I just picked up a sidequest that involved running back to an area I was at earlier in the story to pick up a new gadget.

That was it...Not even AR missions after that and it's listed as 100% in my side quest log and as we all know there aint a ton of those. Lazy design there.

I think everyone is having the audio stuttering at the Nvidia logo. Kinda leaves a not so good impression when that's one of the first things you see upon launching the game.

Anyway, I finally got up the nerve to install this and surprisingly it all went well. Securom and G4WL didn't cause any issues; created my offline account for the latter and got on with it.

It runs fairly well under DX9 (60 fps, 1080p, all maxed, no PhysX w/ dual GTX-260's on an i5-750 @ 3.8Ghz) but there's still some slight hitching. It's not from lack of GPU resources, it seems like good 'ol UE3 load stuttering. For example, if you swing the camera quickly in a new area, or if you're flying and all of a sudden the engine needs to load additional assets. Seems to occur sometimes when opening doors also. GPU usage doesn't increase any but FPS may drop to 52-55 for a split second. I know that Unreal engine titles often do this but it's almost as if they didn't tweak the engine for this game to take advantage of the PC's additional resources and RAM availability. I know Boobphysics made mention a few posts back about the streaming, so hopefully he's on to something there.

This is true, but I didn't want to say anything til other people confirmed it.

While flying around the city, I'll drop from 60 FPS down to 50-55 FPS while panning the camera during gliding, etc.

But when I force the game to fully load into RAM (before it crashes while crossing the city due to the RAM usage going over 2 GB), all of those hitches and FPS loss are gone while gliding/fast-panning; the game stays consistent at 60 FPS.

Oh that probably explains why I'm stuttering like crazy then and why it doesn't happen nearly as much indoors. It's so bad I'm almost ready to call it Batman Stutter City. I hope they can patch that soon.

Well glad I'm not the only one experiencing stuttering in those exact situations, was wondering why in the world my fps would drop when gliding around the city.

i'm so terrible at these flying AR missions. there were so easy at the beginning!

Only one of the AR missions are difficult, but once you figure out the secret, none of the AR missions are too bad. I got a 100% on those missions, now I have to wait for a story beat to occur, so I can get a new shiny device.

How'd you tweak that? I'm curious to see if it's smooth for me before crashing, too. Every single UE3 game has this problem for me, from Bulletstorm to Alice 2.

How are you doing that? Your mentioning of 2gb cap is x86 related? x64 doesent have 2gb limit per app.

They won't be able to do too much with a patch, that's how UE3 is unfortunately.

How come it's not affecting everyone though? I mean I've seen people here posting specs lower than mine saying stuff like "constant 60 fps" on both amd and nvidia cards (I have nvidia). I get 60 fps too when it's not stuttering while I'm flying around the city but these people aren't saying anything about a stutter.

edit: if it's a RAM issue I should throw out there that I have 6gb, more than enough for any game out now.

Yes, but the game exe is 32-bit, and even though it's large address aware, as soon as it hits 2 GB of system RAM usage it encounters errors and fucks itself.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO TEST AND WANT TO REPORT YOUR RESULTS, HERE ARE MY SETTINGS TO KEEP THINGS CONSISTENT
1080p, 32x CSAA, Max everything on DX9, 16x AF forced through drivers and ini's, Shadowmapresolution @ 4096, PhysX HIGH, Vsync + Triple buffering ON

Glide through the city while rapidly panning the camera. You will see hitches and drops below 60 FPS if everything is how it should be NORMALLY, yet with backgroundstreaming disabled you won't see the hitches.

Ok, here's how to force the game to load into RAM entirely (note, load times will increase):

In Bmengine.ini, change the following (ignore my ; comments, they are there to show you what default was)

Code:
bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=False ;original is True
TimeBetweenPurgingPendingKillObjects=15 ;original is 60
SizeOfPermanentObjectPool=20600000 ;original is 11600000

Enjoy. Try crossing the city, it will crash about halfway through. Also open up task manager and check out the RAM usage. You will see once it gets close to 209,7xxxxx kb of RAM usage that the application will encounter an error.

Finally installed my copy. Ran benchmark with all settings at the highest except AA is off, 1920x1200. Min 2, Max 100, Avg 45. So much stuttering. :/

i7 2600k OC'ed to 4.4, 570 GTX OC'ed to 926.

Skimming through the thread, sounds like the usual Unreal engine issues? I recall having to tweak ini files for Alpha Protocol to get rid of the stuttering by disabling level streaming.

DX11 issues. Turn off DX11. Leave everything else (including PhysX) on max.

And yes, just like Alpha Protocol and Bulletstorm, turning off level streaming helps so much. I just need to figure out if I can get the game to use more than 2 GB of RAM without fucking itself in the ass with a batarang.

will it possible for modders to make custom costumes in this engine or is it pretty much impossible?

also, catwoman's animations are amazing.

these things are completely unrelated, btw.

I'm sure they will. People made costumes for AA. They were pretty janky though.

So today I open steam and it's downloading another 1.6gb, I'm guessing that's why it was crashing last night.

More than likely. I had the same issues when I downloaded the game, it would always crash at the title screen when I pushed start. When I verified the cache I had like 1.8gb to download even though I had just downloaded the damn game.

After that it crashed another 1-2 times at the title screen but then it just started working.

I'm playing on

AMD 1055 @ 3.5Ghz
580 GTX @ 850Mhz
8 GB DDR3

I'm getting framedrops when I'm gliding around outside. What config should I be using with this set up?

I've got PhysX set to Normal and still get drops around 30 outdoors.

That's probably the same problem a lot of us are getting, the UE3 loading problem.

It finally unlocked and it runs pretty great so far (DX 9).

But the game has a German dub and it forces me to play with the German voices. I want to play the game in English but there isn't an option anywhere.
How do I change the language? Normally my steam games download the English version automatically.

Edit: I found something; "Users\YOURNAME\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City\BmGame\Config" I had to change the Language setting in the "UserEngine.ini" file to ENG

And I take back what I said about it running great, it stutters quite frequently. I play with a GTX460 1GB, 8GB DDR3, AMD Athlon II 3.2Ghz

Edit2: What is the best option for AA regarding performance? MSAA 2x/4x or FSAA (medium) or Nvidia 8x CSAA? I have no idea :p And I guess I have no chance to play with PhysX on normal?

So I disabled level streaming in the engine.ini file which completely smoothed out the stuttering issues however load times are like 10+ minutes like that...

Bleeeh.

Custom costumes only worked in the demo of Asylum. Don't know if they meant to patch it out in the full game 'cause they're dicks or what.

Pretty shitty about the Unreal Engine only using 2gigs, I never knew that before. Can't believe they haven't updated the engine to fix that shit. Maybe that's why the next Xbox is rumored to only have 2 gigs of ram?

That was kind of disappointing. The whole game is really unfocused, hitches and stutters all the time... not the follow-up I was hoping for really. Also whoever it was at Rocksteady that decided to have thugs yell not-so-subtle rape threats at Catwoman ("I'm gonna make you beg me to stop!" for example) needs some serious help.

Game crashes everytime I try to enter the main menu. What gives?

Edit: Now I crash right after Hugo Strange appears, in the intro.

The music cuts out, and a few seconds later, "Batman has stopped responding"

I just tried different settings with my i5 and 5770 and I found the best performance/graphic ratio for me was DX9 everything max with 4x MSAA.
FSAA - Medium had some better framerate but looked much worse, IMO.

So wit DX9, 4x MSAA, Vsync on and everything max I get an average framerate of 45 with max at 60 and min at 12.
That is acceptable. DX11 not working properly, isn't! Repair that now, Rocksteady!

EDIT: Ah, and before I forget... Thanks! I was looking for that English language option everywhere. You saved me!

How well is this game going to run on a GTX 260? I'm not hearing good things, I'm thinking about running to my 24 hour Walmart tonight ti pick up the console version for $29.99

I keep crashing with an out of video memory issue.

Here are my specs:

I5 2500K
4gb ram
Gtx 560 TI

Now I am running Win 7 Professional 32 bit
Would I benefit by going to 64bit?

Why are you running 32bit? You are losing a gig worth of ram between the vram and system ram. Not sure if thats what is causing your problem here, but you should switch to 64bit. Don't they both come on the same disk? If not, I know for sure a 32bit key will absolutely work with a 64bit copy of windows, so you should track down a copy.

EDIT: This was directed at meljeff. My tablet fucking hates GAF.

I don't have a disc I got it through a student promotion. At the time I was scared to go 64bit though I know that was silly now and I'm willing to upgrade. Based on what you are saying I'd technically gain 2GB Ram

1GB = System Ram
1GB = Video ram

That's Definately worth it and could help I'll consider doing it

How do you run it in 64bit? When I mouse over it in the taskbar it says 32bit :/
