rebecca was meant to return in a Switch game, come to think of it. It was said that it would be set in her university, which sounds too similar to her ordeal in the animated tie in piece, called Vendetta.

I'd rather they can it with these remakes, since too much keeps being taken out.

RE5 is so weird. Its probably my most played RE ever because of the coop and mercs. But I don't even like it much. The co op was simply fun and esp. in Mercs and the 2 DLC episodes. The base game I didn't touch that much. But I did find the game to be better over time. Accept its no RE4 and doesn't try to be.

But if a remake would work... well, its level design and everything is very standard fare. It was tailored for co-op and short sessions. But for Mercs I would say yes. Though RE4 remake could also deliver that now (OG RE4 mercs was vastly inferior to 5).

Yes but the series did fell off a cliff after 5. RE6 continued the formula and was panned. Then all we got was a B-game like Revelations 2 which was fun but very low budget. RE was kind of saved by the HD remasters of the GC games. REVII took a direction for the better, and RE2R went back to the roots. I don't think RE would be in such a healthy state if Capcom would continue the RE5 formula.

RE1 is my pick too. Yes there is a Remake of it, but its 20 years old also. And its the same game with tank controls and static camera.

RE1 remade like RE2 I would applaud.

ONLY and ONLY IF they bring back things like Sunstroke and Heat Exhaustion as mechanics, and the need to actually run, hide and survive like they originally intended. Otherwise 5 is the least in need of a remake.
Code Veronica would benefit from a remake, places like antarctica and the frigid wastes, they could do a lot with the setting. The Island and prison could be expanded and they could finally tone down some of the stupider aspects like it seems there doing with Salazar in the 4 remake.
But 6 would benefit from a remake far more than any of them, though I imagine it would be a monumental task to make each of the campaigns cohesive and actually horror.

There's so much room for improvement here that it's not even a room but a fucking warehouse of improements.

I think if they remake 5 they should reimagine it as a different game. Like make an actual sequel to RE4 remake and scrap the existing RE5 story.

Also, yes a remake of 1 and Code Veronica I see coming first.

Nah. RE4 didn’t need a remake either. RE5 is already a good looking game and the Remastered version is completely fine. It’s also easily one of the best co-op games of all time. Plus there’s at least a 50/50 chance they’d make Sheva less attractive, and they’d probably change a lot of stuff about the setting and what not.
RE6 could maybe be remade into an actually good game, but that probably wouldn’t even be worth the time.

I’d rather they just make another new game. I’m getting tired of the remakes.

Yes, I think it would be a dope idea. Just scrap RE5 and RE6 storylines or at least reimagine them to get rid of the stuff that sucked and only use the stuff that worked. It's another chance to make those games right.

People who like RE5 give it way too much credit anyway. It's a really bad game and so is RE6.
