Impossible to say if the game is "GOTY material" or not at this point. We haven't played the game yet. I think that's a fundamental requirement for any such statement like GOTY.
One can make educated guesses. No different than predicting who will win a football game (between two evenly matched teams) or whether or not a movie will be good based on trailers, directors, writers, etc...

My prediction is that this will not be in the majority of conversations for GOTY.

That's fine, but you are saying anyone who makes a prediction that doesn't agree with yours is a "massive fanboy". Doesn't make any sense.

I mean... it's the same as people who watched literally any gameplay of Starfield and thought it would be a gamechanger. It looked and sounded like Fallout in Space, yet people were trying to call it a Game of the Year. That was clearly a case of fanboys hoping that Xbox could pull out a massive win. This is the same as that, with Sony (especially because Sony hasn't had that strong of a year).

In other words, to look at footage of the gameplay, other Game of the Year contenders, and how Game of the Year awards are usually handled... the educatedguess is that it will not be a contender. I'd love to see a compelling argument for why it seems otherwise.

Being overly hyped for a game or having high expectations for that game does not equate to being a "massive fanboy". The "massive fanboy" is the guy who ignores the results and pretends the game is still going to win GOTY even when the reception says otherwise. Someone predicting Spider-man 2 is "GOTY material" is making a prediction based on the exact same information you have. That doesn't make them a fanboy. It simply means the two of you disagree. Who is ultimately right remains to be seen.

That would've been a valid opinion if in another you had not been outed as a massive Xbox fanboy. There's even a rumor that you are the mother of senjutsu and the famous robert that had no alt but is sueing for the removal of his alt.
So what more do we need.

In these weird times I think I need to add /s just incase some took it literaly.

Even the last Spider-Man game was a GOTY contender. So if it's more of the same but better in every aspect, why wouldn't Spider-Man 2 also be a GOTY contender?

The game can absolutely be better. But if you watch gameplay, it really doesn't look like it's doing anything significantly different from its predecessors. Historically, games that do "more of the same," tend to be critically received either as well as their predecessors or worse (because the industry seems to place a premium on innovation). Nintendo games tend to be an exception, but not always.

Personally, I believe that if a game is just as good as its predecessors, with minor improvements, it should receive the same score or better. But that's generally not how the industry seems to work.

I'm just going by some of the previews. Seems like they made improvements to it.

Miles Morales was a Game of the Year contender? Or are you referring to the 87 metacritic PS4 original?

In that case, Starfield would also be a Game of the Year contender, because Skyrim and Fallout 3 were actual Game of the Year winners.

Starfield was heavily dinged for being more of the same; there's no real reason this shouldn't be as well, based on preview footage, on which is what people are basing their Game of the Year predictions.

Damn!

Anyone still wanna doubt this team and have your coffin on that hill? Go for it! The rest of us will be treated to this beast in just over a month!

My man, Insomniac developed Spider-Man 2 in five years, and in the middle of the path they still released Miles Morales, SM Remastered and R&C Rift Apart.

If Insomniac spent, I don't know, 8/9 years developing a single game like Rockstar does, I'm sure they have full capacity to create a world so detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2. But thank God they don't want that.
That doesn't justify anything though, my point had nothing to do with production value, it's more about taking risks and designing gameplay with depth, which is exactly why I bring up Arkham Knight as well.

Spider-Man 1 was a GOTY contender. Its sequel is Spider-Man 2.

Starfield is not dinged for being more of the same. Starfield is dinged because it is a regression of the Bethesda formula in nearly every aspect -- especially because of gimped exploration, a disjointed world, and the lack of immersion -- which is why it's ranking lower than most Bethesda games, both in terms of critics' reviews (83 vs. Skyrim's 96), and Steam user reviews (72% vs. Skyrim's 94%).

I don't think anyone is doubting the team. I know I'm personally still looking forward to playing it, eventually, and would be very surprised if I didn't enjoy it.

I just don't see how anyone looks at it and legitimately thinks it's a true game of the year contender.

This post is choking itself with irony.

Tell us — why it "legitimately isn't a trueGOTY contender".

I already have; look at my previous posts.

That tells me absolutely nothing about Spider-Man. The previous post didn't either, except (it's more of the same). Plenty of GOTY contenders (and winners) were more of the same. I see nothing stopping Spider-Man 2 from being in the conversation.

why do you keep bringing up Starfield in a preview thread for Spider-Man 2? 🤨
